Siege Warfare in Age of Conan
By Crom! The latest Clan of Conan newsletter is out this evening. Of interest, is an article about Player-versus-player siege warfare in Age of Conan. Here's a taste to get ya started:
Siege warfare was brought into Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures because Funcom as developers wanted to give players that epic feeling of being part of a large-scale battle. We have all watched movies like Braveheart, 300, Kingdom of Heaven – all these epic battle movies – and we realized how amazing it would be to bring that into a massive online game. So we did, naturally.

If you ever open a Conan book or comic, you quickly realize that war rages across the ravaged surface of Hyboria. Conflicts are not so much an exception as it is a fact of life, not necessarily between the nations themselves, but often between factions residing within their troubled borders.

In Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures player guilds will sooner or later end up in such conflicts with each other. Once a guild reaches a reasonable size and stature on a server, the opportunity to own a battlekeep will soon arise. But with only a limited number of battlekeeps per server allowed, guilds will have to war against each other in order to secure the power and fortune for themselves.

StarCraft 2 Official Q&A; Issue 15
Blizzard smacked up issue #15 of its official StarCraft 2 Q&A; series (thanks Unofficial StarCraft 2 website) where they answer some questions about salvaging upgraded buildings, nukes, Ghosts, High Templer attacks and stimmed up Marines in bunkers.
1) Can an upgraded command center be salvaged? Does it lose its mobility when upgraded to a surveillance station?

No, the command center cannot be salvaged, nor can it lift off after it is upgraded to a Surveillance Station (allows the use of the Comsat ability).

2) In Starcraft 1, when you cancel a nuclear launch that is in progress, you lose the warhead. Will Starcraft II make any changes to this setback? (starcrafttwo.com)

Currently, if you cancel the nuke while it is firing, you will still lose the nuke. This outcome has not yet been finalized and may be changed in the final version.

3) Can a Ghost be equipped with both a Nuke and Drop Pod simultaneously?

Yes, any Ghost can launch either a Nuke or a Drop Pod, making the Ghost highly effective at responding to multiple battle circumstances.

4) Will "caster" units, such as the Protoss High Templar, have a regular attack, like Tassadar had in SC1, or will they only be able to attack through their spells? (blizzplanet.com)

Currently, there are no plans to give the High Templar a physical attack, though High Templar Story Characters will have additional abilities beyond that of the standard unit. At the moment, the High Templar is one of best support units in the game, with the ability to cast a devastating Psi Storm or choke off crucial areas of the map with the force field ability. Once youve used up its energy, no worries, convert it into an Archon with another Templar.

5) Can Marines be Stimmed while in a bunker? What about a Ghosts snipe ability?

In the current build, abilities cannot be activated while inside a bunker, but you can activate abilities before entering a bunker. For example, if you activate Stim Pack on a few Marines, then enter a bunker, they will attack at the higher rate of fire from inside the bunker. The Stim Pack effects will still wear off as normal though.

Bungie Addresses Halo 3 at 640p
This installment of the Bungie Weekly Update tackles Halo 3 running natively at 640p:
You Owe me 80p!

One item making the interwebs rounds this week was the scandalous revelation that Halo 3 runs at “640p” which isn’t even technically a resolution. However, the interweb detectives did notice that Halo 3’s vertical resolution, when captured from a frame buffer, is indeed 640 pixels. So what gives? Did we short change you 80 pixels?

Naturally it’s more complicated than that. In fact, you could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers – both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see – lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible – so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.

This ability to display a full range of HDR, combined with our advanced lighting, material and postprocessing engine, gives our scenes, large and small, a compelling, convincing and ultimately “real” feeling, and at a steady and smooth frame rate, which in the end was far more important to us than the ability to display a few extra pixels. Making this decision simpler still is the fact that the 360 scales the “almost-720p” image effortlessly all the way up to 1080p if you so desire.

In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it’s practically impossible to discern the difference. We would ignore it entirely were it not for the internet’s propensity for drama where none exists. In fact the reason we haven’t mentioned this before in weekly updates, is the simple fact that it would have distracted conversation away from more important aspects of the game, and given tinfoil hats some new gristle to chew on as they catalogued their toenail clippings.

Our own Gabe Newell demoed never-before-seen content from Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Portal on Dell’s newest high-performance gaming notebook, the XPS M1730, and debuted a new Orange Box ad coming soon to major TV networks—stay tuned. In and around the show, "Alyx" look-alikes invited folks to play Team Fortress 2 at Dell's mobile gaming bus, which will be stationed at the show through September 30 and on tour in the US—with TF2 riding "shotgun" through the holidays.

Next week, over 700 players from 75 countries (along with an expected 70,000 attendees) will gather in Seattle for the World Cyber Games, one of the world's most prominent professional gaming competitions. If you're headed to the festival, stop by Valve's exhibit to playtest Left 4 Dead and register to win cool prizes.

Two new TF2 character movies are heading your way: On Monday, check the trailer link on Steam for the Russian language version of Meet the Heavy. Within a week or so, we'll introduce you to the one-eyed grenade-lobbing Scot, the Demoman.

    Fallout 3 Interview
Bethesda Producer Gavin Carter was interviewed over at GameShark today. The topic? Fallout 3:
GameShark - Some have criticized the PC version of Oblivion for having a UI that was too much like the console game, not taking enough advantage of higher PC resolutions for things like the inventory UI, etc. How different will the UI for the PC version of Fallout 3 be, compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions?

Gavin Carter - The interfaces will be very similar in terms of art and layout. We are more sensitive to the PC side of things this time around, and as such the default font is smaller than what we had in Oblivion. We have a number of other things we’re doing to make the PC interface better.

Harry Potter Calls Shenanigans Against Halo 3
    - 9 Comments
Since Microsoft saw fit to compare $60 games to $10 movies and declared Halo 3 to be the biggest entertainment launch ever, Harry Potter's publisher decided that $20 books should count too.
Scholastic spokeswoman Kyle Good says it sold 8.3 million copies of "Potter" in the U.S. on July 21. That means the book could have raked in anywhere from $149.3 million to $290.4 million in first-day U.S. sales.

    ...

Suffice it to say, it's a close call between the two -- that is, unless you look at unit sales. With "Halo 3" selling at anywhere from $60 to $130, that means Microsoft could not have sold more than 2.83 million units for the game. That's slightly better than one-third the 8.3 million "Potter" sales.

    Command & Conquer 3 Battlecast
Aaron, a.k.a. Apoc, and his merry band of EALA developers have released the second Battlecast, a Command & Conquer 3 TV show covering the best online matches, news, events, and so on and so forth. Included in the latest 'cast is a preview of the new units in the expansion pack, a preview of patch 1.09, Apoc acting a clown at the Leipzig Games Convention, Kane getting pimped out by the PR department, and a selection of multiplayer matches from the best league players.

One final item of note is the launch of CnCMovies, a website made entirely by Apoc that features all the FMV sequences from the C&C; games, up to the launch of Generals - well worth checking out!

Update: The movies site got nuked due to legal nonsense:

If you had a chance to check out my special project website for the 12th anniversary that I have mentioned and which was mentioned on BattleCast Primetime Episode 2 and announced in the C&C; newsletter:

    www.cncmovies.com

Right now the site redirects to our home page, www.commandandconquer.com.

The unfortunate reason for this is we are currently having some legal ramifications with the site that we are trying to quickly sort out. As you can imagine, a site which plays host to some 50+ actors who have been apart of the Command & Conquer series in its 12 year run thus far, can of course have some legal issues attached to it.

We had thought we were in the clear but were then asked to bring the site down temporarily. We will not have further info on getting the site back up until at least Monday. This of course is heart-breaking news to me as this special project was my personal community manager gift back to the community to celebrate the 12th anniversary.

So, lets all cross our fingers that we can get this legally sorted and this "historic" site back up and running.

Thanks again for the compliments and support, I hope to get this resolved favorably. It’s very uncertain right now. Will keep you posted.

Guy Takes BioShock Too Seriously and Kills Real Little Sister; Big Daddy Says He Is Not To Blame

Here's some more fuel for Jack Thompson's fire:

Videogames are often criticised for negatively influencing the behaviour of their players, and the latest report from KCTV, telling the story of a Kansas teenager who strangled his little sister after she interrupted him while he was playing 2K Games' Xbox 360 masterpiece, Bioshock, isn’t going to help the cause.

“I get really into my games and when Brit’ came over to me to watch TV I forgot I was in a game and accidentally strangled her,” Sean Conner told KCTV yesterday.

Bill Roper on the "Dying Single Player Genre"
Has single-player gaming run out of steam? is a question The Guardian asked Flagship's Bill Roper. Here's what the man who brought you games like Diablo (and soon Hellgate London) had to say on the matter.
"We love randomisation," says Bill Roper, Flagship's CEO. "It adds so much replayability to the game, as there is always the chance that a player will find something new, or emergent behavior will create a new experience. When done right, randomisation doesn't come off as being random - which is kind of an odd way to think about it. Basically, you don't want your environments to feel haphazardly slapped together. You want them to feel cohesive and coherent. This sort of thing is the real challenge and art of creating a highly randomised game, and is why you don't see many of them. If you get it right, it looks really simple. But it's very hard to get right."

Tellingly, though, Hellgate also supports an extensive multiplayer component. "One of the unique things about Hellgate: London is that it is both a standalone, single-player experience," Roper notes, "and an MMO when you go online. The single-player version of the game provides somewhere between 20 and 40 hours of play. When you go online, you get much more. The storyline remains - of course, you can go through it alone or with friends - but in addition to that are all the community and economy aspects of an MMO. That means you can form guilds, groups, buy and sell items to other players via an auction house and so forth. The game is a complete experience, both for single players and online gamers, but we wanted to have a model that also supported continuing content."

Thanks Unofficial HGL site who also noticed there's some new (affordable) Hellgate London figurines on the market if you happen to shop Korean.

    PGR 4 Interview
Team Xbox rubbed out an interview with Bizarre Creations' Ben Ward about its soon-to-be released 360 racer, Project Gotham Racing 4.
TXB: Since the last PGR was an Xbox 360 launch title, you’ve obviously had much more time with the hardware. What have you learned about the console’s capabilities since the last title that you’ve put to use in PGR4?

Ben Ward: Hundreds of things. Our guys have been working with the 360 for several years now, so we know a lot more about what it’s capable of and where we can push it. We’ve also been working on some shared technology internal to Bizarre, which we use across both PGR4 and The Club (our 3rd person shooter in development). Overall we’ve been much smarter in our use of the hardware (having final kits helps!), and I think the proof is in the pudding. PGR4 looks a level above number 3 in my opinion.

SCi Swimming In Red Ink; Aims to Stem Tide With Sequels

According to GameSpot, SCi's year-end fiscal report shows significant losses, but fear not, because a bunch of sequels are coming:

"We are looking forward with much anticipation to the sequels to Just Cause and Battlestations: Midway, which are already in development, and new versions of world-leading franchises Tomb Raider and Hitman," chief executive Jane Cavanagh said in SCi's year-end report.

That was the good news from the company's fiscal-year recap. The bad news was that the company posted lower revenues than it had the year before, and £30 million ($60.8 million) in losses before tax. For the prior year, SCi managed to turn a profit of £8.1 million ($16.4 million).

    F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate Preview
IGN has popped out a two-page preview of F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate, the upcoming standalone expansion pack currently being developed by TimeGate Studios, the designers of the first F.E.A.R. expansion.

It looks like this upcoming chapter won't be straying too far from the original game, although it does have a couple of new weapons and enemies:

Perseus Mandate, from the beginning parts we shot our way through, plays precisely like F.E.A.R. and Extraction Point. In fact, the environments at the beginning of the game look almost identical to those in F.E.A.R, set in underground parking garages, darkened office buildings, and grayish corridors. The storyline is a little different, however, as you follow a second F.E.A.R. squad in a timeline that runs concurrently with the original. As the first F.E.A.R. team is making its way through the Armacham facility, you're sent in with a team to uncover Perseus, whatever that may be.

Perseus Mandate is due out in November.

    Quake Wars v1.1 Retail Patch
Time sure flies when you're having fun, huh? Splash Damage has released the v1.1 client patch for Quake Wars, which isn't even in stores yet (but will be soon). Here's what it does:
Now that the wait for Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars is almost over, we are turning our attention towards post-release support and making sure the community has what it needs.

We started working on game improvements as soon as we wrapped up work on the demo and a first, small update is ready to go now and will be available for download shortly. We're rolling this update out through the in-game auto updater, so the download process will be completely automated. We're also providing a few external mirrors in case you want to download the file separately or are experiencing problems grabbing it via the updater.

The game will check for updates every time the game starts up. In addition, there's a handy 'Check for Updates' button in the options menu. The game will let you know once the file is downloaded and ready to install.

As mentioned before, this update is pretty small and contains a few things that will improve your Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars experience. Here's the changelog:

    • Updated Linux client compatibility
    • Fixed performance drop of soft particles on some graphics cards
    • Removed XP award for destroying newly spawned vehicles (spawn camping)
    • Improved bot control of the GDF Titan Tank
    • Fixed dedicated LAN server administrators reverting to default group on map change
    • Fixed players occasionally not being able to change the mission they are on
    • Server Launcher now clears the map rotation when changing game mode
    • Fixed localized clients reverting to unlocalized if player starts a lite server on the same PC
    • Fixed image pure check (anti-cheating) erroneously failing for MegaTextures

Mocib: Will the SP demo be a full 1:1 representation of the quality of the retail version i.e. is it "fully featured", technology wise? DX9+DX10, highest res textures and so on? Also, will the SP demo feature a benchmark mode?

CrySeb: We plan to have all of this answered with a 'yes!' when the demo comes out.

Keep in mind, his answer isn't some binding agreement that the demo will include DX10 and be perfect. It's just a guy from Crytek hanging out in a fansite's chat room answering informal questions.

World of WarCraft Wrath of the Lich King Preview
    - 4 Comments
1Up/GFW Mag conjured up a preview of World of WarCraft Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard's upcoming mega-cash cow expansion pack.
The Death Knight - WOW's first Hero Class

World of WarCraft's first new class is also its first ever Hero Class -- though the implementation may not be exactly what you were expecting. "One of the ideas we had for the Death Knight was that you'd convert your character into a Death Knight," says lead game designer Tom Chilton. "That you would stop being a level 80 Mage or whatever and become a Death Knight. But when we were running that around the team, it was too common a sentiment to feel like, well, I don't want to lose my existing character. What I'm going to actually do is create a level 1 Hunter that I intend to turn into a Death Knight, and power him to level 80...and this would become a weird hoop you were going to have to jump through."

Another Team Fortress 2 patch & Pyro Love Soon
    - 15 Comments
Two Team Fortress 2 patches in so many days? You betcha. That's why it's called a beta. Log in to Steam to download this latest update. In other TF2 news, Rock, Paper, Shotgun is reporting that Pyros are going to get some much needed love (thanks Jakey2.0). Says Valve's Robin Walker:
“The Pyro doesn’t get lag compensation with the flamethrower in the same way which other characters do for their weaponry, which I think has a really subtle effect on perception, and it gets worse as your net connection gets worse. It’s one of the vagaries of multiplayer. Sometimes you think that what’s going on might not be what’s going on. But this is why we gather lots of data.”

Halo 3 Natively runs at 640p?
Much like Perfect Dark Zero, it appears that Halo 3 runs natively at 640p according to some bright eyed posters at Beyond 3D. The game then upscales to whatever you have your 360 dashboard set to.

Most 360 games run natively at 720p, in case you were curious.

    20 Open World Games

Gamasutra has another one of their Game Design Essentials articles up, with this one taking a look at 20 open-ended games, and what effect they had on the industry. While the obvious suspects (GTA anyone?) are mentioned, some obscure titles get a chance to shine, such as 1987's A.P.B.:
Players also get demerits for running people over, for crashing their vehicle, and for who-knows-what other things. All kinds of things give out demerits in this game, and doing well at it requires that players be incredibly attentive. But there are also secret areas scattered around, off-road sections containing all kinds of hidden bonuses. Of course, it's counter-productive to grab bonuses when the player's behind on making quota. I haven't even mentioned the A.P.B.s themselves yet, who if brought in mean the player doesn't have to worry about quota.

So, with all this stuff to keep track of, does A.P.B. make it work? They make it rather unfriendly to new players, but buried beneath it all is a genuinely interesting game. Once all the various aspects have been mastered it is possible to get quite hooked on it, but it expects far more out of the player than most arcade games.

Halo 3 is simply "Halo 2 in HD"
This is pretty amusing. Last night Bungie was on-hand addressing questions at a Halo 3 launch in Waterloo when someone asked them if Halo 3 is simply "Halo 2 in HD".
"Stuff like the water, stuff like our HDR (high dynamic range or next-gen lighting) model, I think that stuff is so beautiful and so subtle and over time I hope people will appreciate that stuff as much as we do right now.

"Something like the HDR is really beautiful but it creeps up on you over time while you're playing the game, the way the light behaves. Like I said we're really happy."

He added: "We think it's a beautiful game at Bungie. Folks who have complained about the graphics in the large part have said 'I don't like the way it looks' then they pick it up and they play it for half-an-hour and then four hours later they're still playing and that's the last time you hear them saying anything about the game."

Would you be interested in us picking up a dedicated console news editor, or do we post enough console stuff already?
