The EverQuest II Game Passport - Fail?
SOE is up to some weird shenanigans with its EverQuest II Game Passport, a new subscription plan for casual players and multi-boxers. For $5 you can play for three consecutive days in a 30 day period. Basically for people that just want to take advantage of game update events, bonus XP weekends, those who only play on weekends, people that use alternate accounts from time to time, and for taking advantage of special in-game promotions. This "offer" is for veteran closed and inactive accounts only, and not new players. To continue playing after the three days you must convert to a standard sub.

I'm no mathematical genius, but isn't this a major rip? Three days for $5 = $1.67 per day. Full month subscription, we'll say $15 per month for 31 days = $0.48. How is 3 days of play per month of any use to even the most casual of players? Why would anyone use this "passport" when for another $10 you can login any time you like? Too much thinking. Must... take... some... aspirin.

As requested by the community, here is the exhaustive all inclusive changelist of all balance updates made in the R10 Server update and R7 patch for PC.

  • Increased the base range of all Automatic and Semiautomatic weapons for more consistent close range combat.
  • Slightly increased the damage of Semiautomatic rifles over long range for more consistent damage output.
  • Increased the zoomed burst accuracy of LMGs and decreased LMG accuracy when moving to reduce LMG run and gun.
  • Decreased the base damage of the M60 and XM8 LMGs to bring them in line with the other LMG damage values.
  • Decreased the damage of the PKM over long range to balance it with other LMGs.
  • Increased the base damage of the Type88 LMG to balance it with other LMGs.

  • Slightly reduced the base damage of the M16 and G3 to balance the increased range.
  • Slightly increased the damage of the AEK971, F2000, AN94, and AUG over long range to balance them with other Assault Rifles.

  • Reduced the lethal blast range of the 40mm grenade and M2CG to highlight their role as a secondary weapon against infantry.
  • Slightly Reduced the max range of the 40mm shotgun to balance it with other shotguns.
  • Slightly increased the base damage of shotgun rounds and reduced their range to clarify ideal shotgun combat distance.

  • Reduced the base damage of the PP2000 to balance the increased range.
  • Increased the damage of the 9A91 over long range to balance its lower magazine size.

  • Increased the damage and range of the M9, M93 pistols to make them more desirable as a secondary weapon.

  • Increased the damage of the MP412 over long range to balance its low rate of fire.
  • Slightly reduced the rate of fire of the M1911 pistol to balance it with other pistols.

  • Increased the repair and overheat speeds of the Power Tool. Now overheats sooner but repairs the same amount before overheating.
  • Increased the maximum number of Motion Sensors that can be carried from 2 to 3 and increased the speed which new sensors are acquired from ammo boxes.
  • Significantly increased the speed of the Tracer Dart projectile to make it more effective against airborne targets.
  • Increased the reload time of the Mortar Strike and reduced the damage it does to heavily armored vehicles.
  • Decreased the range of Bolt Action Sniper and Pump Shotgun Slug rounds when using Magnum Ammo for better Kit Balance, especially in Hardcore.
  • Slightly increased the Health of soldiers in Hardcore for better Kit Balance.

  • Increased the benefit from the Medkit Heal+ specialization to make it more desirable as a Specialization.
  • Decreased the benefit from Vehicle Reload Speed to balance it against other Vehicle Specializations.
  • Slightly decreased the benefit from accuracy specializations to balance the changes to range and accuracy tweaks.

  • Fixed a bug where the BMD3 would take extra damage to the front armor.
  • Reduced the explosive damage from Attack Helicopter cannons.
  • Increased the damage of AA guns against all targets. The AA gun should be much more effective against infantry on Port Valdez.

These changes will eventually make their way to the 360 and PS3 as we work with our partners Microsoft and Sony to continue to support BFBC2 on all platforms.

Modern Warfare 2 The Most Successful Entertainment Launch Of All Time
    - 17 Comments
The Guinness Book Of Records claims that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's launch was the most successful of any piece of entertainment media ever released:

Guinness World Records, the global authority on record-breaking, today confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision/Infinity Ward, 2009) became the most successful entertainment launch of all time when it released on November 10th, 2009. With verified one day sales totaling more than $401.6 million (£242.4 million) worldwide, the action-packed first-person shooter video game was the fastest selling entertainment product in its first 24 hours on sale, breaking the Guinness World Record previously set by the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Shattering all entertainment launch records set by box office, book and album sales, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 blew past the record-setting video game launches of Grand Theft Auto IV, which grossed $310 million (£159 million) in its first day on sale in 2008, and the previous record-holder, Halo 3, which took in $170 million (£84 million) its first 24 hours on sale.

"Video game releases such as the Call of Duty series have outperformed the launches of major Hollywood blockbusters for several years and the day-one sales for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 proved once again that video games have become cultural events in their own right," said Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition Editor, Gaz Deaves. "The fan movement and hype surrounding this game in the run-up to launch was almost unprecedented in scale; we acknowledged early on that the big question wasn't if it would break all-time entertainment records, but rather by how much."

"This achievement is a reflection of the support from our community of fans around the world," said Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling from developer Infinity Ward. "The Call of Duty series and Modern Warfare have been our passion - we've dedicated our lives to giving our best, so it's an honour to be recognised by setting a new standard among all entertainment properties."

Blizzard Drops The Banhammer On 320,000 Cheaters
    - 8 Comments
Over 320,000 Diablo II and Warcraft III cheaters have been banned from Battle.net as part of Blizzard's continuing action to keep their multiplayer modes safe and fair:

We’ve recently banned over 320,000 Warcraft III and Diablo II accounts that were found to be violating the Battle.net Terms of Use. If this is a first offense, the CD key associated with the banned account will be suspended for 30 days, while repeat offenders will see their keys banned permanently. All account ban decisions are final.

We would like all players to remember that abuse of unintended mechanics and/or use of third party programs is a violation of the agreement made when signing on to Battle.net, and can subject your account to disciplinary action up to and including a permanent ban of its access to the service. These types of activities can severely impact the stability of our servers, and we’ll continue to aggressively monitor Battle.net in order to protect the service and its players from the harmful effects of cheating.

Many account closures come as the direct result of tips emailed to our hacks team by legitimate Battle.net users. If you come across a hack, find a site responsible for distributing hacks, or have a replay of a newly available hack, please report this to our hacks team at hacks@blizzard.com or through our Hacks Report Form.

As always, thank you for your continued support, and we'll see you on Battle.net!

Team Fortress 2 Item Drop Revamp
In an effort to end idle item farming and randomness, Valve has completely revamped how Team Fortress 2 players are awarded hats and other in-game items:

Today we're shipping some significant changes to the item drop system.

  • Previously, we rolled randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop. Now we roll to determine when your next item drop will occur. So you're guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. The bulk of drop complaints we've received in the past have been from players having unlucky streaks, where they didn't find any items for weeks. That won't be possible now.

  • We've significantly increased the rate at which item drops occur, compared to the previous average interval.

  • There's now a maximum amount of playtime per week in which you get item drops. Playing beyond that amount won't find any more items. The amount varies, but if you play an hour or so a day you're good. Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine.

What are the net effects of these changes? Here's the quick summary:

  • If you're an idler, you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change. Sorry. On the bright side, there's less reason to idle, because it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly.

  • Everyone else will find items more frequently, and with greater regularity.

We're still thinking about how to allow you to influence your drops. When we see discussions on the forums, people often ask why we don't tie it to some in-game performance (like your scoreboard position, or number of kills, etc). Many players understand that if we did this, idle servers would simply change into servers running plugins that generate those in-game events frequently (as we saw in the Soldier & Demoman WAR!).

There's another side of it that we care about just as much, which is the message it would send to all the players who don't want to idle. Any in-game performance metric we chose would result in there being specific maps, classes, tactics, and so on that resulted in more drops. We really don't want that to happen. When it's simply playtime, you're free to play the game however you like. If you love Payload, you can play Payload maps without worrying about whether you're earning less drops than the guys playing Arena maps. Community mapmakers don't have to worry about whether their maps earn item drops fast enough. Similarly, server operators can configure their servers however they like, without worrying about reducing the rate at which their players are earning drops. In short, while it's far from perfect, not tying to in-game performance is a lot less poisonous to your minute-to-minute game experience.

    Fox Buys Development Studio
Our corporate overlords intend to get back into the gaming business, having purchased a three-man startup in San Francisco:

News Corp. has acquired Irata Labs, a three-person San Francisco developer that builds games and other applications for social networks. Terms of the deal, closed late last week, were not disclosed.

Irata is best known for creating Spymaster, an espionage game that lets players use Twitter to perform cloak-and-dagger activities, such as ordering assassinations, securing a safe house or buying items on the black market. It's believed to be the first game to use the microblogging platform. The developers also are building the technology that would allow it to incorporate a user's location into game play.

One of Irata's first offerings, iList Micro, let users search Twitter as they would classified advertising sections, to find items offered for sale by ZIP code or category.

"The fact they built a social classified offering, iList, then they built a Twitter game -- these guys have shown they can be mold-breakers with great product. And that's what we care about," said a person close to the acquisition.

Irata won't be incorporated into either of News Corp.'s major online assets, the MySpace social network or the game review site IGN. Instead, the developers are expected to work with those divisions whenever it makes sense, said a person familiar with the matter.

    Warner Bros. Acquires Turbine
In a surprising move, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has just announced the acquisition of Turbine, developers of Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online and Asheron's Call. According to reports, Warner Bros. will pay as much as $160 million, including a shell-out for Turbine shareholders in the future if the company meets financial targets.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced today the acquisition of Turbine, Inc., the largest privately-held online gaming studio in North America, further strengthening Warner Bros.’ position as one of the industry’s fastest growing, full-scale games publishers.

“Turbine is a leader in online entertainment and a strong strategic fit for Warner Bros. as we continue to broaden our games portfolio and development capabilities,” said Kevin Tsujihara, president, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. “Turbine’s renowned online game development and publishing expertise will help us develop additional online product offerings, while also providing us with new and innovative ways to market and communicate with our consumers.”

Founded in 1994 and operating primarily in Boston, Turbine has created some of the most popular and exciting gaming worlds on the Internet, including Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited, the world’s best free-to-play massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) and The Lord of the Rings Online, the first and only MMORPG based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. Previously, Warner Bros. held all The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) games rights, with the exception of the literary MMO (massively multiplayer online game) rights. Now all games rights for the LOTR franchise will be unified under the Warner Bros. shield.

“We have been looking to expand access to our online worlds to more players and more markets,” said Jim Crowley, president and CEO, Turbine, Inc. “This acquisition is very exciting because it allows us to expand globally while continuing to focus on creating spectacular online games that our loyal fans and players have come to expect.”

Additionally, the acquisition of Turbine provides Warner Bros. with access to a proprietary digital publishing platform that enables dynamic direct-to-consumer relationships, robust online merchandising opportunities and vibrant e-commerce functionality for online games. Turbine has also developed a social networking platform that can integrate their self-developed online communities with popular third-party social networks. Outside of the games arena, these platforms present unique opportunities for Warner’s other home entertainment businesses.

“Turbine is recognized globally for its industry-leading technology, groundbreaking graphics and its unique ability to create and operate massive and persistent online worlds which greatly enhance players’ social gaming experiences,” said Martin Tremblay, president, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online have both been an enormous success for Turbine and we look forward to working with their talented development team to continue creating award-winning online games.”

In 2007, Warner Bros. acquired TT Games, developer of the hit LEGO-based game franchises, including LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Batman, which have wide appeal with players of all ages. Early in 2009, Warner Bros. acquired Snowblind Studios to develop its The Lord of the Rings games franchise, with the first title The Lord of the Rings: War in the North expected to be released in 2011. Also in 2009, the Studio purchased the primary assets of Midway Games. Midway published the Mortal Kombat franchise, which has sold over 26 million units worldwide. Most recently, Warner Bros. acquired a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios, a privately held developer of interactive entertainment targeted at teens and adults.

Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing Out This Thursday; Is Free On PC
    - 12 Comments
Valve has announced that The Passing will be released this Thursday, and that it will be free on the PC:

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first game add-on for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2 The Passing, is due for release Thursday, April 22 exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the PC.

The first game add-on for Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) brings the original Left 4 Dead (L4D1) Survivors down south for a meeting with the L4D2 cast, while delivering new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay for the PC and Xbox 360.

The Passing also introduces a series of weekly game mode events dubbed "Mutations." These week-long runs of new gameplay modes range from "Realism Versus" mode to "Chainsaw Massacre," which gives all players chainsaws with an unlimited supply of gasoline. There are over 20 Mutations planned, each playable on all L4D2 Campaigns. Mutations are exclusively available to owners of "The Passing" DLC.

In addition, "The Passing" offers a new co-operative challenge mode of play, support for infected bot play in Versus, a new "uncommon common" zombie class (the fallen survivor), melee weapon (golf club), and firearm (M-60).

Available for 560 Microsoft Points on Xbox 360 and free on the PC, "The Passing" takes place just after the Dead Center campaign of L4D2. Set in a small town in rural Georgia, players assume the role of the L4D2 Survivors as they meet with the L4D1 characters.

Exclusively available for Xbox 360 and the PC, L4D2 sets a new benchmark for co-operative action games. The title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaws, frying pans, axes, baseball bats, and more.

With the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Finally, with new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original, featuring more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, new Survival maps, and the new competitive game mode, Scavenge.

    Dead Rising 2 Trailer
Though not shown in this trailer, Capcom has announced that Dead Rising 2 will include two-player campaign co-op, in addition to the four-player versus modes:

    Story:

The sequel to the million-plus selling Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2 sees the player take on the role of forner Motocross champion Chuck Greene, who has come to Fortune City, America's newest gambling paradise, to compete in “Terror is Reality,” a gruesome game show that dares contestants to survive zombie-filled environments for the delight of TV audiences around the globe. Chuck’s motivation for taking part and risking life and limb is his daughter Katey who has been bitten by a zombie. She requires a daily dose of Zombrex to prevent her from turning into a zombie. There’s no denying that Zombrex works, but since its the only drug of its kind on the market, its price is high. During his time in Fortune City a zombie outbreak occurs and Chuck must survive the onslaught of the undead for 72 hours. Pitted against two fearsome threats – tens of thousands of zombies and the constant countdown of the clock – while potentially rescuing other survivors of the zombie apocalypse, players must also unravel the greater conspiracy behind the outbreak and as importantly find the Zombrex necessary to stop Katey from joining the ever growing zombie horde. Players will shoot, stab, carve and drive their way through enemies in order to beat the clock and survive 72hours in the darkly comedic, no holds-barred confines of Fortune City.

    Gameplay:

Dead Rising 2 will deliver more of the signature gameplay that the series is known for plus a number of new features.

Players who might need some help or simply want to share the zombie bashing fun with a friend will now be able to play in online 2-player co-op. Simply use the in-game transceiver to call for assistance at any time and once your partner has accepted, they will arrive by the player’s side for double the action.

With hundreds of zombies on screen at any one time, the original Dead Rising forced gamers to take everyday objects they found in the Mall and use them as weapons. But now, in Dead Rising 2 with thousands of zombies filling every square inch of Fortune City, Chuck is going to need to be even more resourceful and inventive by combining weapons in order to save the day.

Players will be able to take two objects, a roll of tape and with a little inventiveness create an advanced zombie-killing combo weapon - a piece of wood and a lawnmower become Portamower, the handheld mower that cuts zombies down to size in an instant, while a garden rake and car battery combine to create an electrified zombie prod. The more combo weapons a player uses, the more Prestige Points (PPs) they will gain along the way in order to level up Chuck.

Ahead of the full game, Capcom will release original downloadable content exclusively on Xbox Live with Dead Rising 2: CASE ZERO. This Prologue consists of unique content not available in the full retail release of Dead Rising 2 will introduce new protagonist Chuck Greene as he and his daughter find themselves caught in the desert town of Still Creek thathas been overrun with zombies. Set two years after the Willamette incident and three before the action of Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 2: CASE ZERO will help bridge the gap between the two titles and give players a taste of the new gameplay they will experience in Dead Rising 2 as they create combo weapons, rescue survivors and take on a ruthless Psychos before making their escape.

Dead Rising 2 is being developed by Canadian developer Blue Castle Games in close collaboration with Capcom. A number of members from the original Dead Rising team will be working alongside Blue Castle Games throughout the development process, including Capcom’s global head of research and development, Keiji Inafune, who as the game’s Producer, is playing an active role in the project.

    Features:

  • Thousands of Zombies On Screen: The undead are everywhere creating a dynamic and challenging zombie-killing experience for the player as weapons will be created to kill massive amounts of zombies at one time!

  • New Storyline and Characters: A new protagonist, Chuck Greene, is just the beginning in a long list of new characters, new survivors and new more vicious psychos that will be introduced to fans in the new world of Dead Rising

  • 2-Player Co-Op: Co-op play is introduced to the Dead Rising universe for the first time as players can invite their friends to partner up with them at any time to take on the zombie massacre- tag-team style! Play with a friend and have even more fun as you lure zombies in using strategic items like a toy helicopter or a firecracker. Once the zombies have gathered, your friend can rain bullets from above or shoot at a strategically-placed gas tank to create a deadly explosion that will take out masses of the enemy. Killing zombies with a friend is always more fun!

  • Terror is Reality: Allows 4 players to compete in a gladiator type show that pits zombies against a group of players in the ultimate Vs. multiplayer blood bath

  • Combo Weapons; Players can combine two everyday items using duct tape to create the ultimate zombie killing creations such as the Portamower and Paddlesaw. Unlocking combo cards along the way will give players the advantage as the helpful cards will show you what items are best for combining . The more zombies you destroy using your creative combo’s, the more Prestige Points you can earn which levels up Chuck along the way.
