Good Old Games Opens For Business
Good old games that work flawlessly on XP and Vista, all under $10, all 100% DRM-free - that's GOG.com, and the site's now open for business to anyone who wants to experience the good old days, again:

GOG.com, or Good Old Games, the digital distribution site with DRM-free PC classics, today opened its doors to the public as it moved into its Open Beta phase after a highly successful Early Access Beta that saw tens of thousands of gamers satisfy their deepest desires… for classic PC games, you sicko! Additionally, GOG.com announced that two new companies have taken up arms in the battle to bring classic PC games at low prices to the masses. The award-winning worldwide publisher, Strategy First, is bringing hit titles Sacred Gold, Jagged Alliance, Disciples Gold and more to GOG.com, while a deal with Pluto 13 means that classic-games fans will have the opportunity to play Piranha Bytes' acclaimed RPG, Gothic.

With Strategy First and Pluto 13 joining Codemasters and Interplay, the GOG.com Open Beta will expand in the coming weeks to offer more than 50 games from the 90s and 2000s, all optimized to work on modern PCs and packed with bonus content. Also, the games are inexpensive, leading to a minimal impact on international credit markets; GOG.com is doing its part to crush the current economic recession.

Strategy First games will begin appearing in the GOG.com games catalogue with the release of Disciples: Sacred Lands Gold Edition on October 28, the same day that will see the launch of Piranha Bytes’ Gothic. More titles, as well as announcements of additional publishers, will follow in the coming weeks. Go to GOG.com and dive right into the world of classic PC gaming.

Other notable catalogue items: Fallout 1 & 2, Messiah, Sacrifice, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Freespace 1 & 2, Operaiton Flashpoint, Earthworm Jim 1 & 2, MDK 2.

WAR: RvR Experience Doubled
Sick of the WAR grind? Go do some RvR for double XP rewards:

With the addition of the new region-wide and RvR-wide chat channels we have seen a marked increase in Open RvR participation. In order to encourage this trend even further, we have made an additional adjustment to the experience awarded for killing enemy players in an Open RvR area. Previously we increased this amount by 50%. As of today, that bonus has been raised to 100%. With this change players killed in Open RvR will now be worth double the experience than those killed in scenarios!

Fallout 3: Graphically Inferior On Playstation 3
- 20 Comments
Playstation 3 Magazine claims that Fallout 3 is at its worst on their favourite home console:

Our exclusive Fallout 3 PS3 review (from PSM3#107) has leaked onto the Internet and, as expected, a single sentence has been dragged out, beaten and interrogated under a spotlight. This one; "The PS3 version compares poorly to its Xbox and PC counterparts." Which, in the parlance of the Internet, obviously means; "THE PS3 VERSION SUCKS! XBOX WINS! ANOTHER CRAPPY PORT!" But that isn't the case. The PS3 version just looks SLIGHTLY WORSE than the other versions.

The PC version of Fallout 3 is gorgeous. The colours are vivid, the draw distance is endless, the textures are high-res and the lighting effects are beautifully subtle, especially when you're gazing over the Capital Wasteland at sunset. It's the best-looking of the three.

The Xbox 360 version's textures are noticeably rougher than on PC, and objects in the distance aren't quite as clear. It does, however, boast an impressively solid frame rate. The game is, otherwise, identical.

NOW, the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox, but things in the distance are slightly jaggier/rougher, the textures seem 'muddier' up-close and the frame rate is choppier, especially during the last few story missions (which may be the same on Xbox, but we've not seen the equivalent scenes to comment). We won't spoil anything, but the set-pieces here are MASSIVE, and the engine quivers under the weight of what's happening.

So, really, the difference between the Xbox and PS3 versions won't hamper your enjoyment of the game in ANY WAY. High-res textures or not, it's still the same huge, epic, absorbing, brilliant adventure.

Red Alert 3: Hollywood Talent Cheaper Than CG Cutscenes
- 5 Comments
Hiring a boat load of celebrities is cheaper than creating computer generated, StarCraft-esque cutscenes, says EA, but how do they go about choosing the actual stars?

"The casting for this game and for our previous game, C&C3;, was kind of a collaborative effort between certain members of the development team as well as PR and marketing." says Ajami -- who explains that there was a "four-tiered filter" in place when evaluating whether or not actors fit the game.

"One, of course, is that we're always after big-name Hollywood stars. And you see that a lot in our game," says Ajami. "We also look for people who kind of have geek cred that satisfies certain members of our audience." Or who don't mind being in something as offbeat, objectively, as Red Alert 3.

"But George Takei is a perfect example of that," says Ajami. "He's in Heroes, and just before that, Star Trek."

"We also look for actors who just kind of bring a smile to your face, who might not have starred in a lot of big name movies. We think people like Peter Stormare kind of fit that role."

Actors like Stormare, says Ajami, might not have top-of-your-head name recognition -- "but you'd certainly recognize the face and point to the VW commercials or his work on Armageddon as the cosmonaut there."

"And the last filter, of course is, this being a video game, and a C&C; game, and with a 97 percent male audience, you look to have a couple of hot females in the game," he adds. "We have that with Jenny McCarthy and a lot of our co-commanders as well."

But all the familiar faces beg the question of budget -- does the slate of actors affect revenue projections?

"Yeah," says Ajami. "Needless to say... if you take a movie, for example, and you cast somebody big, then your expectations of that movie is going to be higher. While it's to a lesser extent, that does apply to games as well."

Fling David Hasselhoff's rag doll body in Movie Studio, a new Pain downloadable expansion pack:

When I was first approached about PAIN, I really didn’t know what to think. I mean, it’s great to think that someone would want to put me in a game, but THIS game is all about flinging people into walls, smashing them into cars, and spanking monkeys. While I wholeheartedly approve of the monkey spanking, I wasn’t too sure about the rest of the game. When I finally got my hands on PAIN though, everything changed, and I “got it”. If anybody can understand silly fun, it’s me.

I am a man of many emotions so when you throw me around the Movie Studio, I need to express myself. What better way than in song! So to commemorate my invasion onto the PS3, I made a cover song of Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” exclusively for PAIN. I’m really happy with the way the track turned out. We definitely brought something new to such a classic, well-known tune, and when you hear it, you’re going to like it. Sure, you know David Hasselhoff, but this song is like nothing I’ve done before.

Leveling in Warhammer is starting to get a little easier. It would be nice if they would take the caps off of the kill collectors though. That, or post the max number of kills you can collect before they stop accepting them. Then, switch the species of mob that they want you to collect once you're finished. With the kill collectors you can -almost- get a halfway decent grind group going...

Today's question:

What level is your Warhammer character?

Assuming you still play (ahem).

Molyneux Gets All Emo About Fable 2 Reviews
- 12 Comments
Sir Peter got all choked up over how well Fable 2 was received by the gaming press:
"I found myself becoming incredibly emotional as I read peoples reviews and saw how differently the reviewers were reacting to Fable 2. Some reviewers played good, others evil some enjoyed the combat more than the story. Some ended up rich and others poor and it's the sheer variety in how reviewers have played the game which has struck us most."

"I'd like to say a personal thank you to every reviewer out there for their patience and belief." Group hug!

He must especially love the Euro press who -- for the most part -- have given it about 10% higher scores.

To launch the partnership, Atari, Inc. will initially release several of cdv USA's key titles, including the upcoming action-RPG Sacred 2: Fallen Angel (Games For Windows, Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system), I Heart Geeks! and My Little Baby (Nintendo DS). BioShock 2 Most Wanted
- 11 Comments
IGN sounded off a big-ass list of stuff they would like to see in BioShock 2. Here's a taste:
The first and most immediate question that came to mind was exactly when and where the sequel should be set. I wanted to know whether our editors thought the game should be set a few years after and would be a return to Rapture, if it should be set in a new location, or if the sequel should actually be a prequel. In case you don't know, the original game took place in 1960, and was set entirely within Rapture's underwater walls. Overwhelmingly, the majority of our editors wanted to see a prequel to the original BioShock, with many of them wanting to experience the exact moment that chaos breaks out. Being in the midst of this insanity, with a city completely falling apart and being destroyed around you could be one of the most compelling stories ever created, especially with the denizens of Rapture trying to do everything they could to survive.
Me? All I want is a Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network and I'll be golden.

Fallout 3 DLC Likely To Include Actual Content
- 5 Comments
Remember Oblivion's $1.99 horsie armor pack that drew so much criticism? Well, good news frugal gamers, Fallout 3's DLC packs are going to be jam packed with um, actual content according to this interview at GameBanshee with Bethesda Designer Gavin Carter:
GB: You ended up releasing a total of nine pieces of downloadable content for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Are you planning to release a similar number for Fallout 3? Can we expect to see DLC that adds entirely new quest lines and environments like we saw in Knights of the Nine, or will you be shooting for smaller cosmetic additions similar to what you gave us in Spell Tomes?

Gavin: For Fallout 3 DLC, we’d like to go the Knights of the Nine route. That is to say, we want to provide larger packages of content with a wider variety of new content, such as quests and gameplay areas. I can’t commit to any particular number right now. We’ll talk more about them as time goes on.

E3 2009 Details
Promising to be bigger and better than ever:

The 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will take place from June 2-4, 2009, at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC), the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today. The expanded E3 will welcome all qualified computer and video game industry audiences, including international and U.S.-based media, analysts, retailers, developers and business partners to preview the latest in interactive entertainment and technology.

“Video games are the fastest growing and most compelling sector of the entertainment industry. And, this upgraded event will reflect the growth, innovation and excitement of our industry,” said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA, which represents US computer and video game publishers and organizes the annual event. “The breadth, scope and quality of the changes made to the show will make E3 the must-attend event of the year.”

“The E3 Expo will be the pre-eminent North American gaming show next year. The new, larger event is better for industry leaders and for serious gamers,” commented John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts.

After conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, ESA officials stated changes were necessary to better meet the needs of both exhibitors and attendees— these changes include increased booth sizes, increased qualified audiences, and an intensified focus on reinforcing the high-octane growth, innovation, and captivating entertainment that are driving the computer and video game industry.

'The video game business will be twice as big in 2009 as it was in 2006 when we had the last real E3 Expo - so get ready for some fireworks!' said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America. 'The changes made will ensure that the 2009 E3 Expo conveys the best of what makes us proud as entertainment leaders.'

Deus Ex was "Kind of Slow"
In an interview to be published tomorrow in Edge Magazine, Deus Ex 3 lead designer Jean-Francois Dugas says the original Deus Ex was a bit pokey:

In an interview with Edge magazine, published tomorrow, Dugas says the original Deus Ex was “kind of slow”. He added, “There weren’t enough exciting, memorable moments. It was aimed more towards a simulation rather than a game experience.”

But he said developer Eidos Montreal would not attempt to dumb down the much-loved RPG-shooter franchise. “At this point we don’t know exactly which platforms we’re going to be out on. The PC, we’ll be there for sure. But for us, console-isation isn’t about dumbing down features. If we’re to go console we will want to keep the complexity alive. We want the menu interface and controller to feel simple without risking any of their potential"

    Obama Girl Backs Ackerman
Obama Girl, an "Internet sensation," has switched sides to support Howard T. Ackerman in the forthcoming election:

He may not be driving the "Straight Talk Express" or promising to deliver the "Change We Need," but Howard T. Ackerman and his controversial "Screw 'Em All" campaign has begun to pick up momentum as the candidate's blinding confidence in his own decision-making abilities and his indifference to the opinions of others is clearly winning over the American public.

"I don't need any polls, town halls or some fancy schmancy debate with Kronkite-wannabes to tell me what Americans want," said Ackerman at a recent rally in Playa Vista, California. "A vote for me is a vote for the things every American lives for: capitalism, freedom and apple pie. Vote for me if you want to live."

One recent endorser of Ackerman's campaign is the infamous YouTube sensation, the "Obama Girl," who is debuting a new Ackerman tribute video today.
