  Sticky: NWN2/NWN1 Publication Update  [ Comment ]
Print News
To help streamline the release of files, both NWN files and NWN2 files will be released at the same time under the news title "New Community Content!" which used to be only for NWN1 files. You can see the latest update below. This will save me a lot of time and ensure that files get released in the quickest possible manner since it's automated. I'm going to leave this sticked for those that are used to looking for the NWN2 specific news item.

Sticky: NWN 1.69 Beta Patch Released!  [ Comment ]
Print News
As promised the 1.69 patch is now in beta and available for download. This patch is to allow the community to test it out prior to it's final release. While this will be the last patch for NWN, it must definitely be a gaming record for support by a developer. You can get the full download details and contents here.

Obsidian NWN2 Community Update - Monty Hired!  [ Comment ]
Print News | Category: NWN2 - Official News
Obsidian Community Coordinator, Rob McGinnis, has updated the NWN2 Blog with recent events including the great news that Rogue Dao Studios', Monty Markland, has been hired by Obsidian! Huge congratulations on going pro. Here's Monty response on getting hired and reassuring everyone that the work on the Purgatoria mods will continue.
Obsidian Entertainment is awesome.

I started working here on Monday. The past five days have been the coolest experience I've ever had. For everyone out there thinking, "It must be rad to work in the game business." I can tell you that, yes indeed, it is rad.

"Who are you and why do we care?"

Well, I've been the public face of the Planescape Trilogy project for the past 15 months. I felt like it was important to let everybody know that my arrival at Obsidian doesn't threaten the completion of Purgatorio or the rest of the Trilogy at all. There are 23 incredibly talented ladies and gentleman currently working on Purgatorio, folks such as: Kevin Chow, Scott Douglas, Johnny Taylor, Courtney Keene, Ryan Placchetti, Daniel Haas, Andrej Bartulovic, Heather Kirk, Jason Ng, Michael Cipriano, Will Sprinkel, Bruce Hayles, Matthew Roeder, Sampo Narhi, Gabor Valasek, Robert Fletcher, Atte Laitenen, Marko Radojkovic, Ryan Farnsworth, Andres Cruz, Johnny Ree, and Kris Hammes. I also continue to work on the project in my own time.

If anything, I think my working at Obsidian will make the Trilogy and the community stronger.

Rogue Dao Studios has now proven itself to be a pipeline into paid game industry jobs. This will make recruiting new talent from outside the NWN2 community an easier task. More talent working on the Planescape Trilogy will mean a better gaming experience for everyone. New talent joining the NWN2 community will be a win for everybody involved.

I've been bullish about NWN2 since its release. I'm bullish about NWN2 now. I'm bullish on the Toolset. I'm bullish about Mysteries of Westgate. I think Mask of the Betrayer demonstrated the true potential of Neverwinter Nights 2 and I think even more exciting things will be revealed in the future.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
Also in the blog update is a spotlight on Harp & Chrysanthemum, a single player 4th level character module by Maerdui, Weapon Packs by MWMDragon, Kaycei's Hair models, and the Deepsnow Prefab by SGK73. Rob then wraps it up with some details on their plans to make the upcoming patches released faster and more transparent starting with 1.12 patch including what you can look forward to.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Community Update Dec. 7
But anyway, I do have a question. Why increase the player limit to 120 for dedicated servers? Unless there are going to be some major changes to performance, I don't think having anywhere near that number would really be practical for most servers. I appreciate the attention to MP mind you, but I'd just have to see you guys spending your valuable time and money changing something that wouldn't be of too much use right now (maybe at a point in the future however).
It has been requested by a few PW Admins.... also, poor PW performance is not as set in stone as you may think. Hence the request.

Please, address this one.
GrinningFool is on the right track with that issue.

Rogue Dao has not been assimilated... Just Monty. Rogue Dao will continue to operate and work on their Purgatorio mod.

Tile glitch (report posted earlier):

The offending road is next to it - you can see the dissappearing ship in the background.
Could you send a copy of your module to nwbugs@bioware.com ? It will make it much easier for Brian to identify exactly which tiles are having the problem.

If your module is quite large, could you place the starting location next to the tile error.

Another way to get more information on the tile models involved IIRC is to turn on "DebugMode 1" from the console, and press the 'x' button while hovering the mouse over the tiles in question. The tile info should appear in the text window.

NWN2 Model Contest Spotlight  [ Comment ]
Print News | Category: NWN2 - Spotlight
Each day we will feature a couple of the models submitted for the Obsidian Model Contest so the authors get good coverage. The rules can be found here and the full list of the models submitted for the contest can be found here. Here are today's feature modules.
  • Glacier's Edge by MisterBritish.
Magical/Elemental longsword model, for modelling contest. Override only.

Glacier's Edge: The origins of this blade are unkown, though it's powerful enchantments suggest it originated somewhere in the Frozen North, or perhaps another plane entirely. Anyone struck with the blade feels not only biting cold but also the crushing force of millenia-old ice as it carves through the world.

  • Bastard Sword by Argyl
It's my first contribution. As I'm not an artist, the texture is quite basic and simple. This model works with all the parts of the Obsidian's bastard sword, even if some combinations aren't pretty nice/fine.

  • Kalaloth Moor Hammer by Qkrch.
Kalaloth is not only a model, it's the base for a perfect weapon. Using it as a war hammer and inspired in an old moor mace, this weapon could be your favourite war friend. The weapon includes an UI screen that steals the enemies' soul and when it's full, it begins to make strange damage effects and hurt the enemies as you never saw before.

Good luck to everyone that participated.

    ALL GOOD THINGS...
    Hey Everyone,

So this will be my last post as the official Neverwinter Community Manger. I just wanted to say on behalf of Brandon, Matt and the Maverick team it's been a pleasure working with the D&D and Neverwinter community for the last few years. It's definitely been a highlight of my gaming career, and the community leaders , developers and everyone that's been part of the Neverwinter team with whom I've interacted have all been solidly top notch people with whom I have great memories. As to what the future holds at this time I cant say, I'm certain there will be a time where the "D&D bug" strikes again and I'm sure I'll be speaking with many of you again in the future. The RPG universe is like a big (or small) family so until the next time and the next project, it's been a great ride.

    Thanks everyone!

    So this is the end...
The doomsaying in the forums is getting a bit ridiculous.

The patch is on the way.

    Sneak Peek: 1.11 Patch Notes
Here is a quick look at some of the fixes and features in Patch 1.11. Happy reading.

Neverwinter Nights 2 - Version 1.11 Patch Notes
    October 30th, 2007

    • The “Enable Buy/Sell Confirmation” option will now properly retain its state when you exit the game.

    • The conversation with Shelvedar will no longer drop if the player is female.

    Sneak Peek: 1.11 Patch Notes
Right now, we expect to release the patch on Monday. It's too close to the weekend now and we don't like to release right before a weekend.

    Sneak Peek: 1.11 Patch Notes
    Yes.

Innate AC will no longer duplicate natural AC

    Sneak Peek: 1.11 Patch Notes
More info will be in today's blog.

Where have all the dev comments gone?
You'd think, if it's that cool, it would be easier to find. Several searches bring up zilch.
Sometimes it's easier to use google...

Using mIRC or another IRC chat client:

    IRC Server: irc.neverwinterconnections.com
    Public Channel: NWN2CR

There is also a web page client Grinning Fool made (I think), but I am not sure what the address is for it.

    Feedback, players perspective only;
Where is mention of Holy Steeds (aurenthil) along with Nightmares? Will Paladins get a HolySteed?
There's a new feat for Paladins for "Summon Mount" however the NWScript for it has not been added yet. Lots of horse specific stuff is still being ripped out of WCoC and has to be cleaned up for 1.69 release.

You might also need to rebuild your paladin to get the feat available. And we need to fix up the whole 24h unsummon issue with the mount. =)

Will Bioware be updating the Premium Modules (specifically PotSC and WCoC) to 1.69 once the patch is finalized?
Unfortunately, like PotSC, no, I've renamed and renumbered a lot of the ID and WCoC content to fit them in the BioWare reserved Safe 2DA lines, or renamed the resource itself to conform to certain naming standards (ife_dla_someicon.tga to ife_x3_someicon.tga). As well as lots of TLK changes since we aren't using the custom module specific TLK and needing to add the 16777216 to the value.

1.69.8100 Beta Patch Now Available (Discuss).
I guess I should have verified with others before I sent this bug report.

In the Barrows Interior tileset, the group "Final Area 7X7" seems to be missing textures on the stepping stones leading out to the middle.
Not a bug, it's there as helpers to assist in placing the placeable rock platforms. You have to look at the properties for the tile group and switch the animation state so those helper tiles will disappear.

The rock platforms themselves animate coming up from the ground, so you'll also need to spawn an invisible blocker placeable to prevent players from walking onto the invisible bridge until the time is right.

1.69.8100 Beta Patch Now Available (Discuss).
Hmm... The seventeen new music tracks aren't showing up. (I already had the Wyvern Crown music in my folder, incidentally, if that has anything to do with it.) Maybe something to do with ambientmusic.2da?
Ooo I knew I forgot something...

The 1.69 Patch Thread part -sweet- 16
So does this mean we should uninstall the alpha files as well?

I've been meaning to ask how exactly to accomplish that for a while now.
You don't have to, but you can remove the bw_*.HAKs from your module. If you need the space, you can delete them and the /nwn/updater/bw_* folders.

However, I'd probably still continue using it to debug and let others test out any content fixes until the final patch is released.

    1.69.8100 Beta Patch Now Available.
The first 1.69 beta patch is now available for download.

This beta patch currently only supports the English version of Neverwinter Nights running under Windows for users that have both expansion packs installed (SoU and HotU).

The 1.69 beta patch contains a couple of Vista specific changes, including:
    - A fix for videos not playing properly under Windows Vista.
    - Prompting Vista users to elevate privileges when running Neverwinter Nights.

The files can be found here:

    Revert Patch Here:

Please grab both files and place them in your Neverwinter Nights install directory (where nwmain.exe resides).
Then run the game updater to update to the beta patch (nwupdate.exe). The updater will need to update itself before it can correctly install/uninstall the beta patch.
To revert back to 1.68 just run the updater again (if you rembered to grab both files).

The patch page hasn't been updated yet. It will probably be next week before the web monkeys get around to updating the patch page.

You can report any bugs you find to nwbugs@bioware.com, nwexploits@bioware.com or nwtoolsetbugs@bioware.com (depending on whether they are game bugs, game exploits, or toolset bugs).

    Note:
If you update to the 1.69.8100 beta build, you wont be able to play with other people in multiplayer games unless they also update to the same version.

If you been assisting with the 1.69 alpha testing with Brian Chung, you will need to revert to the 1.68 dialog.tlk file before applying the beta patch, otherwise the beta patch will fail with an error about the dialog.tlk file contents being incorrect.

One of the big differences between this patch and previous patches is the huge amount of new content that we included from our Premium Modules program. We definitely would like to hear back about any bugs that can be found with the new content ( i.e. creatures, placeables, Purple Dragon Knight prestige class ). I hope all you builders out there will try out the beta patch and report any issues you find.

Wow. What's up with you guys?

    Craig.

1.69.8100 Beta Patch Now Available (Discuss).
Possible problem with the new FindSubstring() not being backwards-compatible:

In an existing module, an existing script with a FindSubstring() call compiled under 1.68 will fail with an underflow error unless recompiled in 1.69.

Before I submit this to nwbugs, can anyone reproduce it?

Meanwhile, I will investigate if it depends on the string parameters in any way.

OldMansBeard would you be able to submit a small test module that demonstrates the problem to nwbugs@bioware.com ? I'll take a look at the problem right away.

Would someone be able to put together a test module for me that demonstrates this crash?

Hopefully I can fix the issue before the 1.69 final patch is released. The first 1.69 beta patch is now available, so we're running low on time (see the sticky in the General discussion forum).

1.69.8100 Beta Patch Now Available (Discuss).
Yes!!, I just download it and started a new HoTU game. I noticed that the tridents in Argali's Arms are just named tridents, they have the enhancement when you examine, and she doesn't have an infinite stack of tridents unlike the other weapons.
Looks like I'll have to create some new item templates for the new tridents. Could you send a email into nwbugs@bioware.com describing exactly where in the module you are seeing the problem (i.e. chapter, area, store, etc). That would help me find/fix the issue much faster.

The 1.69 Patch Thread part -sweet- 16
Is there any information on upcomming bug fixes yet? Or will that be happening later on in the beta version?
We've posted our first 1.69 beta patch.

Let me know if you experience any problems at all.

You can report any bugs you find to nwbugs@bioware.com, nwexploits@bioware.com or nwtoolsetbugs@bioware.com (depending on whether they are game bugs, game exploits, or toolset bugs).

The 1.69 Patch Thread part -sweet- 16
We've posted our first 1.69 beta patch.

Is it best to revert to the 1.68 dialog.tlk before patching? Or doesn't it really matter?
Yes, if you been assisting with the alpha testing with Brian Chung, you will need to revert to the 1.68 dialog.tlk file first, otherwise applying the beta patch will fail with an error about that file.

I've also created the following sticky to discuss the beta patch.

    Hope that helps,
    Craig.

The 1.69 Patch Thread part -sweet- 16
Any ideas when we can expect a linux version of the patch? I'd like to convert 2 of our servers to it and enlist our players to help playtest, given the issues encountered after the 1.67 patch from insufficient playtest. That's over 800 potential playtesters, but they can't help until we get a linux version. So, pretty please, can we have one soon?

Thanks for all the hard work!

    Funky
The linux/Mac ports of the 1.69 patch haven't been started yet. I'm hoping to start them this week (Owen is swamped with other work, so I get to do the updates this time). No ETA yet at the moment, but I don't expect them to be done this week.

    Craig.

The 1.69 Patch Thread part -sweet- 16
    Craig,

Do you know if the Mac port will include Universal Binary for Intel-based Macs?

    Thanks,
    Joe
A Universal Binary will not be included initially. Owen still wants to make a universal Binary, but he may have to do it on his own time, so it will probably come later.
No ETA on when that might happen yet.

The 1.69 Patch Thread part -sweet- 16
Craig, just confirming that you and Brenon made the Holy Avenger property set at a static caster level, but left the Holy Sword Spell dynamic at the Paladin's caster level?
Yep. Someone already complained in the 1.69 beta patch sticky that we nerfed it.

1.69.8100 Beta Patch Now Available (Discuss).
Possible problem with the revert patch:

It seems to take me to a version called 1.68.8100 from which it is not possible to update again.

Using the 1.68 critical rebuild gets me back to 1.68.8099, so I can move on.

    It's reproducible.

    OMB
Will take a look into that too.

    On its way.

Oddly enough, there is a clue in there to the revert patch problem too. In the 1.68.8100 "version" that the revert patch leaves you in, FindSubstring is still broken. So it looks as if it's not reverting the run-time completely back to .8099 and it really is leaving you in .8100 limbo.

    OMB
Thanks for sending that in. Already verified that my fix for FindSubString() works with your test module. So in the next beta this should be fixed.

    1.69 Beta patch now available.
Just a heads up that we now have a 1.69 Beta patch available for download.

Due to the addition of huge amount of new content from both Infinite Dungeons and WCoC, there is a significant possibility that there may some content conflicts with CEP.

I would hope that some of the CEP guys/gals would take the time to take a look at the 1.69 Beta patch to see how much pain it might cause.

Dragonlance 'Dragons of Autumn Twilight' Interview  [ 1 Comment ]
Print News | Category: NWN - NWN2 - Site Features
We have a Dragonlance "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" interview with Co-Executive producer Cindi Rice and Paramount Pictures Product Manager, Chris Dreyer. Based upon the novel "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, this straight to DVD movie has the voice talent of Lucy Lawless as Goldmoon, Kiefer Sutherland as Raistlin, Fred Tatasciore (Flint), Michelle Trachtenberg (Tika), and Jason Marsden (Tas). In addition we have some exclusive stills from the movie which is due for release on January 15th 2008. We'd like to thanks the folks on the NWN2 IRC #nwn2CR channel for their input into the questions, as well as Maximus for his. Finally, thanks to Shane K. DeFreest of Maverick Public Relations for enabling us to conduct this interview. Here is an excerpt:
Is Tas portrayed as a thief like he is in the books?

Cindi Rice: We tried to follow Margaret & Tracy's careful balance with Tasslehoff, portraying him as a fun-loving "acquirer". While he is definitely a "thief" in game terms, it's important to keep in mind that as a character, Tas does not see himself like that at all. He doesn't plan to steal or take things from anyone, and he's always happy to give them back if anyone notices. This may seem like a fine line, but it's one of the many things that make him so fascinating as a character. Tas just unconsciously collects things that attract his attention (no matter who happens to possess them at the time), though he is genuinely surprised if anyone accuses him of stealing something.

When casting for each character, what was it that you were looking for?

Cindi Rice: Obviously, the most important thing was finding talented actors, as well as making sure all the voices were distinct from one another, though each character did have key qualities we wanted to embody through their voices. For Tas, we were seeking a voice that could combine eager enthusiasm and innocence. For Flint, we needed to convey his friendly gruffness, in contrast to Fizban, who had to come across both bumbling and lovable. Tika needed to be vibrant and coy, while Laurana's voice should seem both naïve and regal. Sturm's voice required quiet strength and nobility, and we felt that Goldmoon should sound wise and steadfast. Tanis was probably the hardest, since he needed to seem haunted and uncertain, while also instilling confidence as the default leader of the companions.
