Pirates of the Burning Sea Getting First Major Expansion
- 2 Comments
Flying Lab Software has revealed a features list for "Power & Prestige", the first major expansion to Pirates of the Burning Sea. Coming out this summer, Power & Prestige will be taking in beta testers (active subscription required). Here's the scoop on the features:

The games new features include the highly anticipated Port Governance feature, over 60 new missions, and new NPC factions.

Power & Prestige™ expands upon the game’s already robust real-time Conquest system, allowing players to not only capture ports on behalf of their parent nations, but to also become a Port Governor with great economic and strategic influence.

Pirates of the Burning Sea: Power & Prestige™ Feature List:

  • Port Governance
Become the Governor of a port! In Power & Prestige™, players and player societies can spend influence to elect Governors in ports throughout the Burning Sea. Once elected Governor, you can:
    • Display your name under the port's name in the Open Sea, or choose to share the glory with their whole society. You can also set a message that greets anyone who enters the port.
    • Take important economic and military actions such as setting the tax rate of the port, improving the port's infrastructure, reducing the port's unrest, and boosting the port's defenses.
    • Draw a salary from the port's coffers.
    • Display a special title while you are governor, and access an exclusive shop to purchase special governor-only items.
  • Content
We are adding over 60 new missions to the game, using new techniques to produce content that is even more exciting and challenging.
    • We have added new content to ensure that you can reach Celebrated reputation with your favorite player-friendly factions and be rewarded for it!
    • We are introducing four new "Pirate Hunter" factions: the Board of Marque, the Men of War, the Salon d'Aventure and the Corsarios del Rey. Each of these new privateering factions has unique storyline missions available to all nations!
    • Factions will have shops that offer outfitting, customizable clothing and sails to players who have earned sufficient respect.
    • We’re adding new repeatable missions as part of Port Governance: Governor's Requests! Complete the bonus objectives to infuse your favorite port's treasury.
  • Avatar skill revision
We’ve giving our Avatar Combat skills an overhaul, and we’re separating out Brawling to be its own fighting school.

  • Ship Combat Tuning
We’re giving every ship in the game a significant revision, and we’re adding new features to help combat troublesome outfitting stacking!

  • Career Improvements
Each of our five careers is getting a complete revision, which will include the addition of new skills allowing for more tactical gameplay.

  • Character Lighting Improvements
Character lighting in towns and other environments has been overhauled to look more realistic.

Alpha Protocol PC To Utilise Uniloc DRM
Alpha Protocol, Obsidian's spy RPG, will utilise Uniloc's SoftAnchor copy protection suite to protect the PC version from thieving pirates:

Uniloc came under fire in November 2008 when Football Manager 2009 owners had trouble authenticating games online. SEGA said that was due to high demand and a small key-printing hiccup.

Actual solid details on how Uniloc tools work are hard to find on the company's website. However, we're promised a "polite" and "unobtrusive" DRM solution that will run "without compromising your legal users' experience".

Who are we kidding, the DRM will probably crap out again while the pirates play with impunity.

The Infinity Ward Exodus Continues
Lead Designers Steve Fukuda and Zied Reike, Programmer Rayme Vinson, and Lead Artist Chris Cherubini are the latest employees to resign from Infinity Ward, bringing the total to eleven when including fired founders Jason West and Vince Zampella. Fukuda and Rike were nominated for a Writers Guild Of America award for Modern Warfare 2's implausible story, suggesting that Modern Warfare 3's script could either get a hell of a lot worse, or a whole load better.

In total, Infinity Ward has around one hundred employees, including the tea lady and cleaner, so the departure of many high profile staff could have an effect on Modern Warfare 3, already said to be delayed by West and Zampella's insubordinate actions.

Dead Space Novel Announced
Dead Space: Martyr acts as a prequel to the events portrayed in Dead Space Extraction and Dead Space, and presumably the comic books and animated movie too:

Tor Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC—the largest publisher of science fiction in the world—and Visceral Games, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc., today announced Dead Space: Martyr (A Tor Trade Paperback; $14.99; July 20th 2010), the first novel based on the award-winning Dead Space videogame franchise. Dead Space: Martyr delves into the back story of the fiction including the history of the Church of Unitology, the discovery of the enigmatic “Black Marker” and the mysteries behind an alien artefact of unknown power. Dead Space: Martyr will be available in July 2010 at select retailers worldwide.

When geophysicist Michael Altman learns of a mysterious signal emitting from deep within the Chicxulub crater, he cannot resist the lure of an undiscovered artefact. He soon learns that being in close proximity to the artefact causes strange occurrences - visions of the dead, vivid dreams, and violent murders. Altman’s experience with the alien artefact leads to this crucial first chapter in the Dead Space saga.

“One of the most compelling storytelling aspects of Dead Space has been the Church of Unitology: its origins, power, and role in Dead Space,” says Tor editor, Eric Raab. “Writer B.K. Evenson gets into the terrifying aspects of mob mentality like no other writer today. This isn’t only a great story within the Dead Space universe; it’s a great novel on its own.”

“The Dead Space world is incredibly vast and rich -- expanding its fiction into a novel lets us share parts of the story that just can’t fit into videogames,” said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of Dead Space 2. “We hope Dead Space: Martyr will be the first of many books to let fans dive deeply into Dead Space’s secrets and immersive lore.”

B. K. Evenson is the award-winning author of Last Days, voted best horror novel of 2009 by the American Library Association and The Open Curtain, a 2006 Edgar Award finalist and Time Out New York best book of the year.

Pre-order from Amazon for $10.11.

2K Games Finally Announces The New X-COM!
2K Games has finally announced the long-rumoured X-COM reboot. In development at BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin, the new X-COM will be released on PC and Xbox 360 at a future, to-be-announced date:

2K Games announced today that XCOM, the re-imagining of one of gaming’s most storied and beloved franchises, is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind the multi-million unit selling BioShock 2. Currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

Halo MMO Was Going To Be 'The Next Big Thing'
IncGamers got the lowdown on the cancelled "Halo MMO" from ex-Ensemble Studios' Dusty Monk. The Halo MMO was in development prior to Ensemble's closure, in fact three years of work went into the game which was codenamed "Titan". Monk believes that Halo MMO was "absolutely going to compete against WoW".

"You have to remember that Ensemble came from a standpoint of being really good at competing against Blizzard Entertainment," he noted, drawing comparisons between the success of the Warcraft series and the success of the Age of Empires series. "We had a pretty good history of knowing the types of stuff that Blizzard put into their games to make them really successful, and the kinds of things we'd need to put into an MMO to compete against Blizzard." In fact, he used those two little words that everyone hates... "WoW killer".

"Just to give you a couple of examples," Monk elaborated, "we were using a heroic stylised artform. This heroic stylised artform is exactly the artform that you see being used in Star Wars: The Old Republic right now. It's timeless. It doesn't age itself like a game that's built with a strictly realistic artform does."

"We were developing a cover system. This cover system is in Star Wars: The Old Republic. We had the idea of quests - and like I said, this was between 2004 and 2007, before Warhamer Online had been released - but we had this idea of quests where you could participate and pull them together without having to be on the same team. This would be a public quest that everyone in a particular area could work on. That idea went into Warhammer Online."

Asheron's Call Gets New Playable Race
Turbine has announced new features and a new playable race for Asheron's Call. The race is... a Shadow. You can read more here.

Players can now choose to be a Shadow, living among the peoples of Dereth! Isin Dule has harnessed the power of the Lifestones to grant those who want it, a chance at life among those who follow the light! You can read more about the new playable race here!

Aetheria - By researching the ancient writings of Empyrean magic, the Archmages of the Arcanum have unlocked the secrets of a new kind of magic that the Empyreans called Aetheria. In ancient times, powerful Empyrean mages learned to infuse Aetheria in Dereth with pure mana to empower it. Find out more here!

Barbers and Hairstyles - In addition, barbers have also set up shop to prepare people for the wedding. These artisans can help you freshen up your look, using their expert techniques to restyle your hair and freshen your look. Their craft is not entirely mundane for they can even change your appearance as they freshen up your look. Located near the tailors, you simply talk to the barbers. If you can pay their price you will find a variety of options appear to allow you to change your style. The barbers are very particular about their time, however. You pay up front, and their fee stands regardless of what look you choose, even if change your mind and get cold feet.

Multi-slot Armor - Many blacksmiths have worked their craft in the lands of Dereth and ancient armor can be found all over. It is not uncommon for smiths to create large pieces of armor that offer coverage over multiple areas of the body. To the discerning adventurer trying to create the perfect suit of armor, however, these larger pieces can be inconvenient to fit into their suit even though the piece may have powerful magics and look very good when worn. Smiths have perfected powerful craft magic which will rework these pieces so they are much more efficient and cover less area. This allows adventurers to more easily fit pieces into existing suits.

Heavy Rain Goes Platinum At Retail
Quantic Dream's Playstation 3-exclusive adventure game has sold over a million copies worldwide in just five weeks:

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced the millionth sale of Heavy Rain for PlayStation 3 worldwide - just five weeks after its launch at the end of February. The game has become an overnight sensation for its combination of gripping plot, thought-provoking themes and emotional involvement. The critics are raving about the new possibilities in emotive, open-ended play and cinematic gaming that Heavy Rain delivers. Now, just five weeks in, the sales figures show that more than a million gamers agree with them. Years in the making, developer David Cage’s hugely innovative and ambitious project has paid off.

"It has been hugely gratifying to see the positive response that Heavy Rain has received from gamers” says David Cage, the Writer and Director of Heavy Rain and CEO of Quantic Dream. “It shows that it is possible to create games that break with convention, games that seek to tell complex stories, and games that can inspire unexpected emotions in players - and that such games can be commercial as well as critical successes. I hope that this success will continue to help pave the way for new, groundbreaking experiences."

“It’s a stunning achievement – not least because Heavy Rain is not a traditional blockbuster game,” says Mark Hardy, European Product Marketing Director at SCEE. “It’s a blend of gaming, drama and cinema – groundbreaking and utterly immersive for players – that defies the normal rules and lets you shape the story you play. It’s been wonderful to hear the reviewers admiring the game’s ambitiousness; however, the real delight has been in seeing the gamers taking Heavy Rain to their hearts so quickly. It shows that gamers are ready for more: more interactivity, more choice in how to play and more of the open-ended gaming experiences that only PlayStation is delivering.”

Gears Of War 3 HD Trailer, Game Info & Release Date
    - 40 Comments
A high definition version of the trailer from last night's Jimmy Fallon show, plus word on release dates and Avatar addons:

The spectacular conclusion to one of the games industry’s most memorable and celebrated sagas, “Gears of War 3,” is poised to take the world by storm next spring. At this time next year, fans around the world will experience the epic story finale to the “Gears of War” trilogy when the third installment in one of the biggest franchises in Xbox history arrives in stores worldwide: April 5, 2011 in North America and Asia, April 7 in Japan, and April 8 in Europe and the rest of the world.

“When we released ‘Gears of War’ more than three years ago, we set out to tell the world an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice in the face of insurmountable odds, and a year from now, players will get the chance to experience the final chapter in the story of Marcus Fenix and his companions in Delta Squad,” said Cliff Bleszinski, design director at Epic Games. “This is definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter yet in the ‘Gears of War’ saga, and we can’t wait to deliver it.”

Developed by acclaimed studio Epic Games and available only on Xbox 360, “Gears of War 3” plunges players into a harrowing tale of hope, survival, and brotherhood that will conclude the current story arc for “Gears of War.” With the last human city destroyed and the remaining survivors stranded, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race from the jaws of extinction.

“Gears of War” is a blockbuster entertainment franchise that has inspired a full line of toys and collectibles, apparel, an upcoming film, graphic novels and a book series by New York Times best-selling author Karen Traviss. The award-winning video games have sold more than 12 million units worldwide, and due to their riveting multiplayer action, are some of the most popular games ever played on Xbox LIVE.

To accompany today’s announcement, Microsoft and Epic Games unveiled “Ashes to Ashes,” the first trailer for “Gears of War 3.” Created in Unreal Engine 3 by the same team behind the iconic “Gears of War” video spots (“Mad World,” “Rendezvous,” and “Last Day”), the video captures a desperate three-way battle between Delta Squad, the Locust Horde, and the fearsome new Lambent.

Additionally, fans who want to share their excitement on Xbox LIVE will be able to choose from new Avatar items, available on Avatar Marketplace starting April 20, including the new COG armor introduced in “Gears of War 3.”
