I'm adding the MoTB HotFix links and installation guide to this post, just in case anyone needs them. Rob McGinnis has posted up a simple set of instruction on how to install MoTB to avoid errors/conflicts. If you do not apply the hot fixes, when you attempt to play the game you will see sections of missing text and the Campaign name will say it is undefined. When installing MoTB, please use the following instructions:
Quick Pros :Great story, love interest options, loads of unique creatures, items, and settings. Quick Cons :Combat can be a little imbalanced at times.
Be prepared to be whisked away by a tale of the ancient, the occult, and the metaphysical. NX1 is a strong story driven module that incorporates some of the best aspects of the expansion material.
Thanks Dormammu as well to our Review Admin. If you would like to add your module for review, go here for NWN1 requests, and here for NWN2 Requests The NWVault Review Guild is accepting applications for new members. If you are interested in joining the guild, follow this link
With the release of MoTB came the ability for bulders to use portraits in their modules (rather than the 3D images). We are pleased to announce that we have opened up a new NWN2 Portraits category and you can submit your portraits here.

When installing MoTB, please use the following instructions:
1. Install NWN2 2. Patch NWN2 to the latest version (1.10 as of Sept. 29, 2007) 3. Install Mask of The Betrayer 4. Download and apply the hot fix for your language, listed below.
If you do not apply the hot fixes, when you attempt to play the game you will see sections of missing text and the Campaign name will say it is undefined.
If someone buys nwn2 and motb, installs both and goes to play the nwn2 campaign then motb they won't be able too. The oc gets broken by motb.
That's not true, either.
MoTB does not break the NWN2 OC in any way.
If you install NWN2, then install MoTB, your game will have all of the engine fixes that have been released. What you don't get is all of the module (and campaign setting) fixes. This means that your NWN2 OC is the same as if it was unpatched.
That is being worked on, and hopefully will be out soon.
On release day, there was a patch that was necessary that took the game to 1.01.
OC + Patches = OK
OC + MoTB = not OK, for the same reason mentioned above. Without the campaign fix, which is part of the patches. Not by an issue caused by MoTB, but because of a pre-existing issue. That's why you patch.
OC + Patches + MoTB = TLK Issue because the patcher recognizes the TLK file from 1.10 as being newer than MoTB.
OC + Patches + MoTB + TLK Fix = Everything OK.
So, the OC is not broken by MoTB. Make sense now?
If MoTB broke the OC then, even if you patched, you would have OC problems, but that is not the case.
I'll just post what I asked in another thread in hopes that Rob'll see it.
That quote you got from the other thread, Rob, is before the 1116 version of the v1.10 patch. I'm on that 1116 version, so would the procedure for me be the same as you stated above, but without the hotfix?
Oh, and also I might need to double check my CD-key and possibly change if back to it's original if something goes whacky on me after installing MotB, right?
If you had MoTB installed, you will need to change your cdkey ini file.
If you only had NWN2 installed, you may be fine.

We thought you'd like to read a little bit about what community members are saying about MoTB, so here are a few excerpts to give you an idea. (No spoilers some posts chopped up to avoid spoilers.)
"I am all in all extremely pleased with how the game turned out. It's the first RPG purchase in a very long time that I was very pleased and satisfied with once I completed the game.
The story and writing is a lot better than the NWN2 OC. Some of the jabs that Myrkul takes (particularly at Kaelyn) are just lovely to read and hear.
I also loved the fact that we got a return of narrative text. I for one don't think that a good narrative can ever be replaced by good graphics in a RPG. The narrator was very good as well, and I can only wish that he had gotten even more "screentime".
"The areas are very atmospheric and unique from one another. My favourite has to be Myrkuls vault in the Shadow Plane. Together with the wonderful music, it really gave a very oppressive feel to the area. The furnace area was especially wonderful (and horrible).
And yes, all the new music is very appreciated. I also like the approach the composer took with it, with a much more ambient feel rather than bombastic orchestral sections. Great stuff."
"I found the plane of shadows a really boring place to be, mainly because it was grey - but it represented itself well, it truely was a place you didnt want to be in. Me and my friend got so bored in that plane we stopped playing the expansion campaign for a day while we dueled on more colourful servers
As soon as i discovered the other quests beyond the plane on shadow it was a breath of freshair, colourful and breathtaking"
"All in all I thought it was fantastic. Its almost up there with Torment. The only bugs I encountered were inability to interact with some doors and chests, or rather, I can interact with them, but nothing happens when I do. I will say one thing though, the voice acting... VAST improvement. Like holy crap. The only voice in the whole game I wasn't too fond of was Safiya. Nice twist on the narrator too. Not quite Icewind Dale, but close."

Computer Games has published a review of MoTB here giving it a score of 88/100 and a Silver award. The review runs into 6 pages with plenty of screenshots, and please be aware that it does contain some spoilers. Here is an excerpt:
On the technical side of things, MotB has the same strengths and weaknesses as its predecessor. On one hand, the voice acting and soundtrack are excellent, with the musical score being completely new an admirable achievement, considering the budget limitations for an expansion. The locations, even if fewer in number, look a lot better than those in NWN2, with additional particle effects, like ash, giving a much needed finishing touch to underline the atmosphere of the place youre in. And as far as the cool factor is concerned, the Astral plane is by far the winner in this category the only downside being that your visit to this plane will be extremely short.
On the other hand, as far as performance goes, its every man for himself. Its true that MotB runs better than NWN2 did at launch, but there are still some annoying performance issues. For instance, changing the shadow quality from low to medium (or vice-versa!?) can lead to a dramatic framerate drop, even on very powerful PCs. This can be countered by testing each setting and finding a balance between quality and performance (or simply restarting the game), but the number of bugs is frightening.
Yes, NWN2 did have its share of bugs too, but in MotB there are a lot more programming glitches which can ruin the game experience. Triggers that dont activate properly, items that suddenly disappear from the inventory, side-quests which cant be completed without the dev console, spells which work only on your character, even though for instance you need to heal a companion, and the list can go on.
However, Mask of the Betrayer is without a doubt one of the most pleasant surprises of the year and further proof that Obsidian Entertainment can create quality RPGs if no one is standing with a shotgun at their backs to get the game done as soon as possible (yes, LucasArts, Im looking at you). Its also true however that if on the story, dialogues and character fronts MotB is an excellent example of how things should be done, on the technical and bug-fixing aspect, Obsidian still has some work to do.
Regardless of these problems however, Mask of the Betrayer is a triumph which should be saluted by all RPG fans, since it proves once and for all that old school RPG principles wonderful story, interesting characters, great dialogues which seem to have been forgotten by newer RPGs, are still as valid as ever.

More: 16 is a replacement for the hotfix. I didn't think it was going live until the morning.
Well, surprise!
16, I believe, allows you to install NWN2 fresh, then install MoTB, then apply this one patch and be done with it. I will confirm when I get in the office tomorrow.
There is currently a patch available on the Autopatcher. DO NOT INSTALL THIS PATCH!
If you do, it will overwrite your CD Key(s) and cause you much havoc.
Edit If this patch has already been installed, you will need to manually open the file "nwncdkey.ini" and replace the CD key(s) with the original keys you entered at the time of installing the game. The file can be found in the NWN2 install folder.
If you have a backup of nwn2cdkey.ini from after you installed MotB, you can instead just restore the file from your backup.

If you do NOT have MoTB installed, and patched up, you are fine.
If you DO have MoTB installed, you probably ran into the CD key issue.
The patch has been pulled. Hopefully it is just a case of removing a file - but as all things seem to go, it will probably involve rebuilding all of the patches. If that's the case, it will be a while.
new patch? If you patch to 1.06, or 1.10+manual Hotfix, you will be ok.
We have removed part of the patch that causes problems. There is still part of the patch which can be downloaded and installed. You should be OK with it, but I suggest holding off, just in case.
At least one thing is sure, there has been issues with the patches. I've myselves been involved in patching problems, at the level of trying to get patches instead of delivering the entire application... We never made it..
However, with the confusion around this and the troubles that seems to be showing up with MotB I've got a couple of suggestions. - If possible, make a critical rebuild aka 1.00->1.11(joining of OC and MotB) and put it on the vault. Preferably some way that it can be downloaded over bittorrent. Me, and a lot of others with me, won't mind downloading a couple of gigs. I mean, we do it all the time anyways... After all, I'm downloading demos of 2gigs just to try out a game I'm probably not going to buy.
- Clean up the auto-patcher. The auto-patching process from a fresh install to the latest should leave the game in "perfect" conditions. The way I see it this has one mandatory, and one optional job. The mandatory is to create a new run, fixing up the patches that's creating troubles and making sure that every step leaves the game in a state that is not getting "invalid file" problems. The optional is to create miniature patches to get those who are somewhere in the bad run into the perfect run. Eg. Perfect run is 1.0 - 1.1.67 - 1.2.45 - ... Bad run is 1.0 - 1.1.58 - 1.2.33 - ... Miniature patches are 1.1.58 -> 1.1.67, 1.2.33 -> 1.2.45, ... Putting the patches (perfect and miniature) on the vault too would make it possible to look at the game version to determine if the games are equal. At least, making the perfect run will make sure that a fresh install will have people on the right track.
-Finally, at the very least I think that something has to be done to make 1.11 or 1.12 the start of a "perfect run" including both the OC and MotB. I believe that this can be achieved by making smaller critical rebuilds, aiming to catch up the patches we know are having issues. Eg if 1.4.78 is known to be troublesome to update further, a new 1.4.78 -> next should be extended with the files that are in trouble and completely replace these. That way, it should be possible to get a point in the patching sequence where the game will be in the same state, no matter how it has been patched (of course given that the new patches has been used).
Apart from that, I still salute Obsidian for doing a great effort. Seven or eight patches plus hotfixes is not common for any games, and they are still going strong.
In the works.

I have tried to grab the alpha patch to test it out, but I get the following error: Behold! What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Are you running directly from the ZIP folder or extracting it to your NWN directory? Because it looks like you're just running from the ZIP so it's extracting the one file out and not finding the other libraries. Plus it won't work if it's not in the NWN folder (not "/home/../packaging/tmp/")
I'll need more info to help you out though, like what OS and how you're running it.
