'OPEN WATER' Duo Prepare A New Thriller For Paramount Vantage
Variety.com reports that writer-director Chris Kentis and producer Laura Lau are reteaming on an untitled thriller for Paramount Vantage -- their first film since indie hit "Open Water."
Kentis wrote and will direct the Vantage project, which is eying an early 2008 start.
Story revolves around a young woman who is arrested for a crime she didn't commit and plunged into a state of confusion and psychological terror as she defends herself.
"Chris and Laura have the ability to tap into viewers' fears and anxieties and create scenarios that are truly terrifying in their realism," rep John Lesher said.

Lackluster DVD Re-Release Planned For 'PROM NIGHT'
DavisDVD.com reports that Echo Bridge Home Entertainment will release a new widescreen edition of the Jamie Lee Curtis slasher Prom Night on October 2nd. No word yet if it'll be a proper anamorphic transfer this go-around, but one can always hope. Retail is $6.99.

WB Set To Bring ‘CONDEMNED: CRIMINAL ORIGINS’ Video Game To The Big Screen!
Hollywoodreporter.com reports that director Tarsem Singh is set to return to the studio world with The Unforgettable, a science fiction thriller from Warner Bros. Pictures being produced by Basil Iwanyk, David Goyer and Jason Hall.
"Unforgettable," originally titled "Species X," centers on a cop who in the course of a murder investigation realizes that he is not human and uncovers a war between good and evil aliens.
The project is based on the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment video game "The Condemned: Criminal Origins," which Hall and Nathan Hendrickson created. Hall most recently was senior vp WBIE and oversaw such games as "300: March to Glory," "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and "The Matrix Online."

Say It Ain’t So! Len Wisemen In Talks To Direct ‘ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK’ Remake!
Hollywoodreporter.com also reports that Len Wiseman, the director behind "Live Free of Die Hard," is in negotiations to helm Escape From New York, New Line Cinema's remake of the cult John Carpenter movie.
The project was set up at New Line in March with Neal Moritz producing and Gerard Butler attached to star as anti-hero Snake Plissken.
Ken Nolan ("Black Hawk Down") wrote the script, which will combine an origin story for Plissken merged with the story of the 1981 movie. The original film was set in a futuristic 1997, when Manhattan had been turned into a giant maximum-security prison. The U.S. president's plane crashed on the island, and Plissken -- incarcerated for robbing a federal reserve bank -- was coerced into a rescue mission.

Fox To Release Unrated ‘DAY WATCH’ DVD In October
Bloody-Disgusting.com reports that the action-packed fantasy thriller Day Watch soars onto DVD October 30th from Fox Home Entertainment. Available as an Unrated Edition DVD featuring footage not shown in theaters from the remarkable cinematic vision of cutting-edge director Timur Bekmambetov, DAY WATCH is the second installment of the innovative film trilogy (the follow-up to last year’s critically-acclaimed Night Watch) based on the best-selling horror/sci-fi novels by Sergei Luyanenko. DAY WATCH revolves around the ancient war between the forces of Light and Darkness that is reaching it’s tragic outcome. The DAY WATCH Unrated Edition DVD includes the original theatrical Russian language version of the film, as well as an English language dub, along with “The Making of Day Watch†featurette, plus director commentary, original Russian trailers and more. Special ‘HATCHET’ Screening Scheduled For New England Area In September
We have been sent some new information regarding the highly anticipated release of Adam Green’s acclaimed horror flick “Hatchetâ€. Read on to find out what’s up:
Newbury Comics, a New England-based comic book chain, will be hosting a special HATCHET screening on Wednesday, September 4th at the AMC Loews Boston Commons. Ice Cube To Star In Film Adaptation of Graphic Novel '10'
Variety.com reports that Ice Cube's shingle is circling a bigscreen adaptation of the graphic novel 10 at Dimension as a starring vehicle for the thesp.
Gustin Nash and Jesse Cale adapted the graphic novel by Shannon Eric Denton and Keith Giffen. Story revolves around a guy who gets what appears to be junk mail informing him he's in a competition with nine others and that whoever gets out alive wins. He throws away the letter, but then a man toting an ax shows up at the door.

Alexandre Aja Produced 'P2' Coming To Theaters In November
Fangoria.com has just got word from Summit Entertainment that it will release the suspense-chiller P2 in over 2,000 U.S. theaters November 9. Marking the directorial debut of "The Hills Have Eyes" remake editor Franck Khalfoun, who scripted with "Hills" Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur, the movie stars Rachel ("The Woods") Nichols as Angela, a young executive who becomes stranded in an underground parking garage when her car won’t start and she can’t get a cell phone signel. She’s approached by a security guard ("Ghost Rider"s Wes Bentley), who at first seems friendly but soon turns menacing, forcing Angela to fight for her life.

'FREDDY vs. JASON vs. ASH' Finally Coming To Life... As A Comic Book!
Newsarama.com reports that it’s something of a Holy Grail to horror fans – a three-way meeting between Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Jason from the Friday the 13th franchise, and Ashley J. Williams from the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness franchise.
The rumors of such a meeting started back somewhere in the early part of the decade, with later reports in the trades that Sam (Evil Dead) Raimi and Bruce Campbell were getting in on the talks with New Line. Scripts and treatments, all purported to be the “real†one flew fast and furious around the internet, and in the end…nothing happened.
Until now.
In November, DC and Dynamite Entertainment will re-team for another crossover between their respective licensed properties for a six-issue Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash miniseries written by James Kuhoric with three interlocking covers by J. Scott Campbell for #1, and covers by Eric Powell for #2-#6.
And the best news about the miniseries? It’s not some new take a meeting between the three. Nope – the six issues will tell the story of the movie that was could have been. One more thing that makes this whole deal interesting? That original treatment for the Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash movie that the miniseries will be pulling from? Written in 2003 by a guy named Jeff Katz (formerly at New Line and now at Fox). Yep – the same Jeff Katz that’s currently co-writing Booster Gold with Geoff Johns for DC.

'1408', 'BLACK SHEEP' and 'HOSTEL :PART II' To Hit DVD In October, Specs Unveiled
DavisDVD.com reports that Genius Products and The Weinstein Company will release 1408 on DVD October 2nd. The supernatural thriller, adapted from a short story by Stephen King and starring John Cusack, will be available in an exclusive unrated cut in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1. Complete details on extras haven't been released yet, but expect deleted scenes, an alternate ending, a featurette or two and more. Retail will be $29.99.
Also, Dimension Extreme and Genius Products will release Black Sheep on October 9th. Presented unrated with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, the horror/comedy from New Zealand will also feature an audio commentary track with director Jonathan King and actor Nathan Meister, five deleted scenes with optional commentary, a making-of featurette, a blooper reel, trailer gallery and "Early Morning", a bonus scene shot exclusively for the DVD. Retail is $29.99.
Plus, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed details on their upcoming release of Hostel: Part II. Due on October 23rd, the DVD will be presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1. Bonus materials will include commentary with director Eli Roth, a second commentary with Gabriel Roth and Quentin Tarantino, and a third commentary with Eli Roth, Lauren German, Richard Burgi and Vera Jordanova. Exclusive Interview: KANE HODDER

When you mention the name Kane Hodder, it's almost - if not totally - unanimous that the first image to come to mind is Jason Voorhees. Having played the character from "Friday the 13th: Parts VII - X" (more than any other actor to play the role), Kane will forever be remembered as the man who brought that hockey mask-wearing horror icon to life! However, people tend to forget that Kane has done some other fantastic work; occupying multiple roles within the film community.
Whether he is doing stunt work on countless movies, acting in films alongside Academy Award-winning actresses, or serving as stunt coordinator, associate producer and actor for Jeff Thomas' (interview) visual horror fest "Fallen Angels" (review), Kane Hodder is a man with many talents. So as we continue with our exclusive coverage of "Fallen Angels", we bring you our exclusive interview with one of the all-time greats in the horror industry. Enjoy!
HORROR BRAIN: What was it about "Fallen Angels" that drew you to it? What made you want to be a part of this project?
KANE HODDER: I liked the script overall but, in particular, I liked the idea of visually seeing representations of the seven deadly sins. Of course, wanting to be one of those sins myself. I also love the idea of shooting the movie in such a historic location. The feeling in that prison at night was amazing.
HB: You served as stunt coordinator, associate producer and even did a bit of acting for the film. How did you manage to juggle all of those responsibilities?
KH: It was fairly easy for me to do all those jobs because none of them, in particular, were too complicated in this film. Besides, I'm used to coordinating the stunts in a movie where I'm playing a lead character anyway. As far as being associate producer, that was easy because the real producers (Leonard, Derek, Robert & Myron) did all the real producing work.
HB: "Fallen Angels" features quite the all-star cast. What was it like being around all these other big name horror actors? Do you have any interesting stories about things that happened on the set or off set?
KH: The movie has a great cast. It was really enjoyable to work with them, especially since I already knew a lot of them from before; personal appearances and conventions that we have done together. On the set, my favorite thing to do was walk through the dark parts of the prison by myself where we weren't shooting. It felt really weird sometimes. I just wanted to see if I could experience a ghost or something. Of course, someone set up some really good scares for the crew throughout the prison, too. That was hilarious too see.
HB: What was it like working with Jeff Thomas? How is he different from other filmmakers you have worked with?
KH: I really enjoy working with directors like Jeff. I always love when a director has such respect and interest for the genre, and in my opinion, it usually works well when a director is creating a movie from his own written work. Jeff wore me out with his unlimited energy, too!
HB: As mentioned above, you have your hand in many facets of the industry. Do you find yourself preferring one over another or do you just have a blast with all of it?
KH: I will always love the stunt business. It's the one single reason that I wanted to go into film in the first place. However, in recent years, I have realized that I also have a passion for acting too. I almost feel like dramatic acting is where I belong. Never thought I would say that.
HB: If there was someone or something that really drove you to become an actor/stuntmen, what or who would that be and what was their influence on you?
KH: This will be dating myself, but one influence on me choosing to do stunts for a career was watching Chevy Chase do his pratfalls at the beginning of each Saturday Night Live show in the mid seventies. In High School, I always enjoyed making my friends laugh when I would pretend to get hurt in some type of set-up stunt mishap, too.
HB: Have you always been a big fan of horror movies or has it been more of an "I just fell into it" kind of situation?
KH: I have always enjoyed horror movies and I always will.
HB: If you weren't involved in the film industry - doing stuntwork and/or acting - what profession do you feel would appeal to you and could make you happy?
KH: Before I decided to go into stunts professionally, I was studying Geography and cartography! I still think I would have been a great at making maps.
HB: You have worked with so many wonderful and talented actors and filmmakers over the years, is their one film or instance that you can recall that had a lasting impact on you and your career?
KH: One project that comes to mind immediately that had a tremendous impact on my desire to do more acting was working with Charlize Theron in "Monster". It was amazing to watch her work in that film. To see someone transform like that really made me want to see what I might be capable of doing.
HB: Are there any actors, directors, producers, etc. that you would love to work with? If so, who and why? Are there people you have worked with in the past that you absolutely loved working with?
KH: My ultimate goal would be to do a scene with De Niro or Nicholson. I would probably shit myself from nerves though.
HB: What are your thoughts on the current state of the film industry? Do you feel as though horror movies, in particular, have been hurting a bit or are we part of a resurgence that is making the genre more appreciated and loved?
KH: Some horror movies have gotten a little too high tech for my taste and that's why I'm so proud of the movie "Hatchet". It's a throwback to how much fun horror movies used to be. The entire movie elicits the reaction from the audience that the sleeping bag kill in "Friday the 13th part VII" did. You know what I'm talking about...
HB: Are there any films out currently that you absolutely love or just despise?
KH: I'm not a harsh critic for most horror movies. I always find something that I like about the movie, even if people hated it.
HB: People, of course, know you as playing the iconic Jason Voorhees. What was it about that character that made you wanna play him and what ultimately made you decide "enough was enough" and it was time to stop playing the character altogether?
KH: WHAT MADE ME DECIDE TO STOP PLAYING THE CHARACTER!!!??? I NEVER DECIDED THAT. THAT CHOICE WAS MADE AGAINST MY WILL. IT PISSES ME OFF THAT THAT RUMOR WAS PUT OUT THERE. THAT I DECIDED TO QUIT. BULLSHIT!! I never wanted to stop playing the character. People know how much I loved it. Amazing the shitty rumors that go around the Internet. Makes me feel murderous
HB: What projects do you have coming on the horizon that us fans can look forward to seeing you be a part of?
KH: "Hatchet" comes out in theaters Sept. 7th. "Born" will be out on DVD soon. "Ed Gein" came out recently and I just started a movie on June 13th that I'm real excited about where I will be playing the BTK killer. Guess I'm typecast as always being the killer and you know what?....That's just fine with me. I seem to be pretty good at it.....

Alan Ball's Vampire Drama 'TRUE BLOOD' Coming To HBO, Anna Paquin To Star
Hollywoodreporter.com reports that lan Ball is returning to HBO's primetime lineup as the pay cable network has picked up his drama pilot True Blood to series.
The number of episodes and the premiere date for the vampire drama starring Anna Paquin is yet to be determined. Production on the show's first season is slated to begin in the fall.
Based on the "Southern Vampire" book series by Charlaine Harris, "True Blood" takes place in a world in which vampires can buy Japanese-made synthetic blood. Their integration into a small Louisiana town causes quite a stir, and a love story ensues between a vampire, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie Stackhouse (Paquin), an innocent waitress who can read people's minds.

Screenwriter Marcus Dunstan Talks 'FEAST' Sequels, Possible NC-17 Rating
Fangoria.com reports that while talking to them about his scripting work with Patrick Melton on "Saw IV", screenwriter Marcus Dunstan shared a bit of news on their back-to-back sequels to Feast, the PROJECT GREENLIGHT creature feature that marked their entree into Hollywood. “Feast 2 and 3 are coming together, with [director John] Gulager back,†Dunstan tells Fango. “Neo Art & Logic is producing again, and if they let us get away with the vulgarities we’ve currently scripted, and if we don’t get deported, we just may have the NC-17-rated monsterfest that was only hinted at in the first film.â€

New Videos From the Set of J.J. Abrams' Monster Flick Revealed!
Latinoreview.com now has up a link to a J.J. Abrams website that has posted up some brand new behind-the-scenes videos for his latest project - "Cloverfield" or "1-18-08" or "Untitled"... or whatever you wanna call it.
The "Untitled" film will be hitting theaters on 1-18-08.

AOL Moviefone now has up a brand new trailer for Larry Fessenden's forthcoming thriller The Last Winter, which goes into limited release on September 19th.

Nicole Kidman To Star In Universal's Remake of Colombian Horror Picture
Variety.com reports that Universal Pictures has acquired remake rights to the Colombian horror film Al final del espectro, and will develop it as a starring and producing vehicle for Nicole Kidman.
Juan Felipe Orozco, who helmed the original, is attached to direct the remake. Fernley Phillips ("The Number 23") is writing the script.
Kidman will produce through her Blossom Films banner, teamed with Vertigo Entertainment partners Roy Lee and Doug Davison and Rick Schwartz. Latter was a co-producer of "The Departed" and worked with Kidman as exec producer of "The Others" and "Birthday Girl."
Plan is for Kidman to play a woman who, after a tragedy, is encouraged by her father to take refuge in a fancy apartment building. She becomes a shut-in, and begins to see a ghost.

Screen Gems To Remake New Spanish Horror Flick ‘REC’
Variety.com also reports that Screen Gems has made a deal to remake Rec, a Spanish-language horror film about an outbreak of rabies in Los Angeles.
Remake will be written and directed by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, who helmed the horror film "The Poughkeepsie Tapes." Production will begin early next year.
Vertigo's Doug Davison and Roy Lee will produce with Sergio Aguero. Julio and Carlos Fernandez will be exec producers. The original film, financed by Barcelona-based Filmax, was directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza. It has yet to be set for distribution.
In the film, a downtown Los Angeles apartment building is quarantined after a mysterious deadly and highly contagious strain of rabies breaks out. A reporter and her cameraman are among those trapped inside.

Nunnari & Wechsler To Adapt Thrilling Sci-Fi Graphic Novel ‘OCEAN’
Variety.com also reports that Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari and Nick Wechsler have teamed to option screen rights to Ocean, a graphic novel by Warren Ellis that is a template for a big-scale alien thriller.
Nunnari and Wechsler will produce, and Craig J. Flores is exec producing.
Story concerns the thousands of coffins containing angel-like bodies, and a giant weapon of mass destruction, discovered by a scientist on Jupiter's ice-covered moon Europa. A U.N. weapons inspector sent to investigate uncovers a chilling secret about the history of humanity.
Nunnari produced "300," based on the Frank Miller graphic novel, and he recently teamed with Wechsler to produce the Miller title "Ronin" at Warner Bros., with Sylvain White ("Stomp the Yard") directing.
Wechsler called the graphic novel "an alien thriller with a fresh take on the origin of man."

Original ‘WICKER MAN’ Helmer To Bring Us ’COWBOYS FOR CHRIST’!
Moviehole.net reports that the long-awaited “Wicker Man†re-imagining – same story, different backdrop – is finally (this thing has been a long time coming) about to get underway.
Cowboys for Christ, from writer/director Robin Hardy (the chap that brought us the original “Wicker Man†– not the mind numbing remake), has set itself a September 10 start date. It’s booked locales in Scotland and Texas to shoot.
Starring Christopher Lee and Faye Dunaway, the film tells of a Christian singing star and her chaste fiancé, a Texas cowboy, who travel to Scotland for a music festival that is merely the curtain-raiser for a horrific pagan ritual of sacrifice and murder, and it's uncertain if the power of the Americans' Christian faith will be strong enough to survive the assault of the pagans.

Soldiers To Fight Against Vampire Zombies In New Regency's 'VIRULENTS'
Variety.com reports that New Regency is taking the current wave of pics set amid the war and terrorism in the Middle East and adding a twist: vampires and zombies.
It's optioned the Virgin Comics title Virulents and set John Moore ("The Omen") to direct the adaptation. Pic will be distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Story, to be adapted by John Cox ("Sergeant Rock"), revolves around a ragtag group of soldiers who search for a lost patrol in Afghanistan. The soldiers, some from an American military unit, some from an Indian military unit, stumble into a nest of vampire zombies. It will be produced by Gotham Chopra and Sharad Devarajan of Virgin Comics, along with Seth Jaret and Moore.

Lionsgate to Release ‘SAW III: DIRECTOR’S CUT’ and ‘NOTLD 3D’ DVDs In October
DavisDVD.com reports that Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release Night of the Living Dead 3D on DVD October 9th. This all-new 3D remake of the George A. Romero horror classic arrives with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Extras include a commentary track, a making-of featurette, "Filming in 3-D - Behind the Scenes" featurette, a Q&A with the filmmakers, trailer and TV spot. Retail is $26.98.
DavisDVD.com also reports that Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release Saw III: Director's Cut on DVD October 23rd. The film arrives in a new 120-min. unrated cut featuring an anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Bonus materials on this go-around include separate audio commentaries with writer Leigh Whannell, director Darren Lynn Bousman and Tobin Bell & Shawnee Smith, "Jigsaw's Plan," "Filmmaker Favs," "Looking Tortured Make-up FX Lesson" and "Choose the Death" featurettes, and Hydrovibe Music Video Featuring Shawnee Smith. Retail is $26.98.
Also look for the Saw Trilogy six-disc set that includes all three Unrated 2-disc sets in a limited edition 3-D Puppet Head Box. Retail is $49.98.

Production Wraps On Paul Schneider's Horror-Thriller 'THE WALL'
Variety.com reports that Production has wrapped on thriller-horror pic The Wall, produced by Michael Grais, Gavin Wilding and Paul Pope.
Lindy Booth ("Dawn of the Dead") stars along with Lawrence Dane, Suzie Pollard and James Thomas.
Story concerns a woman who returns to her small town in Maine after she learns that local realtors want to develop the land that includes the lighthouse in which she grew up and where her mother was murdered; her father was convicted of the crime.
Pic, penned by Michael Bafaro and Anna Singer, is directed by Paul Schneider ("Cries in the Dark").
Grais' writing and producing credits include both "Poltergeist" films.

'HOLLOW MAN: DIRECTOR'S CUT' To Hit DVD With New Footage, Artwork Revealed
DVDactive.com reports that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has sent over early details on Hollow Man: Director's Cut which stars Kevin Bacon and Elisabeth Shue. This Paul Verhoeven directed film will include an additional 8 minutes of never-before-seen footage added back into the film. The film itself will receive a digitally re-mastered anamorphic widescreen transfer, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. We have no word on any extra material for this one yet, but we'll be sure to bring you further details shortly. You'll be able to own this one from the 16th October for around $19.94. Exclusive Interview: DAVID HESS (Part 3)

Here now is the final installment of our rather massive interview with actor David Hess. In this final segment we discuss other career paths, who he would most like to work with, professionally, and that always-popular subject of money - with little bits of other topics here and there. And now, we proudly bring you the conclusion of our exclusive interview with the multi-talented David Hess...

HORROR BRAIN: So if you weren’t involved in the entertainment industry – doing movies or music – say none of that came about, what would you like to do, in terms of an occupation?
DAVID HESS: [laughs] Good Question. Oh boy. You really nailed me with that one. I think I’d like to design landscaping projects, maybe build houses. I don’t know if I would want to do anything on a big, commercial level. I’m not a person who likes to sit behind a desk for too long but it definitely would have something to do with being out in nature. But I don’t know how it would not relate to music. I mean it would have to relate to that, somehow.
HB: So music is just one of those things, for you, that no matter what, will always be there?
DH: Yeah. That’s just me. The ability to take out a guitar once in a while and just play it, which I haven’t done too much lately, but that too shall pass.
HB: I know that we had talked about this other day when we spoke, when we talked about "Irreversible, but are there any films that are currently out today that you have come to appreciate? Any filmmakers/actors you would like to work with?
DH: Sure. I'd love to work with Anthony Hopkins, for instance. That would be a lot of fun. I think that he and I could get along really well. I think we'd have a friendly competition and see how far we could take it. I think he really speaks through his own vulnerability when he acts. I love seeing that. And ya know what? The guy that did "Irreversible", Guillermo del Toro - the guy that did "Pan's Labyrinth"...I would work with Quentin Tarantino if he would get his act together; not promoting other people and just promote himself. I think he's a big talent.
I don't know. Like I said, if you work in the Hollywood scene - and you're working on pretty big pictures - there's a compromise there that I'm just not willing to make, ya know? So I guess that's why they don't want me to work with them. Ruggero Deodato, a very good friend of mine, has a film that he is prepping right now that I'm probably going to do in the Fall. I'd love to work in England and I think I'm going to get the opportunity this Fall because there is this young English director, Andrew Jones, who is just really... he's a real visionary in terms of the kinds of films he wants to make. I'd work with him and it’s basically, for me, just constantly pushing the envelope.
I lived in Germany for a long time, I speak the language, and I know a lot of German directors and most of the ones I know are good so I can't say anyone in particular. But to do another film in Germany would be a lot of fun. I love doing that.
HB: Well that's certainly an impressive list of people, there.
DH: Well yeah and I think that the one thread they all have in common is that their uncompromising. [Alejandro] Jodorowsky is trying to get another film off the ground, "The Sons of El Topo", which I have been following because a friend of mine is involved in producing it. I'd jump on that film in a New York second! He's a groundbreaking director. He also directs stage... those are the kinds of directors I want to work with; the ones you can have a dialogue with, over and above your role in the project because that can only enhance what you bring to the project.
I've done enough work in television that... ya know, that's easy shit to do.
HB: Yeah I had read another interview that was done with you where you say, with television, it's basically you're in and then you're out. That's it.
DH: Yeah, ya know, the people that do it are proficient in what they do; their good workers, some of them have talent, some of them I don't think have talent. But why are they doing it? All of a sudden there's a series that gets popular... making a zillion dollars. They're becoming independent; they're not having to worry about money for the rest of their lives. Well, how many of those people really have an idea of what kind of career they want? Is their career based on making money or is their career based on being creative? So there's that question that comes up. You always have to choose. You always have to choose.
I think that a lot of people that do television - probably most of them - would like to make that choice. But, maybe they don't have the capacity to; maybe they aren't as talented and that's why they are doing television. Money not withstanding, I don't deny them any of that. That's great that they can make a living and become independent. Hopefully they are good citizens and if they have a family, they raise their children well and they input into society. But... talent wise?
HB: Well, coming from your extensive experience in both film and television I can understand your position. With the whole money thing, it's a situation, I feel, that has really gotten out of control - in terms of where our priorities are and who we give the big money to.
DH: Ya know, if it's a $5 million film, yes, you're going to get paid differently that if it's a $50 million film or a $500 thousand film. You do the project that best tweaks your soul, is the best way for me to put it; that appeals to that inner person. And you can't really worry about the money. I mean my first statement [laughs] - people always get afraid when I say it - but I always tell everybody: Don't embarrass me! Don't embarrass me because David walks. Don't embarrass me... so you got a lot of latitude there, ya know?
Whatever you have in your budget that sounds fair, I'm willing... I wanna work, I wanna do the project with you. Just don't embarrass me. Don't come across like a hard-noser and say we're going to pay you scale or do this when you want me to do the lead. If that's the case, then you're not the kind of people that I want to work with. You want me to carry a film and you're going to pay me scale so I have to lose money because I'm coming on location? Nope. I mean what kind of bullshit is that? That's not real. Get someone else then. So If I can bring something to your project, well hey! Let's be fair about it.
HB: Don't embarrass me. [laughs]
DH: That's exactly right. I mean I use that all the time. That's like my trademark. But it's true. You can understand the concept behind that. It's really true because what you do is you make people think twice, then.
HB: And it also shows you what kind of person this is; the person that you are going to be working with.
DH: Absolutely. Because if they persist in taking that route, then you know that they don't really care. If you have to struggle to get what shouldn't be a struggle then there is something definitely wrong. I mean there are many circumstances where - totally understandable - people don't have it in their budget to be able to pay you what you should get paid and, in those cases, as far as I’m concerned, I'll take less because I don't want it to be an issue. I don't want it to be a money issue because then you're not being creative. Then it's no longer a creative thing. But, yeah, those are some very real pitfalls that you run into and you have to be aware of that.
HB: It's certainly something that you would just not want to happen.
DH: Well I have been on films where that has happened. It's very unpleasant. That's the best way for me to put it. You just want to get away from it as soon as possible and that's not what we're about. What a blessing! Who can say... I mean how many people do you know can say, "I did what I wanted for my whole life?" What an amazing, AMAZING statement to be able to make.

Roger Avary To Write and Direct Big Screen Adaptation of 'WOLFENSTEIN'
Variety.com reports that producer Samuel Hadida has secured the rights to the vidgame Return to Castle Wolfenstein, with Roger Avary attached to write and direct the adaptation of the ID Software property.
Project reteams Avary with Hadida after he penned company’s horror pic “Silent Hill.â€
The WWII-set “Return to Castle Wolfenstein†revolves around U.S. Army Ranger B.J. Blazkowicz, who leads a team of agents into Castle Wolfenstein in order to investigate the Nazis’ SS Paranormal Division. Project had previously been set up with Mark Gordon at Sony before the rights to the game reverted back to ID Software.

Warp X Chooses Their Four Female Directors For 'DARKLIGHT' Project
Variety.com also reports that the low-budget digital film studio Warp X has selected the four femme helmers who will move into production on their projects as part of the Darklight: Women Direct Horror initiative, which was launched last year.
The 76 applicants have been whittled down to Smita Bhide, Miranda Bowen, Corinna Faith and Juliet McKoen.
McKoen directed Shirley Henderson starrer "Frozen" (2005). Bhide is about to complete her debut feature "The Blue Tower."
Bhide's project details a young Indian woman's turbulent experiences of an arranged marriage. Bowen's "The Men's Room" portrays the darker side of a city firm. "This Little Piggy" by Faith is a twisted take on consumerism set on a psychotic farm. McKoen's "2d4" focuses on extreme sports.

Exclusive Interview: DAVID HESS (Part 2)

In this second part of our three-part interview with actor David Hess, we get into talking a bit more about his career and get his thoughts on other topics. These topics include his long-time friendship with fellow actor Marty Kove, filming in Europe and how it compares to filming here in the States, and how he feels about the modern film industry just to name a few. And now, the continuation of our interview with David Hess...

HORROR BRAIN: In talking with Jeff [Thomas], he had told me that... Well in the film is also Marty Cove.
DAVID HESS: Right.
HB: And he had told me that you two had had a pretty long friendship – still do.
DH: We do! We’ve known each other for more than 30 years.
HB: I wanted to talk with you about that because I know you had also --
DH: I’m picking him up at the airport today, incidentally.
HB: Really?
DH: Well, no, actually tomorrow. He’s coming out for the Livermore Film Festival, the California Film Festival. We’re both invited guests and I’m going to pick him up and we’re going to go out for a couple of days.
HB: Well that’s a perfect timing then to ask about him. [laughs]
DH: Well, no, we see each other a lot when I’m down there; sometimes I’ll stay at his house when I’m in L.A.
HB: Well I was wondering how that friendship got started because I know you two had also worked on “Last House [on the Left]†together.
DH: He was living with my sister at the time. So we just got to be good friends. We were in the same business and we were both neophytes at the time. Since “Last House†was my first film I was more of a musician and I was pretty hot in the industry, at that point. I had written some hit songs, etc. But I was also doing off Broadway, as an actor, basically musicals but serious plays, too. And he thought that it would be a good thing if I met with these people who were doing this horror film that they he had been cast in. Be we’ve known each other for a long time. I think it’s close to 40 years now.
HB: Wow!
DH: Yeah, maybe a little less. But we’re good friends.
HB: I think that’s pretty impressive.
DH: Well I brought him on the film [“Fallen Angelsâ€].
HB: Oh you did?
DH: Yeah. I just wanted to get him on the film somehow. So I just badgered everybody.
HB: Well that’s great because it’s cool to see him in the film with you even though he, too, has a small part.
DH: Yeah, they’re gonna enhance that role, too. He’ll be back for the second.
HB: That’s great. It’s good to see films that feature a couple of actors and then see them, again, many years later acting in another project together.
DH: Well I think it should be that way. Why shouldn’t people work together over the years? That’s a strange part of the industry. They do that in Europe a lot more than they do in the States. People always work together in Europe but it’s a different perception. You don’t audition in Europe, either. If you’re right for a role you’ll get called. Yeah they still don’t audition. They see you and they see what you can do on the screen and say that’s the person that we want. They’ll talk to you; they want to talk beforehand, of course. They don’t wanna buy a pig-in-a-poke but for the most part you don’t have to go in and go through this litany of reading lines, etc. that mean absolutely fucking nothing.
HB: Well the differences between filming in Europe and here in the States - the atmosphere and everything - seem to be totally unique from one another and I can imagine that the experience is just as unique.
DH: Well, they don’t have a studio system and I would have to say that the studio system really bogs down the actual creative process because it costs so much money and there are so many people that need to qualify their existence that they are always kind of putting their fingers in the pot – stirring the pot. Unless you can call your own shots, you’re really... it’s not as clean as Europe, where they don’t have to worry about overhead and things like that. They can just go out and make a film.
HB: I’d sure as hell choose that over the studio system any day!
DH: Well I chose it. I went to Europe because of that. It wasn’t strictly because of that. I had a job over there, I ran a recording firm for a while. It’s just a more pleasant community in terms of being able to really tap into your own art form. It’s not so much dollars and cents – yeah, sure, bottom line absolutely. You’re as good as the last film you made. If you lost money on it, it’s going to be hard for you to get your next one off the ground. But that’s in any business, isn’t it?
HB: Absolutely.
DH: Not just the film industry. So, yeah, I prefer working over there - unless, of course, it’s the kind of film that Jeff [Thomas] does or other independent producers or director do here which actually has a European flavor to it... and then of course the genre makes a difference. If you’re doing an action adventure or a cult film, a horror film - whatever you want to call it - there’s a little more leeway.
HB: Personally, I have always loved the look of European films. Not just in the horror/sub-horror genre, but also with espionage/spy films, adventure flicks, dramas, etc. It just has that look about it that you couldn’t possibly duplicate over here.
DH: Well, no, because they put their money on the screen. That’s exactly what I was trying to say. You get a 100% of your budget there and you get 50% of your budget here because the other 50% is going to the studio assholes, ya know? They are trying to qualify their existence. It works but it doesn’t work. You don’t have to spend $100 million because you can spend $40 million to make the same film... if you put it on the screen! They’re running a studio so the bottom line is that they have to show their investors a profit and... I don’t know. It’s all gray. It never made any sense to me.
HB: Well you’re not alone there, that’s for sure. In fact, I was going to ask you about what your thoughts were on the current state of, not just horror films, but movies in general as opposed to decades past. Personally, I believe that there has been a bit of dumbing-down, of sorts, meaning that they really aren’t’ as engaging as they have been. They are, more or less, recycled ideas that have been done to death - or remakes - etc. It just doesn’t seem like that originality is thriving within the studio system, unlike the independent market.
DH: Ok. I totally agree with you, but I think you can go one step further. I think it’s a dumbing-down of the entertainment; a dumbing down of creativity; a dumbing down of the whole artistic input. And that happens! There’s an ebb and flow in that. You look at the middle ages - or the dark ages - and yes, stuff has come out of that but how many people were creative? [laughs] You don’t know because you weren’t alive at the time. But precious little has really come out. We’re going, I think, through a kind of a quasi-dark age of art; of entertainment. It’s all the same, whether you’re making movies or writing songs.
Look at the music industry! Talk about dumbing-down! Look at television! Dumbing-down. I mean it’s anything. I think the one bright light is that books... I mean some of the books that have been coming out, recently, are fantastic! I’m a reader so I kind of keep up on it. I’ll go to the bookstores, etc. I love to read. I’m reading all the time, basically. I always have a book open, somewhere.
HB: Speaking of music, many people may not know that you started out in the music industry before you got into acting. Has music always been the catalyst for everything else you have done?
DH: Yeah. I always tell everybody that my essence is music and my acting is really based on musical art form. I hear music when I act - or I play something in my head. There is always something, musically, that fits into whatever it is that I am doing.
HB: You had done some composing on a few films. Is that something that you would still be interesting in doing today?
DH: Oh hell ya! I love to do that. You don’t get it as much but I get the offers occasionally. Somebody will call up who wants a piece of music or something.
HB: If you were offered more compositional jobs as opposed to acting, would you decide to put the acting on hold? What I mean is if got both an acting and a composing job at the same time, which opportunity would you ultimately pursue?
DH: That’s a hard call because I have never been jammed. I mean, yeah, a few times I’ve been jammed where I’ve had to compose and act at the same time but what I usually do is I usually put it out there that I would like to do the score to this film, too. I mean if you want me to be involved as an actor I would love to score it, as well, because I’m pretty good at that. Normally, that is something that most producers like; they like to have that integrated thing where they don’t have to go out and buy somebody on hearsay.
Would I turn down an acting job if a big scoring job came in? Probably yes. Unless the acting job was something that I really wanted to do then I’d probably kill myself. [laughs] I’m just teasing you. It hasn’t happened yet. I expect it will eventually, though.
HB: I’m surprised that it hasn’t more often.
DH: Well I’m not a person who goes out pursues it, that’s why. The first thing on my list is the quality of life. Yes, I have a talent and I’m able to pursue it and I feel blessed for that. A lot of people are not able to pursue their talent or talents and support themselves for their whole lives like I’ve been able to do.
My family comes first... and the older you get, the higher you climb the tree, the more you realize that’s perhaps that’s the one major thing. I mean, procreation. We can get into a serious discussion here, but that’s a part of what this is all about; what this is ALL about, this little fantasy that we live. It’s procreation, to keep the species going; at least on this level. That’s a big driving force.

Trailer: Rob Zombie’s ‘HALLOWEEN’
Yahoo! Movies now has up an exclusive look at the brand new theatrical trailer for Rob Zombie’s forthcoming remake of the horror classic Halloween, which will be hitting theaters on August 31st.
Some people think that this film is going to rock. Others feel as though the original “Halloween†is a sacred film and should never be touched; that any remake or so called “re-envisionment†would suck. We wont know for sure until the film is actually released, but looking at this trailer, it’s safe to say that this film is going to certainly be different. Whether it’s for the good or for the bad remains to be seen. We are ALL hopeful – but very, very skeptical.

'CLOVERFIELD' Gets Furious With New Poster and NYC Pics!
Ain't It Cool News now has up yet another alternate poster design for J.J. Abrams' secretive Cloverfield project - people seem to enjoy calling the film that. They also have up a few spy pictures from the NYC set that show off some of the destruction that will be featured in the film.

Guy Walks Into A Bar Acquires Film Rights To 'PAINKILLER' Videogame
Variety.com reports that Guy Walks Into a Bar ("Starship Dave") has decided to go to purgatory, acquiring feature rights to the videogame Painkiller from DreamCatcher Interactive.
Game centers on a character stranded between heaven and hell who's forced to become a pawn in the battle between good and evil.
"Painkiller" first bowed for play on PCs as a first-person-shooter game in 2004, and was followed up by "Painkiller: Hell Wars" for the Xbox in 2006. DreamCatcher's planning to release a sequel to the original soon.
Guy Walks Into a Bar principals Jon Berg and Todd Komarnicki will produce the project, which carries the tagline "Heaven's Got a Hit Man."
