Christopher Lee's Character Gets Cut From Burton's 'SWEENEY TOOD'
Cinematical.com reports that coming to theaters this holiday season, Sweeney Todd is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical thriller about "the demon barber of Fleet Street." Aside from Burton's involvement, the most exciting aspect about this movie is the cast. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Alan Rickman are just a few of the names attached, and Dreamworks has confirmed that "All the stars will do their own singing from Stephen Sondheim's music and lyrics."
When Cinematical reported on the film a few months ago, they mentioned that Burton regular Christopher Lee was a part of the cast. He was to play a "Gentleman Ghost," a character not in the original show. Sad news -- the "Gentleman Ghost" has now been cut from the film, along with several other characters.

Removed Scenes From Quentin Tarantino's 'DEATH PROOF' Revealed!
Hollywoodreporter.com asks the question: So how does Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" look now that it has been liberated from the "Grindhouse" conceit? The opportunity to find out has come as his film, in a format designed for overseas distribution, is showing In Competition at the Festival de Cannes.
The gimmick of Death Proof, of course, was for Tarantino and his filmmaker buddy, Robert Rodriquez, to create two separate exploitation flicks that might have played together on a double bill at a grindhouse cinema in the 1970s, complete with missing scenes from beaten-up prints and Coming Attractions for other low-budget B movies.
Dimension Films suffered at the boxoffice when young audiences either didn't get the concept or simply didn't care. Also, a running time of more than three hours didn't help. The plan was always to release the two films, Tarantino's female revenge car-stunt movie "Death Proof" and Rodriquez's zombie horror film "Planet Terror," as individual movies in foreign territories. But "Grindhouse's" failure in North American certainly underscored the wisdom of that strategy.

Gordon Goes Into Pre-Prodcution On 'DOORSTEP', Hooper In Talks For New Horror Flick
Variety.com reports that Moonstone Entertainment CEO Etchie Stroh is celebrating his 15th anniversary in Cannes by embarking on a partnership with producer Robert Katz. While the L.A.-based Stroh will continue to do international sales and service his 37-film library, he is also diving into production with Katz, whom he has known for two decades.
The duo plans to produce three to four films a year in the $30 million to $40 million range, including a slate of horror films under Katz's Amicus Entertainment banner.
"It's time to close one chapter and get down to the business of some new things," said Stroh, who will provide gap financing for the projects. "If you deal on a micro-level with the territories and keep your hand on the pulse, you can be prepared for all the changes."
Stuart Gordon is in pre-production on "The Thing on the Doorstep," based on the novel by H.P. Lovecraft.
Katz, who acquired horror producer Amicus in 2005, has recently completed production on Gordon's "Stuck," starring Stephen Rea and Mena Suvari.
Moonstone is also in discussions with Tobe Hooper to helm a high-profile horror book adaptation for the new partners.

Johnny Knoxville To Do Battle With Zombies?!
MTV.com is reporting that Johnny Knoxville may be more known for shooting bolts of electricity through his flesh than for serious roles, but Paul Soter is out to change that. The writer and director is looking to cast the âJackassâ star in his upcoming zombie thriller.
Like his recently premiered Cillian Murphy/Lucy Liu flick âWatching the Detectives,â this would be a decided change of pace for Soter. The filmmaker is best known to audiences as a member of Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind cult favorites like âSuper Troopersâ and âBeerfest.â That means moviegoers heading into theaters expecting laughs might be disappointed. â[Itâs] not a comedy at all. Itâs a horror thriller,â he revealed of the new, still untitled film he wrote and hopes to direct. âIâve always wanted to make some contribution to the zombie genre and this is a different way to do that.â
On the plot, Soter explained, âItâs about a small Colorado town and thereâs a forest fire nearby and it ignites these lost barrels of toxic who knows what. It blows this toxic ash into town and makes all the dogs go apeshit. The lead guy is in a custody battle for his son and has him for the weekend. Heâs a firefighter and drops off his son at school and goes into town to fight the fire when he realizes whatâs going on. So heâs on one side of town. His eight-year-old boy is on the other side of town. Heâs got to get through this army of rabid dogs to get his son.â Whether or not heâll get his leading man remains to be seen. â[Knoxville] has shown some interest,â says the helmer.

So I am sitting in a theater - the year is 2002 - and what comes my way is a trailer for a little film called 28 Days Later. Admittedly, I thought the trailer looked a little lack luster. But I paid my money and took a chance, especially after a slue of A+ reviews. The film ended up being one of the greatest horror films of this decade and with that you knew a sequel was always a possibility.
Fast-forward to present day and now I am sitting in a theater about to watch the follow up, 28 Weeks Later. Same scenario applied, with me thinking that the trailer stunk, but the reviews were shockingly good to say the least. What made it all the more shocking is that this is a sequel and I donât have to insult your intelligence by explaining that topic. When I left the theater I was not only happy, but I may have even had an epiphany. So letâs go back to the U.K. as I review the 2007 film 28 Weeks Later.
Synopsis: After the event of 28 Days Later, much of London is left devastated and in ruins. U.S. Army officials have set up shop to reestablish the area, and have contained the rage virus by letting the last of the infected starve to death. All seems back on track until the virus hides in a uniquely immune woman and is then released unto the not-so-lucky. Now with the virus out again, a brother and sister must fight not only to survive the rage filled humans but from being exterminated by officials as well or all will be lost in a matter or 28 seconds.
Direction: Directed by the man behind the 2001 film Intacto, 28 Weeks Later is nothing less than amazing. To tell you about everything that is great about this film would not only take all day, but I would be going through almost ever second of the movie. Thatâs the great thing about the film; there isnât a dull moment.
The film starts out with a family trying to survive the best that they can, but then a boy comes knocking on the door exclaiming that zombies are chasing him. They let him in but that only brings trouble and the house is soon ransacked by the infected. The great thing about this particular scene is that it showcases the hidden truth behind human selfishness.
Much like Romeroâs âDeadâ series, this scene shows a husband leaving his wife to die in fear that he would be next. As she is pleading for her husband to come back through an upstairs window, he takes off out of the house and the zombies follow. Not only is this scene well shot and tense, but the writing is great as well and it sets up the rest of the film perfectly. Itâs as if I am still in shock from it. The movie is so good in fact that the opening scene, by itself, is better than entire films that Hollywood has been putting out lately. I could have more enjoyment staring at a freaking still from this film than I would ever watching the Black Christmas remake.
Another thing I liked about this movie was the flow of the film. The pace is perfect in every way and is accompanied by many great film techniques and beautiful shots. A great example of this is the POV. I love the POV shot and I thought that it had gone out of style about the time that Rocky had a street fight with Tommy âThe Mulletâ - I mean Tommy âThe Machineâ - Gunn. I have always felt it had a place in horror and in 28 Weeks Later, itâs used masterfully.
The characters in the film are great, as well. Not only are they completely fleshed out and a testament to how good the movie is, theyâre also incredibly realistic and really make you care for their well-being. In fact, at one point in the movie you start asking yourself, âDid Romero have a hand in the making of this movie?â The styles are contrasting, but the same primal reactions are there. I could continue but, in the end, 28 Weeks Later is one of the greatest horror sequels ever.
Acting: The acting in 28 Weeks Later is almost as special as everything else and thatâs saying something. In my opinion, Robert Carlyle was the best actor in the entire movie. He played Don, the father of our two main characters. Every time he opened his mouth it was great and there is one scene that I recall where he has to explain to his children that he watched their mother die instead of leaving her for dead. We, as audience members, feel sympathetic for him, even though he is lying to his kids; we sense that he has a good heart and was simply scared for his life. Now I know some of you will say, âI would go back for my wife.â However, I have a big enough imagination to put myself in that situation, in such a way that I think almost everybody would have done what he did.
Another actor that shined was Jeremy Renner, who played Doyle. I felt the realism just bursting out of his performance and he is extremely likeable. Most of his greatness comes in the second half of the picture and... well, I am not going to ruin this baby so you better go check it out for yourselves.
Gore and More: Gore hounds should be satisfied with 28 Weeks Later as the film gracefully and tastefully handles its blood. Itâs super bloody at times but that just amplifies the story. Itâs great because of the superb direction and, unlike a lot of Hollywood films, the gore is not the main focus.
The locations are great and only enhance the filmâs realism. The second half of the film is mostly on the move and the set changes are great. You just canât ask for a better sequel.
Conclusion: 28 Weeks Later is a tense thriller, easily comparable to George Romeroâs Dawn of the Dead (yea, I fucking said it) in terms of sequels. Yet, looking at it as a standalone film would be fine, as well. Donât miss this opportunity to be a part of history because we horror fans wonât see a sequel like this for many, many years. You have been informed.

Could Depression End The Career of Filmmaker Lars von Trier?
CBC.ca reports that Danish director Lars von Trier has revealed he takes no pleasure in filmmaking, and isn't sure whether he can continue to create movies after a period of depression.

"They say that it can take a couple of years to recover after a depression. But let us see."

Von Trier said he's due to begin work in a few months on a horror movie, called Antichrist, but isn't sure whether he can get it started. Antichrist depicts Satan, not God, as the world's creator.
"I assume that Antichrist will be my next film. But right now I don't know."

Malcolm McDowell Signs On For 'HALLOWEEN' Trilogy
Rottentomatoes.com reports that while the notion of Rob Zombie's Halloween remake may divide fans, the idea of a remake trilogy must be at the very least interesting. Let's just hope they don't remake "Season of the Witch."
"I've signed for three," said Malcolm McDowell, who is playing Dr. Loomis. "How about that? They obviously think it's going to be a big hit."
Having never seen a "Halloween" movie before, McDowell is confident that his portrayal of Loomis will be unique. "I have to tell you that I've never seen Halloween 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. I must be one of the only people on the planet never to have seen any of the films and I'm so glad because I asked the director, Rob Zombie, whether he thought I should see them and he said, 'No, better no.'"

Producer John De Mol Resurrects Hammer Horror!
Variety.com reports that Dutch producer John De Mol is reviving famed British horror studio Hammer Film Prods., which built its name on a string of pics released in the 1950s and 1960s under the Hammer House of Horror label.
Private equity firm Cyrte Investments, led by de Mol, has acquired the rights to Hammer's library, home of roughly 300 titles featuring the likes of Count Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy as well as the popular "Quatermass" franchise.
Reinvigorated Hammer studio --which hasn't done any production to speak of since the mid-1980s -- will be run by former Liberty Global execs Simon Oakes and Marc Schipper. Oakes played a leading role in brokering the deal.
"Hammer is a great British media brand that has lain dormant but lived on in people's imaginations. It is more intelligent and character-driven than traditional American 'goreography,' and we intend to capitalize on this and make it a global brand," Oakes said in a statement.

Michael Grais, writer or âPoltergeistâ and co-writer of âPoltergeist II : The Other Sideâ, has been coaxed back to the land of scary old farts; evil bedside clowns and [very] long-distance phone calls, it seems. Word has it â confirmed by three people in the know - that he may have scored the job of penning the next âPoltergeistâ film.
The new film Poltergeist: In the Shadows is in the âearly stages of development right nowâ, sources inform Moviehole.
