HOSTEL: PART II - Review

By: Joe Click

“Get in the fucking chair!” – Todd

Director: Eli Roth
Writer: Eli Roth
Producer: Chris Briggs, Eli Roth

Cast:
Lauren German - Beth
Bijou Phillips - Whitney
Heather Matarazzo - Lorna
Roger Bart - Stuart
Richard Burgi - Todd

Running Time: 93 min.
Release Date: June 8th, 2007
Budget: ?
Box Office Take-In of Opening Weekend: $8,203,391.00

Personally, I think Eli Roth is somewhat of a genius. I believe he understands the horror genre more than anybody in the stupidly named “Splat Pack”. In fact, “Hostel” is one of the best horror films of the new millennium, along with such films as “The Descent”, “High Tension” and “28 Week Later” just to name a few. And no, I am not a fan of “Saw” or its stupid Danny Glover side plot - which was absolutely pointless.

With this freshly on my mind everyday - seeing as how horror is a big part of my life - I waited in anticipation for the Roth’s follow-up to his original “Hostel”. What I found, other than a blood bath, was a film that really wasn’t worth waiting six additional months for. So let’s go on vacation as I review the 2007 sequel Hostel: Part II.

Synopsis: Picking up directly where the first “Hostel” left off, the sequel follows three art students who are on vacation in search of relaxed inspiration. Soon they are lured into our favorite murder–for-profit business where they learn that money can’t buy you everything… or can it?

Directing: Directed by Eli Roth - the man who gave us 2003’s “Cabin Fever” and the original “Hostel” in 2006 – Hostel: Part II is somewhat of a disappointment. It’s not that the film is terrible, it’s actually better than most studio crap that we horror fans get, but it fails to grab us like his first two efforts.

As mentioned earlier, the film starts right where the first film left off and actually continues with Paxton asleep on the train. I will say that I found the uses for his character were really irrelevant being that the organization is the main focus this time around, not the characters from the first film. With that being said, I do note the opening for its great homage to “Friday the 13th: Part 2”. I mean it’s so close to that classic 80’s sequel feel and we are actually taken through the events of the first film, which will please any horror fan. There is another part of this movie that’s close to “Friday the 13th Part 2”, but to reveal it would ruin one of the key points of the film.

One scene I enjoyed involved one of the businessmen bidding on our supposed “main” characters on his cell phone. To put it simply, it’s great. As the scene plays out, the film is split in 4 and in each frame we view men around the world bidding, as well. Not only is this smart on the part of Roth, in terms of the writing, but it was filmed great as well.

Now let’s go back to where I said “main” characters in specific quotations. The reason for these quotations is that it is actually one of the main problems of the film; which is too many accessible characters. Not only are the girls, or potential victims, the main focus, but the men who are going to kill them are as well. This decision takes this movie from a horror film to a film with horror-like ideas and tones. It’s a unique side of the story but it takes a lot of the fear out of it and this is a horror movie... right?

The ending is also badly written and ends up weighing the film down considerably. All in all, though, Hostel: Part II does earn some of its cut of the ticket price.

Acting: The acting in Hostel Part II is, sadly, only passable at best. Unlike the original that featured really good performances by Derek Richardson and Jay Hernandez, this film doesn’t showcase any standout acting pieces. It’s as if most were just handed a check - with the exception of a few – resulting in the film, itself, feeling rushed and unnatural.

There is one particular scene where the businessman who wins the bid has to convince his friend to get the mandatory tattoo. But this is only worth mentioning… and not worth discussing any further so let’s keep this trolley of death rolling along.

Gore and More: There are buckets of blood in Hostel: Part II, which will surely to have “torture porn” aficionados talking. In fact, one scene is so bloody that I was sure that the MPAA was on smack when they let it pass. It was either that or Roth sucked up to every last member of the MPAA because said scene is too crazy for most people. Other than that, the film holds - for you gore whores - a disfigured face, a devoured man, and a decapitated head (it’s SO not what you’re thinking).

The sets and locations are great as well. Shot on location, with some sound stage work, Hostel: Part II really relies a lot on its settings. It’s not a bad thing but the buildings, themselves, are as scary as anything in the film. It’s a mixed bag with this shot-in-the-dark sequel.

DVD Extras: None

Conclusion: Eli Roth’s follow up isn’t great, but it does have some redeemable qualities. Check it out if you liked the first flick but, otherwise, I would wait for the DVD and bring old Slovakia home for good. Now you’re in the know!

She witnesses the impact of her loss on her loved ones, while her killer skillfully covers his tracks and prepares to murder again.

Weisz will play the mother of the dead girl, a role that Jackson and his writing team of Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh are expanding in their adaptation.
