I've been replaying some games on the new PC that I kinda either passed over, wasn't in the mood to play at the time, and / or was waiting for patches for them to be "finished". Here's a quick rundown:
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - With the 1.0004 patch the game has hit what I like to call a "finished state". I did play it about 8 hours before on the old PC, but it was kinda buggy and didn't run so great, so I shelved it for a few months. I'm glad I did, as it's worth a second look (or a first) if you haven't sampled it already. Plus, its like $29 now too.

Command & Conquer 3 - I thought it was pretty good the first time I played it on mostly medium settings. Quick load times, smooth graphics, nice shaders, etc. One of the big problems I had was that the view was so close to the ground. After playing SupCom, CNC3 felt claustrophobic. I don't know if they zoomed it out a bit more over time in various patches, but it's not an issue anymore. Irregardless, CNC3 looks fab fully cranked up and the cut scenes are amusing.

After I finish those two, I'll probably play Oblivion: Shivering Isles.

Today's question:

What are some games you've bought this past year (or so) but haven't gotten around to playing yet?

Name that UT3 CTF Map Contest
Epic is having a little trouble naming this capture the flag map in Unreal Tournament 3 (as seen below). Have any idears?
Calling all Unreal Tournament fans: Epic needs your help! We have a capture the flag map that needs a name, and we thought we’d turn to you for great ideas. We’ll start with an open call for name suggestions. We’ll give that until (9/10/07), then pick our favorite.

Here’s some tips on how we choose a name:

  • It has to sound cool!
  • The name must be of the form “CTF-Name”. Multi-word names should be capitalized, i.e., “CTF-FirstSecondThirdWord”.
  • Don’t be silly with using names trademarked by someone else, immature stuff, etc. -
  • The name has to fit the mood. This level takes place in orbit around Omicron 6, the home of the sinister Necris. CTF-HappySunriseBunnyKisses is not appropriate.
  • The name has to relate to the map closely, so that if someone says the map name you’ll know which one they mean. For example, a map with a big suspension bridge is called CTF-Suspense. The UT DM map with the deadly pressure chamber was called DM-Pressure. We’ve broken this rule sometimes, but it’s something we’re paying more attention to in UT3.
  • For this map, the obvious hook is the gorgeous skybox with the star (Omicron) rising over the planet’s horizon.

I'll go with CTF-BrokenMoon.

Medal of Honor Airborne Ships To Stores
EuroGamer's review calls Airborne, "the best World War II game to date."

Get ready to get airborne! Medal of Honor Airborne, the latest installment from EA’s critically-acclaimed Medal of Honor franchise has shipped to store shelves across North America and the UK for the PC and Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system. The game will ship to retailers throughout Europe on September 7. Medal of Honor Airborne is set to redefine the series and will change the way shooters are played. Medal of Honor Airborne offers a dramatically different approach to FPS games with its unprecedented non-linear gameplay.

“In recreating the largest airdrops in history, Medal of Honor Airborne brings a dramatic change and opens up the FPS genre with the innovative airdrop experience," explained Patrick Gilmore, VP and Executive Producer at EALA. “Players have the ability to land anywhere on the battlefield, and choose their own tactics to achieve victory, delivering unprecedented variety and freedom to the combat experience.”

For the first time in a FPS game, players airdrop into combat from a C-47 and land anywhere in an open battlefield. The first step is everything and the player’s landing spot can dramatically change the course of battle. Conflict on the ground offers unprecedented tactical choice in vertical, open battle spaces with a wealth of attack routes and flanking opportunities.

The Medal of Honor Airborne development team continues to ensure that the ideals and integrity of the prestigious Congressional Medal of Honor are accurately reflected in the game. The producers sought counsel from numerous expert sources to make certain the game is historically accurate and as true to the WWII Airborne experience as possible.

Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino has scored the music for Medal of Honor Airborne. An esteemed composer for numerous film and TV projects such as “Lost”, “Alias,” M:i:III (2007), The Incredibles (2004), and most recently Ratatouille (2007), Giacchino has been repeatedly recognized for his contributions to theatrical composition and score. As the original composer and creator of the memorable theme music for the Medal of Honor series, he helped set the bar for using music to bring emotion into gaming. Giacchino’s extraordinary talents and musical sensibility have been utilized once again to bring a new dimension to the WWII FPS experience of Medal of Honor Airborne.

Developed at EA Los Angeles under the EA brand, Medal of Honor Airborne is rated ‘T’ for Teen by the ESRB, 16+ by PEGI, and 18+ by USK. The Xbox 360 version has a US MSRP of $59.99 and the PC version has a US MSRP of $49.99. Medal of Honor Airborne for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system will ship in November.

Picking up a copy? If not, was it the laughable AI present in the demo that turned you off?

THEY Screenshots & Trailer

THEY's just another sci-fi shooter from the studio that created Infernal:

Does the world need another science fiction first person shooter?

This is a question, where nearly every player would answer in a different way, as it is a matter of taste – the same with WWII Shooters. But as THEY is not only a Sci-Fi shooter, it’s a nexgen mystery FPS, so THEY will be different from a “just another Sci-Fi shooter” image. If you like to compare, it is best to think about the scripting and atmosphere of FEAR, where Monolith did a great job, transferred into another story and moved away from horror to mystery. Of course Sci-Fi (and WWII) scenarios are very common, but on the other hand these are successful! Why should any team invent the wheel in a new way, if the current one is still up and running?

I hope ya'll didn't labor too much over the holiday weekend. We (Andy and myself) played a ton of Hellgate London co-op (12 or so hours) and had a lot of fun. Andy took a 10-minute fraps of one of the runs and I think it turned out realllly nice. It reminded me a lot of some of that Left 4 Dead footage (but in a different setting). I snapped off some lovely screens as well. Hopefully they'll let us post it!

Today's question:

What makes co-op so much fun?
