BUG - Review
By: Joe Click
ââ¦It either is or isnât. Like the sign outside says: vacancy or no-vacancy, it doesnât say possible vacancy.â - Jerry Goss
Director: William Friedkin
Writer: Tracy Letts (based on his own play)
Producer: Kimberly C. Anderson
Cast:
Ashley Judd - Agnes White
Michael Shannon - Peter Evans
Lynn Collins - R.C.
Brian F. OâByrne - Dr. Sweet
Harry Connick Jr. - Jerry Goss
Running Time: 102 min.
Release Date: May 25th, 2007
Budget: ?
Box Office Take-In of Opening Weekend: $5 million
This little film came to my attention when I attended a comic book convention last August and immediately I was intrigued. I waited when it had a limited release and my town didnât get it. I know what youâre thinking and yes, I was really pissed and felt that I would have to wait for the DVD. Then when that didnât happen I was confused quite a bit but I was soon given a great gift - it was given a wide release! So when May 25th came around I felt great and I quickly made my way to the theater. What I found was a film that didnât let me down in the least. So without further ado, letâs get infested as I review the film Bug.
Synopsis: Tired and confused from a life of abuse, Agnes (Judd) is done with men, that is until nice Jerry (Shannon) enters the scene. The two become friends and soon Agnes has gone from hell to heaven. Then the bugs cameâ¦
Direction: William Friedkin, the man behind the classic horror film âThe Exorcistâ, directed this little fright fest and let me tell you he did a great job. His directing is just superb and is an impressive feat seeing as all of the film - except for one scene - takes place in Agnesâs little motel room. He also has a great sense for pacing and knows where, or rather when, to pack his punch/s. Honestly, the last 20 or 30 minutes of this film are probably better than most of the films coming out this year. Friedkin just builds his audience on great filmmaking and then executes in a way that only a master can do.
Also, the writing is extremely smart and the film shows that Friedkin really was into this story. I mean the guy is as old as David Lopan, so you know he thought this was special... and it is. To put it to you bluntly, the script was crafted by a master of the pen and then handed to a master of the lens. All in all, Bug is well worth your money.
Acting: The acting in Bug is without-a-doubt the best acting you will see on screen this year. Ashley Judd hits the mark perfectly but the show is stolen by Harry Connick Jr. When this man is on screen you fucking know that his character is going to be in your face 100 % of the time; even his repression is great. Itâs really sad that heâs not in more films because this guy is a keeper. Like the whole film, his best moments are in the last 20 min. or so of the movie and itâs just wonderful stuff. You could easily compare this film to David Sladeâs âHard Candyâ because they both contain a five-member cast and both are acting extravaganzas.
One scene in particular involves Michael Shannonâs character trying to get a âbugâ from under his cap on his tooth because he believes that the government placed it there when he was in the military. The acting in said scene gives you âgoosebumpsâ - Man those books were great! The âHaunted Maskâ is my fav. and... what the fuck?! I am sorry my ADD is acting up again. Letâs get back on track. You just canât go wrong with a film like Bug.
Gore and More: There is some blood - at one point a lot - but this is not that kind of film. Not that gore is bad, but to put it like the great Tommy Lee Wallace: âMost movies do their business with gore alone.â And itâs true especially in todayâs film market.
There isnât much in terms of the sets. The only other place we are taken to other than the motel room is a bar, and that is only for a brief amount of time. The motel room, itself, is perfect and it takes no imagination to believe that this woman lives there. Thatâs all I have to say about that. Can I get a hell yea?
Conclusion: Bug is that kind of movie you wished you had gone and seen at the theater after you check it out on DVD. So if youâre free, go down to the multiplexes and see this bad boy cause having bugs never felt so good. You have been informed!

In his eternal life, he is joined by his former bride (Amber Valletta), a seductive vampire who bit him 60 years ago, as well as a deceitful ally (Rade Serbedzija) who also is undead. Shia LaBeouf To Star In Neil Gaimanâs âDEATH: THE HIGH COST OF LIVINGâ?
Filmick.co.uk reports that later this year - if all goes well - Neil Gaiman will be directing his first feature film. It's an adaptation of his Death: The High Cost of Living mini-series, and - of course - he's scripted it.
This was the film he was discussing with Guillermo del Toro at the meeting a couple of weeks back. Filmick has now had this 100% confirmed.
What more do they know? That the film will most likely shoot in late autumn, early winter, and in the UK, though the comic takes place (mainly) in the US. Theyâre also pretty sure that, as he's discussed before, Shia LaBeouf is almost certainly going to play the male lead (he certainly talks about it enough) - in the comics he was called Sexton Furnival; and that Death, or Didi as she calls herself in her mortal form, has snagged the interest of one famous young actress in particular. The Death hunt is done, if the deal works out, and soon she'll be named.

Christopher Lee's Character Gets Cut From Burton's 'SWEENEY TOOD'
Cinematical.com reports that coming to theaters this holiday season, Sweeney Todd is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical thriller about "the demon barber of Fleet Street." Aside from Burton's involvement, the most exciting aspect about this movie is the cast. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Alan Rickman are just a few of the names attached, and Dreamworks has confirmed that "All the stars will do their own singing from Stephen Sondheim's music and lyrics."
When Cinematical reported on the film a few months ago, they mentioned that Burton regular Christopher Lee was a part of the cast. He was to play a "Gentleman Ghost," a character not in the original show. Sad news -- the "Gentleman Ghost" has now been cut from the film, along with several other characters.

Removed Scenes From Quentin Tarantino's 'DEATH PROOF' Revealed!
Hollywoodreporter.com asks the question: So how does Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" look now that it has been liberated from the "Grindhouse" conceit? The opportunity to find out has come as his film, in a format designed for overseas distribution, is showing In Competition at the Festival de Cannes.
The gimmick of Death Proof, of course, was for Tarantino and his filmmaker buddy, Robert Rodriquez, to create two separate exploitation flicks that might have played together on a double bill at a grindhouse cinema in the 1970s, complete with missing scenes from beaten-up prints and Coming Attractions for other low-budget B movies.
Dimension Films suffered at the boxoffice when young audiences either didn't get the concept or simply didn't care. Also, a running time of more than three hours didn't help. The plan was always to release the two films, Tarantino's female revenge car-stunt movie "Death Proof" and Rodriquez's zombie horror film "Planet Terror," as individual movies in foreign territories. But "Grindhouse's" failure in North American certainly underscored the wisdom of that strategy.

De Niro & Pacino Team Up To Hunt A Serial Killer In 'RIGHTEOUS KILL'!!
Hollywoodreporter.com reports that Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are teaming to play New York police investigators hunting a serial killer in Jon Avnet's $60 million thriller Righteous Kill for Avi Lerner's Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films.
The independently financed feature written by Russell Gewirtz ("Inside Man," the upcoming "Labyrinth") unites the longtime friends on screen for some 90% of the film -- unlike their one shared scene in Michael Mann's "Heat" and no shared scenes in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather Part II."
"You see those two icons onscreen together for virtually the whole film," Lerner said at his Festival de Cannes offices, "(something) never seen before in the history of cinema. It's one of the hardest deals we've ever done to put these two actors together."
Lerner and Randall Emmett closed negotiations on the CAA-packaged project late Thursday morning during the festival.

First Sun Productions Now Set To Remake 'SUSPIRIA'
Variety also reports that new Italian production outfit First Sun has acquired the rights to remake Dario Argento's classic 1977 horror movie Suspiria as an English-language film.
The original is screening Friday at Cannes to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its release.
First Sun has been founded by director Luca Guadagnino ("Melissa P."), fashion designer Silvia Venturini Fendi and producers Carlo Antonelli, Marco Morabito and Massimilano Violante. The company says it will develop films with an international scope, inspired by the golden age of Italian filmmaking.
" 'Suspiria' has a unique style that we want to reinvent for today's generation," Guadagnino said. "We intend to create a concept that will encompass cinema, videogames, fashion and music and that revives the original for those who did not experience it. The Gothic resurgence is very strong around the world at the moment ... and we feel that a new version of 'Suspiria' will fit very well."
