Will Survival Horror Mount A Comeback With The Evil Within?

<encoded>I’ll never, ever forget the first time I played Resident Evil on PlayStation. I was in the seventh grade, and the game had just launched on PlayStation. A friend of mine begged his mother to take us to the local video store to grab it, at which point we rented it, put the disc in our console, and proceeded to a play a game that, up to that point, was wholly unique, if not unprecedented. I was all about JRPGs and side-scrollers at this point in my life, and I had never seen or played anything like Resident Evil, mostly because nothing quite like Resident Evil even existed then.

Sure, in hindsight, Resident Evil suffered from its share of problems – like that horrific voice acting, for instance – but it also created a tangible atmosphere of fear and foreboding. Quiet moments of seemingly innocuous exploration suddenly exploded into terror as a gruesome canine smashed through a window. Bullets needed to be accounted for, because there just wasn’t that many of them. Hell, Ink Ribbons – which I consider to be, to this day, an awesome design concept – forced us to even think about how often we’d save our game, and when. The team behind Resident Evil tried to pay attention to everything that really mattered when it came to horror, and they largely succeeded.

<encoded>The Bandai Namco Dragon Ball Z fighting games have always excelled with their spectacular multiplayer — huge fights, devastating abilities, tons of characters, and other things you’d expect from a great episode of the anime translated brilliantly into the gorgeous games. Dragon Ball Xenoverse’s multiplayer is fine — if a bit too familiar by now — but its single-player story is going to make fans lose their minds.

Xenoverse’s campaign — which received the blessing of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama — introduces two new villains, Towa and Mira, who are changing the history of the Dragon Ball universe. They manipulate major events from the manga and series in dramatic ways. The scene in which Goku sacrificing himself to kill Raditz, for instance, sees Goku dying, but Raditz dodging Piccolo’s lethal Beam Cannon.

<encoded>The Japanese gaming scene is unlike any other in the world, and nowhere is this more apparent than when game makers converge to show their works at the Tokyo Game Show. You will see colors in games at TGS that you might have never seen in your own game collection. Only a fraction of Japan's games actually make it to the rest of the world, and even though it's the rare gamer who gets hyped for what they might never get to play, there are bound to be games you'd be intrigued by if only you knew about them.

IGN has brought you playthroughs and videos of the top titles on the TGS 2014 floor, but there's just no way to showcase every game at the show. For a deeper dive through the wide variety of titles at TGS, we've collected up this massive collection of images from this year's games. Which of these Japanese games are you instantly pre-ordering? And which ones are you writing up petitions for right now in hopes of seeing an international release?

While there were, of course, utterances of “this game is fun” and “that's an awesome weapon” and the rare mention of strategy, sword noobs were a common thread. As fun as it is to face waves of dinosaurs and take down big stompy robotic titans, and as surprisingly as the simplistic low-detail design works in Minimum’s favor, the imbalanced melee gameplay makes creates more than minimal frustration..

Provided you can find a full five-on-five match without too many sword-wielding psychos, all three of Minimum’s modes are a blast. There’s a standard team deathmatch with some good-sized maps, a horde mode that pits you against unique creatures and foes in samurai and ninja costumes, and Titan Mode, which mixes elements of MOBAs, Minecraft, and Titanfall into Minimum's greatest selling point.

As a result, he’s taken a job at a mobile developer/publisher, and has struck a deal to eventually continue his project.

“It’s kind of an unusual agreement,” he told IGN. “I have a special carve-out that allows me to work with another publishing partner or find other routes to fund my dream game.”

<encoded>United Front Games has confirmed that Triad Wars will be officially unveiled next Monday.

This is according to the studio's blog, which also announces the team will be doing a Reddit AMA on Tuesday, September 23 at 12pm PST.

Initially announced back in October 2013, little was known about Triad Wars other than it was an action game set in the same universe as 2012's Sleeping Dogs. The aforementioned blog post claims that Triad Wars is a PC online game, although no other details were revealed.

Originally titled True Crime: Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs was later renamed and released as a standalone open-world game. IGN's review of Sleeping Dogs called it "...worthy of joining the top class of open-world sandbox games revolutionized by the likes of Grand Theft Auto IV..." A definitive edition of the game is due out for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on October 14.

      <encoded>
Last year’s Disney Infinity brought toys to life without ever forgetting the fun of playing with toys. In that version, it’s not unusual to find Mr. Incredible riding the Muppet mobile around Cinderella’s castle firing a toilet-paper gun. The core playsets, meanwhile, are great in a different way - they expose kids to a variety of gameplay experiences, from hack-and-slash combat to naval warfare, skateboarding, and stealth.

For Disney Infinity 2.0, I expected a major advancement in gameplay on top of the addition of Marvel’s mightiest heroes to the party. The name certainly implies it. But while it brings some smart improvements and Toy Box mode continues to evolve and impress, elsewhere this sorta-sequel feels more like a downgrade.

Destiny, the Millennium Falcon, Solid Snake and Final Fantasy's Jurassic car park... This week's podcast has it all!

<encoded>You wait for ages and three come along at once. Yes, we've waited for what seems like an eternity and now Destiny is here, Krupa, Luke and Alex all decided to play at Hunters. Duh. Thankfully, the three amigos are better at chatting about the latest games and movie news than they are at making original decisions, so this week's podcast is a corker.

Naturally, Destiny is a big part of this podcast, what with it being the only new game for what seems like an eternity, but the team also talk about the friendly feud between Zack Snyder and JJ Abrams, plus what are the hottest things to come from the Tokyo Games Show.

So kick-start your weekend in style by opening your ears or your eyes (or both!) and enjoying this week's podcast. And yes, we are aware Luke's mic wasn't working properly but some things are meant to be, right?

<encoded>Respawn has released information about the Sand Trap map set to be released as part of the upcoming IMC Rising DLC.

The map, which we've got a solitary screenshot of below, is designed "to use old ideas in new ways" with a central bunker designed to allow Titans to stomp around above ground while Pilots hide below. Deep trenches across the map aim to provide a relatively safe means for Pilots to quickly travel from one end of the space the the other.

These trenches also mean the main central space of the map can be left as a Titan's playground, with little cover. In theory, Respawn believes this adds a unique feel to game modes thanks to long site lines, open spaces and clearly designed choke points when it comes to Capture the Flag.

<encoded>Hearthstone developer Blizzard has clarified how players can better assess their decks and performance.

Blizzard - which recently confirmed that there were now over 20 million registered Hearthstone players - noted that some players had commented that they were "not performing well".

The Ranked Play mode, detailed on battle.net, not only provides an opportunity to test your deck-building skills against real opponents, but also offers the chance to snag some "awesome new cards" if you achieve Rank 20 or higher in any season - or even a Legendary card, if you're really good.

Nvidia GTX 980 Video Card: Initial Impressions & Benchmarks

Forget chasing down existing stock of GTX 780 Ti cards in hope of a deal— embrace the future.

<encoded>First, a little transparency: having started at IGN just last week, my test lab is still in a fledgling state. Testing acoustics and power consumption extends beyond the equipment I have at the moment, so this is more of a quick look at how the GTX 980 does for gaming. (Though if you're wondering, the 980 is a pretty quiet card. The 290X is definitely louder.)

Second, I readily acknowledge that the GTX 980 is absolutely a higher-end card (it’s now the top single-GPU card in NVIDIA’s lineup)—and that you don’t have to have a higher-end card to get enjoyable PC gaming.

But higher-end tech is fun to play with. If you can afford it, PC gaming can spark that same kind of smile that folks who’ve driven a Tesla get. It’s that little grin that you just can’t wipe off your face because you’re just so pleased by the experience.
