Dear Diary: TF2 Team, A Week In The Life
If you're looking for some Friday chuckles then head over to the Team Fortress Blog to read A Week in the Life of the TF2 Team. Here's a snip to get you started. I nearly peed myself. Now I have a sudden urge to go out and buy a hat.

My first day at Valve working with the Team Fortress 2 team. Pretty excited! TF2 is my all-time favorite game, and I just know I'm due for big things here.

Robin Walker showed me around the office and explained that Valve has a "flat management" style, meaning that nobody's in charge of anybody.

"And I'm the MOST not in charge of everybody," he said, cocking a thumb at himself. "I fired everybody at the company once. I could fire you and not even break a sweat."

I laughed at this, then looked around and saw everybody else not laughing. I trailed off.

"He really did fire everybody," Corey Peters said.

"Then he bought a horse," Dario Casali added.

Robin laughed warmly at these memories as he fed sugar cubes to his horse. "This is your desk," he added. He didn't point anywhere or look at anything besides the horse.

Mortal Online Goes Live In June
The Mortal Online newsletter just came out, featuring a couple of nuggets of news. This is the last week of open beta for the MMO, and the official launch date has been set for June 9th. A new engine build has apparently taken care of a desync issue. With assistance from Epic Games China / Titan Studios, they feel that the latest build of the game is much more stable. Titan Studious will continue to work on their network solution while supporting the development of Mortal Online. The coming patches will include server fixes for better performance, bug fixes and progressively enabling game features for the testers. Although beta is going from open to closed effective immediately, those who pre-purchased Mortal Online will still be able to login during the closed beta period.

Champions Online: Ask Cryptic General Q&A;
Cryptic has slapped up its latest issue of Ask Cryptic for Champions Online. Most of the Q&A; is about what's coming up. Here's a little taste on Supergroup Bases (which would be cool, IMO... but ain't happening).

Maekada: The one thing I want in this game soon, above all else, is Supergroup bases. I know it has been stated that they do not intend to make them any time soon, and I would like to know why this is, when it is something that players want dearly.

A: poz: I'm sorry to say that we don't have the time or resources to get Supergroup bases in properly right now. We're focusing on the Adventure Packs, quality of life features, and bugs for the time being.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - Advanced Class System & Creating Worlds
- 8 Comments
BioWare is busy with the Star Wars: The Old Republic updates today. First up, a reveal of a new area of the SW:ToR website called Game Systems. To kick off the first update to the section an Advanced Class System has been announced, granting players unique skills and abilities designed to add flexibility to character customization. Basically, it looks like your standard MMO alternate advancement tree system.

For example, all Smugglers are lucky, opportunistic swindlers. But, do you want to be the kind of Smuggler that sneaks into the middle of a firefight and quickly blasts away at an opponent from point-blank range? Or do you want to be the kind that keeps to the outskirts of the battle, strategically picking your targets from a distance?

The second item is a lengthy article from Daniel Erickson, Principal Lead Writer, called Creating Worlds. Here's a little sample of what goes into the job of creating worlds.

"They're a meditative people. They're communal, not individualistic, and they’d create symbolic art--pattern-based and preferably monochromatic to contrast with their amazingly colorful skin."

“For skin colors and patterns, poison dart frogs as a starting point. Something that jumps against the background of the planet. These people don’t blend or quite belong on their world.”

"The Gormak are running down a tech path unseen in the galaxy. It's important that we see the ship that they're creating and it jumps out as foreign, wrong for Star Wars™. Anything we see that is Gormak should be slick, impressive and create a sense of wrongness in Players."

"The Voss must at all times feel isolated. Voss-Ka is high above the rest of the planet but it's an island in a sea of Gormak. Every other outpost is overrun or threatened. The Republic and Empire see the Voss as standing on the roof of their last building in a losing war but the Voss never reach out for help. They are not looking to be rescued."

F1 2010 Dev Diary Vid
Weather's the focus of the third F1 2010 dev diary vid:

Weather can have a dramatic affect on the outcome of a FORMULA ONE race, affecting both the level of control of the cars and race strategy. To deliver the most authentic FORMULA ONE experience possible, these effects are fully simulated in F1 2010, the official game of the 2010 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

In the video, the wide ranging effects of weather and their impact in the game are revealed. FORMULA ONE test driver Anthony Davidson explains that although you have some information about the weather at your disposal, how you use that information is crucial: “The teams know by the radar where the weather is coming from and how long it’s going to last. You’ll be aware of what the weather’s doing roughly, and then you can make your call, just like you would in real life.”

“Players can be going along outside the points, and maybe they make a gamble. The clouds come in, the skies darken. Maybe you pre-empt that the rain’s going to come now and you change your tyres early. Player choice is going to be critical at those stages,” added Senior Producer Paul Jeal.

In career mode, F1 2010’s weather system is fully dynamic, mirroring real life conditions which change at any time, whether between sessions or during a session itself. The weather authentically reflects the conditions at each of the 19 GRAND PRIX locations, meaning rain is unlikely at Abu Dhabi but conditions can be unpredictable at Spa and Silverstone. Presenting a further challenge, players can set the weather conditions and experience the dramatic affect they have on racing in GRAND PRIX, Time Trial and Multiplayer modes.

More than just a visual affect, the dynamic weather system in F1 2010 is an integral part of the game’s Active Track technology. This system means that the track is fully aware of how much grip, water, rubber, dust or marbles there is for every 30cm² of track surface, allowing players to see and take advantage of realistic drying lines during wet races as cars displace water from the racing line in real time.

Players will have to adapt their race strategy on the fly to accommodate for the changing conditions and will be able to gamble on a particular strategy that could lead to them gaining or losing places. Being on the wrong tyres at the wrong time could well ruin the chances of a positive race result.

To ensure F1 2010 will deliver the most authentic recreation of weather conditions ever seen in a racing game, former FORMULA ONE driver Anthony Davidson has been embedded into the team to give a driver’s perspective on the affects that changing conditions have upon the car and race strategy.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops To Have Dedicated PC Servers
- 17 Comments
It was pretty much a given, but now Call Of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch has confirmed that they'll be using dedicated servers for their new title, thankfully ignoring the 'advances' that Infinity Ward's IWNet 'offered.'

When asked whether the popular feature would be present in Black Ops in the new issue of PC Zone, Lamia replied, "I think dedicated servers are excellent. I don't see any reason not to see them unless... well, I just don't see any reason not to."

"It seems people like them and we're excited about what we're doing right now."

Lamia showed his appreciation of how much dedicated servers meant to a lot of PC gamers:

"We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides."

"We're working very hard to marry those two things, so people can run dedicated servers and also participate in the communal experience the console players get to have, given they're all on first-party servers."

Fable III Revealed For PC Through Box Art
- 8 Comments
Lionhead's Xbox 360 exclusive title "Fable III" has the internet buzzing today with the possibility of a PC version of the game. MS released the box art below, and then pulled it. One can only speculate at this time as to whether or not the box revealing Windows availability was stamped accordingly in error, as a media prank, or if Fable III truly is heading to PC and the company was merely not ready to announce it yet. Either way, I'm sure we'll be hearing more on this later today.

Update: Microsoft says to "stay tuned." Typically, they offer a "Microsoft does not comment on rumour or speculation" canned response, so the likelihood of this being real is high. Now, the real question - will we also receive Fable II? The overall storyline might not make a whole lot of sense with the middle chapter missing.

Rollercoaster Tycoon Heading To Big Screen
- 4 Comments
Oh lordy, this made me spit my coffee... Sony Pictures Animation has picked up rights to "Rollercoaster Tycoon", and is said to be developing a live-action / CGI hybrid. While a fan of the game, I can't really visualize a good storyline for Rollercoaster Tycoon. I wonder if people will walk around puking all over the place. Hrm, deep thoughts.

The "Tycoon" franchise, created by Chris Sawyer, is a popular series of computer games that simulate a combination of designing roller coasters and amusement park management. Each game challenges players with open-ended amusement park management and development while allowing them to construct and customize their own unique roller coasters.

The games are popular in the PC world, generating more than $300 million in sales and giving Atari bragging rights for having the third-best-selling PC title of all time in the U.S.

Harald Zwart is spearheading the development of the big-screen adaptation as a possible directing project and will executive produce. He directed Sony's "The Karate Kid," the upcoming remake of the 1980s classic that is produced by Will Smith and stars his son Jaden Smith.

EverQuest II Introducing A Travel Re-Vamp

One of the things coming with the EverQuest II Halas Reborn content update will be a revamp of the game's travel system. New travel maps will provide players with more information and give them a better sense of where they are going. Players will use less hops to get to any given location using new teleportation locations and spire teleporters, as well as by linking the bell network together. The Qeynos and Freeport bells will still work for intra-city travel, but the global bells have been replaced with "Globe of Swift Travel". Click on the globe and the travel map is displayed showing travel options. Players can also mouse over an option for information on each area, including level range. Sounds pretty funky cold medina.
