In SCC, Sam Fisher is on a personal quest and he doesn’t follow the same code he used to. That’s the reason why Sam is more violent. Everything is about effectiveness.Sam needs to get information? He will do what he needs to get them. Even if it means smashing the American flag into the collarbone of a drug dealer (yes, you can actually do that in the game).
Similarly, if someone stands between Sam and his goal, he’s going to be brutal, he’s going to be efficient and he is going to use the best technique. And when it comes to close combat, Krav maga is the perfect match. This Israeli self-defense system is not a martial art. It was derived from street-fighting and emphasizes aggression and offensive maneuvers.
When we were looking for a fighting style for Sam, the choice seemed obvious. We met with international instructors to adapt those fighting techniques to Sam’s personality and available tools. Krav maga is quite a versatile discipline and we were able to include gun shots in Sam’s close quarter combat moves. We worked with the best athletes through motion capture sessions to get the best possible result in game.
Obviously, the stealth aspect was one of our primary concerns and, even if the moves look impressive and violent, they’re always silent and provide an excellent option to get rid of your enemies while remaining undetected.

BTC 103 – More than a century before the Sacking of Coruscant, two Jedi scholars embarked on a journey which became one of most inexplicable mysteries of its time. Young Jedi Knight Eison Gynt joined his Master in a mission to investigate the Ancient Sith Temple of Yavin 4. On Yavin, the pair was attacked by the native Massassi and driven into the Tomb of Naga Sadow where a powerful force of darkness emerged. Gynt’s Master returned to Coruscant wounded and half-insane, remorseful that young Eison Gynt had been killed in the chaos. Years later, however, Gynt returned from Yavin on his own and attacked his former Master. Gynt was killed and all assumed that he had been tainted by the darkness on Yavin 4 and returned to Coruscant for revenge. Nonetheless, the truth, as Master Gnost-Dural has discovered, may have been far more sinister.
At Valve, we like to play games made by other people, mainly because a) we don't have to make them, and b) they're generally more fun than ours anyway. In particular, games made by other people don't have Pyros named Eric Smith, who makes our collective lives miserable on a daily basis in playtests. (If you ever wonder why features like "Pyro now gets assists for airblasting enemies into environmental hazards" keep getting added to the game, thank Eric. Not content with killing us by just holding down W+M1, he persists in finding bold new ways to get points by any means necessary.)It turns out that not only do we play other games--other game developers play ours. Last year Telltale Games' TF2 Team went head to head with us in the TF2 Studio Rumble tournament, in the process dominating our own Adrian Finol so hard that he made up an excuse about "picking up my kids somewhere" and went and sat in his car for an hour. After the match, we all agreed that one of these days we should do something cool together, because they're big fans of TF2, and we're big fans of getting advance copies of Sam & Max episodes.
Fast forward to now, and doodly-doodly-doot: We're doing something cool together. To celebrate the release of The Penal Zone, the first episode in Sam & Max's new adventure, The Devil's Playhouse, the Telltale team has provided us with some awesome TF2 items. We're going to give them out to everyone who buys The Penal Zone in the next week.
That's right: one week only. It's like the Soldier medal all over again, except this time you have no excuse about being too asleep in bed to download it in time. The items:
Max's Severed Head
It's not often you're given the gift of a beloved character's decapitated head by the very studio responsible for that character. Still, we're not complaining. It's soft, it wicks away moisture in the heat of battle, it highlights our eyes. It's got us thinking about all the other game characters we could be wearing around as clothes.

Max's PistolWho wouldn't want to squeeze off a couple rounds with the murder weapon of choice of a sociopathic cartoon rabbit? Probably quite a lot of people, when you get right down to it. Luckily, those people are all well-adjusted contributors to society with no police records, spotless credit ratings and few unresolvable moral failings. They also probably have no interest in playing TF2, so that means more murder-rabbit gun shooting for the rest of us.
Sam's Revolver
This might look like an ordinary revolver, until you realize that it helps a talking dog solve crimes. How many crimes has YOUR dog solved lately? And let's face it, his revolver kind of sucks too. Man, we want to talk about this gun more, but we can't get over how much your dog sucks.
So there's the loot, folks. Get over to Steam and take a look at The Penal Zone. (And to answer your question, no. We asked. It doesn't mean what we thought it meant.)
A new Team Fortress 2 patch accompanied the release of the items:
As I said at our analyst event back in November, our priorities this year are to deliver compelling platforms, increase access to customer demand and transform our business model. In the first quarter of this year, we made good progress on each of these priorities, and an improving global economic environment, we delivered record first quarter revenue coupled with good operating performance.
Our platform execution continued to be solid across the board, with key new products transitions initiated in each of our main businesses. In graphics, we shipped a total over six million DX enables units to date, and expanded the family into the mainstream and value segments.
In addition, we unveiled the industry’s first DX 11 products for notebooks where we continue to grow share. Demand for all of our DX 11 products is very healthy and continues to outpace supply.
No Doubt sued Activision after the game was released in November, saying its contract authorized the use of avatars representing each of the four band members in three No Doubt songs, but that Activision made it possible for the avatars to be “unlocked” and used in conjunction with several dozen other songs that came with the game. No Doubt argued that Activision breached their contract, which required prior written approval for any other uses of the band’s music or likenesses. On Thursday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kenji Machida issued a tentative ruling rejecting Activision’s effort to invoke freedom-of-speech protections under the 1st Amendment in defense of the broader use of the No Doubt avatars.
Activision had previously moved to shift the case to federal court, framing it as a copyright issue rather than a right-of-publicity issue as argued by No Doubt, a strategy that also was rejected by the court. Activision has the right to appeal Machida's ruling.
Courtney Love is suing Activision on similar grounds for the overuse of Kurt Cobain's image.
Interplay Entertainment Corp. and G1M2 will partner to bring the classic Descent to the Wii.“Descent remains the most popular 1080º 3D blasting game. Translating its 3D worlds and game play to WiiWare is an exciting move”, said Hervé Caen, CEO of Interplay. “Descent will pair perfectly with the motion sensing Wii Remote controller and we can't wait to show players how intuitive the game play and control can be” seconded Scott Hawkins, the Founder of G1M2.
Descent is expected for initial release during Fall 2010 and is planned for electronic distribution through Nintendo's WiiWare service.
“Following Clayfighter DSiWare & WiiWare, and Stonekeep WiiWare, Interplay continues to redevelop its fantastic portfolio of games,” Hervé Caen concluded.
