Conviction is a Splinter Cell game in name more than anything else. You could easily swap Sam Fisher for Jack Bauer or create an all new character and no one would give it a second thought. The gameplay is fast, and Sam has been transformed into the ultimate killer. It's an amazing game, but so different from its predecessors you might not recognize it.Despite a few questionable level design choices, Splinter Cell Conviction is a great addition to the series. There's no way I could go back to a stealth game as it used to be; I've been converted. The only reason to hesitate and pick this up is if you only care about the single-player story and want nothing to do with anything else Conviction has to offer. If that's the case, then there's not a lot of game to be had. And also, you're nuts. The best parts of Conviction are the experiences you have long after you've left Sam Fisher behind.
In other news, the price of the Collector's Edition has been lowered by $10 because a number of the included USB drives are faulty.
Update: Watch IGN's video review here.
In the counter-suit, filed today, Activision makes a number of very serious allegations, suggesting that the fired pair attempted to "steal" Infinity Ward, "hold hostage" Modern Warfare 2, "delay pre-production" on Modern Warfare 3, and deliberately withhold royalty cheques from employees, in addition to syphoning the majority of said royalties into their own wallets:
Both men [Jason West and Vince Zampella] were justifiably terminated "for cause." Both men violated their employment contracts, and their fiduciary duties to Activision and its shareholders as executives of the company. Activision did not arrive at its decision to fire West and Zampella lightly or without good reason. In certain respects, West and Zampella were valuable executives at the company, as reflected by the success of the products developed by the team at Infinity Ward that they supervised, and by the tens of millions of dollars of extraordinary compensation that they received from Activision. Activision acted only after receiving the results of a formal investigation of the facts, after sober deliberations and, importantly, after it became apparent that Activision's attempts to convince West and Zampella to conform their conduct to that required of them by contract, company policy and as fiduciaries failed.
In the wake of the success of Activision/IW products such as Call Of Duty, and Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare developed by the IW studio, and published, marketed and distributed by Activision, West and Zampella morphed from valued, responsible executives into insubordinate and self-serving schemers who attempted to hijack Activision's assets for their own personal gain and whose actions threatened both the future of the Call Of Duty franchise and the future of Activision's IW studio.
Their actions included, among other things:
Surreptitiously and in violation of their duties as Activision executives, hiring agents and attorneys to negotiate with third parties for their future financial arrangements, notwithstanding the fact that they had years left on their exclusive employment contracts with Activision. Embarking on a secret trip by private jet to Northern California, arranged by their Hollywood agent, to meet with the most senior executives of Activision's closest competitor. Attempting to prevent Activision from awarding additional compensation to IW team members as a reward for the success of IW-developed games, in order to make these employees easier to poach when West and Zampella executed their plans to leave the company and set up their own company. Discussing with IW team members the desire of West and Zampella to leave Activision and engaging in discussions about their plans to have these employees leave Activision and join them. Attempting to force Activision to allow West and Zampella to keep only for themselves millions of dollars of discretionary compensation that Activision had intended to distribute to the other members of the IW studio in recognition of the team's value to the company. Engaging in insubordination in support of their efforts to identify the Modern Warfare franchise solely with IW and not with Activision. Belittling and demonizing executives and employees at Activision and other Activision-owned game development studios with the specific intention of alienating IW employees from Activision. Holding future editions of the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise hostage unless Activision acceded to their demand that were incompatible with their contractual commitments to Activision and their fiduciary duties to the company. West and Zampella's misdeeds formed an unlawful pattern and practice of conduct that was designed to steal the IW studio which is one of Activision's most valuable assets - at the expense of Activision and its shareholders and for their own personal financial gain. As a result of these and other actions, Activision was forced to sever its relationship with West and Zampella and seek compensation and other relief.

How much exactly has the project changed in the five years since it was announced? It's improved massively from what we thought we'd have to do. Back then, the design was a lot weaker, because at that point there wasn't much in the way of benchmarks in the online space. Of course what's happened since then is that we've had a lot of games that have come out that have moved the goal posts.
Probably the only thing that hasn't made it, that we didn't have enough time to do and one that in some respects that I'm quite happy to hold back for post-launch is the idea of turf war. Way back then we thought it would be a part of the game, but as it's transpired we've spent time on other parts of the game that we thought were a lot more important, and secondly it's a great thing to come out with later on.
By limiting it to 100 player servers, do you think that will protect APB from some of the issues that nearly every online game has at launch?
Yep. As a player I've lived through those, through server merges and downgrading and to things like clustered PvP. It always seems a negative, and it always fragments the player base. We won't have those issues and that's great. To be honest, I don't care what people say when they say it's not an MMO because it's just a hundred players, I can't name any MMO where you can compete closely with a hundred players – most of the time it's just a lagfest. So what we decided is let's cap it at that, and let's make it so that it's always great with 100 players, and never say we could have been 500 because the game would just crawl. And what fun is that, just to be able to say we can get 500 players together?
Crytek boss Cevat Yerli intimated that, rare though it is, on occasion elements which work on the PC version but aren’t able to scale down to the consoles, simply don’t go in.We quizzed him on how different it has been working within the limitations of the consoles versus the unlimited ceiling approach adopted toward the original Crysis on PC. “If it runs okay on PC, but not 360 and PS3 yet,” said Yerli, stressing that it’s a rarity, he went on “there’s only like one out of a hundred times that ever happens” but concluded that when that is the case “we don’t do it.”
However, he also makes it clear that the PC version scales upward considerably “there’s a narrow band of core experience,” he told us “which we pump through to all and then it’s the engine which scales up and down based on the platform. And when I say ‘up and down’ it’s more up on PC.”

Having had his Gears Of War 3 news spoilt by Microsoft, CliffyB had intended to announce Bulletstorm on Jimmy Fallon's chat show next Monday to keep his appearance 'exclusive.' Unfortunately, he has been beaten to the punch once more, so if you see him at GameStop tomorrow, try not to laugh too hard.
Ubisoft's online platform requires PC gamers to be connected to the internet while they play. But problems arise when authentication servers are unavailable or unresponsive. This was felt first with Assassin's Creed II and Silent Hunter V and then more recently with Settlers 7.The result has been fans unable to play games they've purchased, sometimes for days at a time.
Upcoming Ubisoft PC titles include Splinter Cell Conviction, Pure Football, R.U.S.E., I Am Alive TrackMania 2, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands and Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

Electronic Arts Inc. and Crytek GmbH today announced that Richard Morgan, award-winning author of the science-fiction bestsellers ‘Altered Carbon’ and ‘Broken Angels’, is writing the story for this holiday’s blockbuster action game, Crysis 2. Morgan is working with Crytek to bring his trademark visceral writing style to the project, which is his first entry into the video game medium. In Crysis 2, New York is under the attack of a unique and frightening alien species that combines deadly weaponry, exceptional sensory abilities and intelligent collaboration to present players with the most challenging opponents ever seen in a first person shooter. Surrounded by devastation, players must assess the situations they encounter, adapt to this urban jungle and use the weapons and powers given solely to them to save New York. Morgan enters this distressed world and brings it to life with gritty characters, a rich back-story and plot twists rarely found in video games.“Video games are one of the only things in my life I would qualify as a complete addiction,” said Richard Morgan. “The medium has every bit the potential for exciting and emotionally charged storytelling as literature and film, and I’m excited to explore this format on my first project in partnership with a world class developer like Crytek.”
“At Crytek, we pride ourselves on working with the most elite talent in the industry, and Richard is no exception,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “He has helped us take our ideas for Crysis 2 and transform them into a story that really engages the player in many new and exciting ways. His passion for his craft and for games is a perfect match for our team and we can’t wait for gamers to experience this collaboration.”
In Crysis 2, the aliens have returned with a full invasion force bent on nothing less than the total annihilation of mankind. In New York, terrifying alien invaders stalk the streets and a nightmare plague strikes down the city’s myriad inhabitants with brutal epidemic speed. The city’s systems are in chaos, its streets and skyline are smashed and in flaming ruin. Neither paramilitary law enforcement nor the might of the US military machine can stand against the invaders, and all who choose not to flee are dead men walking. Just to survive in this maelstrom of death will require technology beyond anything any modern soldier has ever seen. One man will inherit that means to survive. You alone must wield the combat technology of Nanosuit 2, and make the last stand to save humanity from destruction in the urban jungle that is New York City.
Built on Crytek’s new state-of-the art multiplatform game development system, CryENGINE 3, Crysis 2 will be available this holiday for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system, and PC.
Crytek also sent along a direct feed version of the GDC 2010 tech demo trailer:
This tallies with previous leaks, and general industry speculation. An official unveiling is due to occur on Jimmy Fallon's late night chat show next Monday.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces F.E.A.R. 3, a heart-pounding paranormal horror first person shooter unleashing intense combat, compelling narrative and co-op play that evolves the franchise. F.E.A.R. 3 is set to release on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC in fall 2010.Alma returns in F.E.A.R. 3 but this time her sons Point Man and Paxton Fettel introduce divergent co-op, giving players distinctly different abilities affecting their own play as well as the experience of their co-op partner. Gamers participate in single player or co-op modes as Point Man, a genetically enhanced super soldier originally introduced in F.E.A.R., or they can play cooperatively as his conniving brother Paxton Fettel, whose incredible telekinetic power has given him life beyond the grave. The game is developed by Day 1 Studios, developer of the original F.E.A.R. console games in collaboration with Monolith Studios.
“Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is evolving the F.E.A.R. brand with top horror, co-op and first person shooter combat in F.E.A.R. 3,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Monolith Productions has passed the torch to Day 1 Studios to create a quality, powerful game that stays true to the roots of the F.E.A.R. franchise but takes players to a heightened level of gameplay.”
To further ensure extreme terror in F.E.A.R. 3, legendary horror director John Carpenter (Halloween, Village of the Damned) and critically acclaimed horror comic and script writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) have provided consultation to enhance several of the game’s frightening aspects. Steve Niles co-wrote the game script with the development team and John Carpenter provided his expertise in crafting the in-game cinematics.
“After working closely with Monolith, Day 1 is honored to bring the next iteration of the F.E.A.R. franchise to gamers with key elements of the past games yet providing fresh combat and horror experiences in F.E.A.R. 3,” said Denny Thorley, Founder and President, Day 1 Studios. “Players can look forward to new features such as divergent co-op, an evolved cover system, and more scares in F.E.A.R. 3.”
Warner appears to have dropped the ridiculous .F.3.A.R. title we all mocked last month, though the logo they sent along does still use it.

Developer Epic Games is set to evolve the combat by introducing new Locust foes with tentacle-like appendages which are capable of extending to player cover spots. Meanwhile, the COG members of Delta Squad will be equipped with explosives that can travel beneath the ground to take out enemy cover positions. While the first two Gears games offered mobile cover in the form of objects like burnt out cars that could be pushed around, Gears Of War 3 will feature a heavy duty mech suit the COGs can utilise both for protection and to wreak havoc.
We were also informed that the game will be set during the summer and introduce a number of new environments to the series, including underwater locations. The end of the last title saw the COGs sink mankind’s last city, Jacinto, and flood the Hollow in order to take out the Locust Horde beneath the surface.
Check back Monday evening to see if they're right.
