Sure, pretty much everybody (even EA, with the venerable Command & Conquer series) has given up on the classic real-time strategy model of resource-gathering, base-building, and tank-rushing. Point capturing, unit caps, culture rushing, and a whole host of new gameplay models have come into favor with the RTS public in the long period between StarCraft and its upcoming sequel. Activision made Bungie an offer it couldn't refuse, allowing the Halo developer to remain fully independent while keeping complete control over the intellectual property it creates. According to one report, that's exactly the type of pact Activision could have made with former Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella, a deal that would have allowed the publisher to avoid the very messy and very public legal battle that has erupted.
