D3 Triple Treat[ Comment ] 6:09 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Doom 3There's been some new additions to the DOOM flavoured projects available at DOOM 3 Files, and some look pretty tasty! Give the following a peek and a poke at your leisure:
DooM Beta Mod v1.0: This mod is based on the beta version of Doom 3 PC and Xbox. I always wanted to make something similar to those 2003 trailers from Xbox & PC version.
Super Allies v1.0: This mod combines existing "AI Helper" mods to create a new experience in DOOM 3 and D3: RoE.
BFG_Guns v1.0: Ever get tired of the lack of punch in the pistol? Want to change that? Well then this mod is for you!
Now the pistol (and every other gun) now fires BFG shots. Mayhem and destruction await!
Hell and Back #632[ Comment ] 5:58 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsAfter going to see my accountant, I stopped by my mother's place to hook my nephew's Xbox 360 up for an online connection, and that made for one happy little camper I can tell you. Now we need to get games we can play each other online, and the first one I'm thinking about is DOOM II. It was recently released in the Arcade section of Xbox LIVE, and I liked the way the demo handled, so I think I'll be scooping it. If you think I'm going against my stand of not playing FPS games on a console, remember that DOOM and DOOM II had limited movement (no up or down head movement) and I think they work on a console in ways Quake never could. Not that classic DOOM is better than Quake, they're just different enough to make it so one is OK on consoles

Doom 3 Evolution is a single-player game-play conversion mod. It is meant to be played with original Doom 3 storyline/levels. The main features of this mod are it's original Class and Skill system, as well as Weapon and Augment upgrade system. In a couple of words- this mod gives Doom 3 the depth it deserves, by introducing various new tools and skills, and a great variety of possible characters.
Hell and Back #631[ Comment ] 5:58 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsIt's the Friday before a long weekend here in Canuckia, and this is the weekend of beer around here because it's known as the "May 2-4 weekend" and since we call a case of 24 beers a 2-4, the Victoria Day holiday has taken a clearly beverage centered role in our year. Now don't you feel smarter knowing all that? Now I just have to make sure I have enough "holiday" on hand!

Revility Interview[ Comment ] 8:11 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Doom 3In our latest community interview, our newest trooper, Xenoix takes a crack at one of the minds behind some of the funkiest mods to hit the scene, Revility: of the Atomic Armadillo gang! Get the scoop on what drives this team and why they crave a new perspective on traditional FPS games. Get down and get funky with the Revility Interview!
Xenoix:After your team's first mod for Quake 4, HardQore, you've since moved on to two mods that are currently in development for Doom 3. What made you decide to use Doom 3 over another game as a base for your newest projects?
Revility: The mod idea, your modding knowledge & skills is what should decide what game it should go for. The game chosen is one you really enjoy also because your going to be spending more time with it in some cases than the developers. We choose to do HardQore 2 for Doom 3 instead of Quake 4 because it was more flexible, easier to work with. It helped us make sure we could do a sequel that would be better & different than the first time. Ruiner was done for Doom 3 because we were very familiar with modding for it by that time. D3 also had a huge amount of assets in the game that would work very well for the mod. (More)

The topic this time is co-op play, and if you've been around here for more than a little while, you know I'm a huge fan of co-op play. Hell and Back #629[ Comment ] 6:03 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsI spent a good chunk of yesterday on my Xbox 360 because I have two reviews to do for it. One is an indie game, and the other is a new set of headphones. I need somebody to chat with online to test the mic that came with the headphones, so if anybody has an Xbox 360 and does the online thing, give me a buzz and you can help me test this thing out. You'll get your name in the review if that's anything you're interested in.

New Romero Interview[ 2 Comments ] 6:36 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsIn a new interview at Gamesauce, legendary game designer John Romero takes questions from fellow designer Brenda Brathwaite, and this time its no fluff-piece. John takes the hard questions about some of the decisions hes made (Like with Daikatanas ad campaign) and much more.
Brenda Brathwaite:Let's start with your design philosophy. When you make a game, what are you trying to accomplish?
John Romero: Well, it begins and ends with the playeralways has. While I am making the game, thats the role I take. I might be in coding mode or level design mode or whatever, but the only reason that Im in that mode is because, just prior to that, I was thinking about what the player would like, what I would like. My process is highly iterative. I change, play, change, play, until it feels just right. Ultimately, Im making the game for every player who likes the type of games that I like to play. So, in a sense, I am my games audienceor the ambassador for them, anyway. That way, I never have to guess what the player might like, because its always what I would like. (More)

Hell and Back #627[ Comment ] 7:10 PST | Pappy-R | Print NewsI totally forgot what today is, and I think I may have blocked it from my memory on purpose. I have to go out of town for tests I have only once or twice a year. Its horrible stuff and one of the tests feels like youre being suffocated for five minutes, which is then followed by one of the worst headaches Ive ever had, and thats saying something. So you all go ahead and have some fun and frags today, Ill be waiting for my head to split open like that chick in DOOM 3 that releases a Lost Soul. Frag a Hell Knight for me gang!

Introducing the Arx End Of Sun Project[ Comment ] 6:49 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Doom 3Another new DOOM 3 project in the works has come to light and this one is set to be a prequel to the well know RPG game, Arx Fatalis. In the first post on their still new smelling slot on the Mod DB you'll get a glimpse of their goals, and what they've already got in the oven. This one will have heavy RPG elements, and you can scope out some details on the Inventory System, Magic System and Journal right now. A very kool point here is that Arkane Studios, the makers of the original game are behind this mod and supporting it with their own Forum on the Arkane Studios Forum. That's some kool kookies right there!
Thievious Update 3[ Comment ] 6:41 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Doom 3The Thievious project for DOOM 3 has another progress update, and as I their style, another movie showing of what theyve been working on in this medieval styled magic and mayhem mod. Check out the Thievious slot on Mod DB for a list of progress items and check out the video below that shows off the new Magical Powers animations in the works.
Hell and Back #626[ 2 Comments ] 6:37 PST | Pappy-R | Print News | Category: Community NewsIts been another week without posts, and I do feel bad gang. Sure the DOOM scene is slow right now, but if I wasn't mostly messed-up, I could have posted for you. The good news is that things are finally, really getting back to normal for me and doing this site is one of the things I've missed the most. The combination of the DOOM games and this community make for an awesome combination that I truly enjoy. I guess that explains why I do this site for free. So stick around gang, by Monday all will be right with the world, or at least our little corner of the solar system around Mars.
So who's expecting some DOOM 4 goodness to come out of either E3 or QuakeCon this summer?
