Tiberium Cancelled!
A spiritual successor to Renegade, Tiberium, has been cancelled because of quality issues, and some of its team is being laid off. This unfortunately is the second C&C; FPS (the other one being Renegade 2) never to see the light of day.

Mailbag On Saturdays
Our former staff member Sonic Alpha was brought back to Planet C&C; by force to revive the Mailbag feature. We have a new topic for you to discuss, so start sending us some mail!

Weekly Features Reminder:

GameTrailers.com continues to bring new videos from Red Alert 3. This time, they have three new ones: a cinematic titled "America Enters The War" and two videos of the co-op mode (V4 Rocket's Co-Op and Naval Co-Op).

As if that wasn't enough, tomorrow they're planning to unleash the new Hell March on GameTrailers TV.

Thanks to Inferno Flame ZERO for the heads up!

Nuke-Free Superweapon Trailer  [ 30 Comments ]
20:14 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Category: Red Alert 3
(Thanks, Inferno Flame ZERO) GameTrailers have a new video up showing off the superpowers in Red Alert 3. All of the powers except for the last three are "Generals' Points" powers, so you can see there's quite a lot of damage to be wrought simply by earning in-game "XP" from kills. I actually rather enjoyed the little FMV clip at the beginning of this video which explains why there are no nukes -- because the Soviet time-travellers have assassinated Einstein!

Of course this doesn't seem to have prevented people from figuring out prism spectrum weapons, Mirage stealth technology, or Gap generator tech... As for the actual, buildable, superweapons in play, for the record, the Soviets get the Iron Curtain (invulnerability ray), the Japanese get the Psionic Decimator (big explosion), and the Allies get the Proton Collider (massive infinite-range artillery).

Wait a minute... Proton Collider? As in, nucleus-of-an-atom-Proton? Hmmm... Something in E=mc2 doesn't quite add up here...

GameSpy's Preview of Red Alert 3  [ Comment ]

GameSpy has posted its share of comments on the co-op campaign in Red Alert 3. Just like the recent preview by IGN, this one also includes two videos. I've embedded one of them below:

Real-Life Sea/Sky-Wing  [ 1 Comment ]
12:06 PST | Ghorkov | Print News | Category: Real Life C&C;
The easy-spending folks at DARPA (better known as the (funders of the) creators of the Internet) have given us another case of life-imitating-art.

Presenting the real-life Red Alert 3 Sea-Wing/Sky-Wing!

...okay, so it's just a call for a prototype implementation, but I'm sure those sneaky Japanese Shinobis are busy gathering precious intelligence on this weapon for use in their home country.

Just in case you weren't convinced, compare the unit video from the RA3 factions page with the promotional video for the real thing. All we need now are mind-controlled squid and a megalomaniacal Joe Kucan.

(Another C&C-like thing to notice is the Orca-esque central fan at 03:15)

The Cold War Crisis team has released patch v492 which fixes the performance problems when viewing the US buildings. Giant Bomb Previews RA3  [ 1 Comment ]
16:56 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Category: Red Alert 3
(Thanks, Zonekill9) General gaming news website Giant Bomb have put up a new video today showing their man Jeff going through an RA3 campaign mission in co-op mode with Amer Ajami and Greg Kasavin. Unfortunately, the video's a little squint-o-visionish, and their streaming video player doesn't allow skipping ahead, so you'll have to wait (or fast forward very slowly) through a few minutes of general RA3 stuff and cutscenes we've seen in previous trailers, but once the mission starts it's a decent intro to the co-op gameplay.

There are some interesting RA3 features revealed; for example, Allied players can share tech level upgrades if their bases are close enough together. AI co-op partners have also been tuned so that they shouldn't need your help in campaign missions, but also won't merely win missions on their own -- Greg describes them as being "there if you need 'em".

This week's mailbag is up, and ready to view.

For next weeks topic, I've pulled out the paradox machine so I can pose this question: -

"You and a team consisting of 3 Tanyas (one from each Red Alert), have been given a mission to take down Massivesoft. Unfortunately the only equipment you have is a trusty Swiss army knife, a broken shoe lace, and an expired credit card. How do you do it?"

As always responses should be sent to mailbag@planetcnc.gamespy.com, and the mailbag will return next Saturday.

"The Red Alert" Renders  [ Comment ]
22:15 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Category: Red Alert 3 Mods
The somewhat confusingly named upcoming RA3 mod "The Red Alert", which aims to bring the original RA1 into the RA3 engine, has a pack of new unit and structure renders for you to digest today. The Allied Artillery, Naval Yard, and Turret are present as well as the Soviet MiG and Sub Pen, and both sides' basic Power Plant. Here's the MiG and Arty:

Hit up the TRA homepage for the rest, as well as their previous renders.

Empire of the Rising Sun Trailer  [ 7 Comments ]
22:08 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Category: Red Alert 3
(Thanks, Inferno Flame ZERO) EA has put up a couple of new movies relating to the Empire of the Rising Sun (henceforth to be known as simply Japan). First up is a story trailer (40 MB) explaining a little of their back story, and second up is a very neat video (also 40 MB) of George Takei talking about his work on RA3 -- you should recall that Captain Sulu will be playing the part of the Japanese Emperor in RA3.

Stream them or download them from EA for a good three minutes' worth of the Sons of Nippon in RA3.

C&C3; Deluxe Edition Contests  [ Comment ]
21:58 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Category: Contests - C&C3; - Kane's Wrath
As you might have guessed, our own Nodification Contest is actually but one of several running in the community right now. It's part of a larger scheme by EA to pimp the new Deluxe Edition of C&C3;, which includes both C&C3; and Kane's Wrath in a festive new packaging. All of the fansites running the contests have the exact same prizes on offer -- for the exact same placings, too -- but each contest differs in terms of what you've got to do to get the goods. Here's what the other fansites are running:
  • CNC NZ is running a C&C; cast trivia contest; answer correctly for a chance to win
  • C&C; Files wants to know why you haven't bought C&C3; yet (or why you want another copy); tell them for a chance to win
  • GameReplays wants people to send them their best C&C; poetry -- yes, poetry. There are special poetic guidelines to follow, as well.
  • C&C; Labs, in a reversal of normality, want you to write a tough C&C; trivia question -- the harder the better!
  • Project Perfect Mod is running a voxel/HVA contest -- build a voxel version of a C&C3;/KW unit or piece of concept art!
  • Finally, C&C; Den is running a dead-simple lottery: just e-mail Lion for a chance to win
There are some German and Russian fansites running contests as well; see the full listing over at EA's site, but really, why are you bothering? Clearly the only one you should even think about entering is our own Photo editing/drawing Nodification contest, complete with laughably bad Nod imitation mission briefing video.

All of these contests, including ours, end on the 15/16th (see each website for particulars), so if you want to get your hands on a free copy of the C&C3; Deluxe Edition -- as well as T-shirts, coffee mugs, and potentially even a signed photo of Kane -- then get your rear in gear, Commander!

Battlecast Primetime 13  [ 1 Comment ]

(Thanks, Inferno Flame ZERO) After a long summer hiatus, the C&C; TV "Battlecast Primetime" series is back with Episode 13, available for your downloading pleasure in either SD (276 MB) or HD (just under 1 GB) forms.

Episode 13 features Chris Corry showing off the RA3 Co-op multiplayer system, more RA3 cast videos, as well as buckets of footage from the floor of the Leipzig games show.

Frank's October Update  [ Comment ]
21:43 PST | HeXetic | Print News | Category: Frank Klepacki
Legendary C&C; composer Frank Klepacki has sent out his October update, and here's his news:
  • Frank is playing LIVE in the Netherlands for the "Games In Concert" event; if you're Dutch you will want to check out the formal announcement. Frank will be performing some RA3 and UaW tracks, including the new Hell March 3. He'll be accompanied by the Metropole Orchestra, who'll be responsible for the orchestral sections of the UaW main theme and other tracks.
  • Frank's band, The Bitters, have a new album out called "Grudgement Day"; it'll be available on Frank's webstore shortly.
  • Frank wants all of us to remember that hey, the Red Alert 3 Premier Edition will include a separate soundtrack CD, which of course will contain his new Hell March 3 track. So be sure to shell out the extra buckazoids if you want in on soundtrack city.
  • Finally, if you missed it yesterday, Music 4 Games has an extensive article on the RA3 soundtrack recording sessions with the Skywalker Ranch orchestra
This is all good and well, but I think what we all really want to know is: When is Hell March 3 going to be on Frank's Jukebox? Surely we won't have to wait out the rest of the month before getting to hear Red Alert's new anthem?

IGN's Preview of Red Alert 3  [ Comment ]
15:12 PST | Dario | Print News | Category: Red Alert 3
IGN has posted a new preview of Red Alert 3, focusing on its co-op campaign. If you recall, all single-player missions were designed to be played with a teammate (computer or human). The preview also features two in-game videos. Here's a snippet:
There's an interesting build mechanic in co-op. While you can't directly control the buildings and units of your teammate, you can build structures in his base and vice versa. This is very handy, particularly in the second mission that we played. In a Soviet mission, we started out with Greg in command of a land base and myself in command of a base at sea. He churned out tanks and infantry to defend against a large ground attack, while I churned out speedboats to battle oncoming Allied dolphins (yes, dolphins) and aircraft carriers. To help me out, Greg dropped a Tesla coil in my base, and I added another, so any dolphins that got too close got vaporized.
