The other River Cafe The River Cafe in London may be the more famous of the two but Calgary's River Cafe is a special destination, one that will provide visitors with a memorable experience they will not soon forget. The setting is near idyllic, located on a small island on the Bow River, which skirts the edge of downtown Calgary. It is only a ten minute walk from downtown yet one could easily forget you are in the middle of thriving city of just over a million people. The interior resembles an upscale fishing lodge, complete with a beautiful stone fireplace that will quickly take the chill off a Calgary winter's eve. In the summer months the outdoor patio is beautiful as well, overlooking a river inlet with the city backdrop looming behind. The food is what keeps them coming back to the River Cafe however, year after award winning year. It focuses on local, often organic ingredients, deftly prepared and presented. I am among a large contingent of foodies that believe the River Cafe is the best restaurant in the city, and has been for some time. The wine list is fairly large but well thought out and very reasonably priced by local standards. As someone who sells and writes about wine for a living I have been afforded the luxury of dining in fine restaurants around the globe, and I wouldn't hesitate to include the River Cafe among my favorites. I have dinned at the River Cafe in London, it was very good but way overpriced. I'll take the Calgary example any day.
