Sticky: NWVault OC Review #2[ Comment ] Print News | Mail News NWVault is pleased to announce the third in a series of reviews covering the NWN2 Official Campaign & Toolset, by various community members. We will be publishing one review a day, alternating between OC reviews & Toolset reviews. For ease of use and a full list of the contributing authors go here to view our NWVault NWN2 Review Index. Tonight we have the second Official Campaign review written by NWVault Reviewer Dormammu. Here's a quick summary of the review:
Using the new NWN2 engine as a platform, Obsidian, et al., prepares an in-depth adventure for all lovers of classic Dungeons and Dragons computer play. Strongly hinting at a Baldurs Gate influence, much like a fine wine might pick up the essence of an oak barrel, the Neverwinter Nights 2 Official Campaign has a lot of interesting and fun things to offer.
Hearken, adventurer! Your life as a small town orphan is about to take a drastic turn. Mystery and magic swirl about you as you uncover more details about your unusual upbringing and your unorthodox adoptive father. No, not Gorion! You are a harborman, far from the safety of Candlekeep. As you take part in the annual fair, events are set into motion that lead you from your tiny, sheltered life and take you into ADVENTURE!
Thanks Dormammu. If you would like to add your module for review, go here. The NWVault Review Guild is accepting applications for new members. If you are interested in joining the guild, follow this link.
Game Planet gave it an overall score of "4 out of 5" and had these ups, downs and bottom line: "Ups: Spectacular spell and combat effects aplenty, a compelling storyline with numerous side quests plus character development and tinkering opportunities all hot items on the RPG fan's wish list.
Downs: There are some minor graphics issues, and if you dont have a grunty PC you will have to sacrifice a lot of eye candy for the sake of improved performance.
Bottom Line: A must-have for anyone who enjoyed the original NWN titles, and for D&D;/Forgotten Realms fans.".
Fuga de Assantra by Julien "Avatar" De Lucca(Single Player) - Após anos preso erroneamente você recebe um misterioso poder que lhe permite escapar. Chegou sua hora! Liberdade ou morte!!
Teper's Vortex,Bubbles,Stars and Stuff VFX Pack by Teper's or aadatepe(Other) - Hi everybody,I am releasing my second effects pack for vortexes, bubbles, stars and stuff. Some of the effects do not show up in mod, though they show up in VFX editor. Not sure why, I have worked on trying to figure out this problem, to no end. So if anybody can figure out this problem, then kudos to you and have earn the right to post them as your own vfx's.
Player's Rest by Brendan Silveryhands(Interior : Housing) - This is my first attempt at using the toolset, so bear with me. What you have here is an outdoor area, a ruined mine office on the outskirts of Diamond Lake. It's based off of the player home illustrated in Dungeoun magazine's excellent Age Of Worms Adventure Path. I am using it as the first area in bringing The Age Of Worms to my group's players.
Darkplane test run pwc by Darkbolt Melesk(Modules) - Here is the "first run" beta release for my new module comming out under arena. I release this now because im anxious to see all my old school buddys from nwn1 and even though the mod is not done, Atleast there is a place to hangout considering there are 2 servers so far. So i hope you enjoy what i have so far. And know that there is way more to come. Darkbolt Melesk
"Harper isn't exactly hero material...she's a bard, a damn good one, and has spent most of her life blandishing tales about other people. And when her life is thrust onto a pinwheel track of death, danger, magic, and adventure, she finds more and more people look to her for answers. And more than a few are looking to her for something more... "
I have a player on my server that has twice managed to create a character that takes down the server when he logs it in.
I have stripped all items off the character and emptied his inventory, and yet as soon as he tries to join the PW, BOOM! Nwserver will crash.
I have run the server privately and tried to log him in with no other players joined and it still crashes the server.
I am at a loss with this one.
He may need to update his PWC file...
If you could get a server error log, that may help.
Patch 1.03 for Polish version I really don't know much about the patch situation for you guys except to restate what has already been said in this thread: You will be skipping 1.03 and moving to 1.04, I belive.
Removal of PWC system? I don't see the PWC file going away alltogether, but we are looking at a whole bunch of options to get the file to you easier and to try to make it smaller.
It's a very difficult area of the game to work on, so I can't promise anything at this point. But there are a lot of options as to how to address the PWC, the download fo it and all other content and making it easier to "server shop".
More: One other thing I think is important to relay:
NWN2 is not made for dial-up users and we do not support dial-up. The box even states that a broadband connection to the internet is required to play online.
I just re-state this because every week I receive a few PMs from people telling me how difficult it is to play multiplayer on a dial-up connection.
We are taking steps to improve multiplayer, shrink down file sizes and make connecting to a server easier. But I doubt we will ever support a dial-up connection.
More: I think it's safe to say that when I say "multiplayer" I am talking about the casual multiplayer functionality and the core of the persistent world architecture. You can't have a PW without multiplayer functionality, but you can have multiplayer without the PW functionality.

Okay dokey To play a PW, you will need that world's PWC file. You can usually find the file on the Persistent World's website. Most PW Servers have listed the URL to their PWC file in their server description.
Once you have their PWC file, you place it in the PWC folder in your MyDocuments/Neverwinter Nights 2/ directory.
Answers to Your Questions Well, hopefully a single place where we will post ALL questions and answers... You can still ask your questions on these forums (in the "Your Questions" thread), then we will post the answers accordingly. The problem is, we get toolset questions in the scripting forum and the CC forum and vice versa and etc.
Now I am simply panicking... Hmm.. I don't know if there is much we can do about this. I will ask around and see if anyone has any ideas.
When I work on something I always have backup copies saved elsewhere. I start with a single backup copy and, if I am going to make a change that I am not sure how it will work out, I make a second backup - just in case. I am a little paranoid.
How much RAM do you have? I am running with 2GB and the toolset rarely crashes for me.
If there was a field on the encounter that we could enter in the max level of the player that can spawn the encounter it was be an awesome resource saver for PW's.
I don't want high level players running through my goblin areas and spawning in 6 of the strongest goblins and then running off the map. I do have an auto-despawner script that rids the area of the monster if no one is fighting them, but to be able to just not spawn them to begin with out save on lag.
In fact, if there was a pre-spawn event on the encounter that allowed you to abort the encounter that would allow the best configurablity to designers.
Being a PW player myself, I like the concept behind this idea, but I need to ask a few questions:
1. What if that 20th level character has a 4th level character in the group and their intention is to spawn the gobbos for the 4th level character to kill?
2. Would a clean-up script that fires after a player leaves an area be better?
Not sure if you experimented, but as I understand it, when a player leaves an area, the AI on NPCs and creatures in the area slows way down, thus cutting out the processor and memory requirements and keeping lag down. Have you checked this yet?
The issue with the DM Client crashing servers should be fixed, but I am hearing about some client crash issues. What are they?
I have heard a little bit about clients crashing out when they enter large exterior areas. Any more info on this?
details about upcoming fixes We have thought about that, but because we are on a short-turnaround patch schedule, and the priorities change based on the community feedback it is difficult to do.
The other thing we have found is that people equate the priority level with the order in which things get released. So, if I were to say the PWC auto-downloader is high priority, then people would expect to see that next and would not be happy when they see something else.
We go into a patch with a list of fixes we would like to implement based on the community's feedback. A small few of those fixes prove to take longer to implement than that given patch cycle allows. Fixes get kicked back from QA due to regression errors or other issues.
So, what we do instead, is release a draft of our patch notes. Usually when we are reasonably certain of exactly what has or will make it through QA fully and be released with the patch.
We are also working on a way to post a list or something to let you guys know what we know about, so you don't have to worry whether we know about your issue or not.
The best thing to do though, is to get yourself into the Community Rep IRC channel. A lot of information is given there in casual conversation. You can ask about something and I will either answer you or regale you with stories of heroic gnomes facing down ferocious dragons.
More:
And it would be really nice to have Healers that actualy heal during combat. They got that to work way back in Baldur's Gate 1 so I don't see what the problem should be here.
Pssst... Even's AI is a nice fix for this.

Cost of admission is one (1) chocolate chip cookie and a bag of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans - but not the ones that taste like worms or snot. Even though it thrills my nephew to see the faces I make eating an ear wax jelly bean, I prefer the regular ones instead.
More: So has WoW and so has NWN1.
It's not beyond the realm of possibility.
Say Hello to Your Community Representatives! Not to mention there is the Community Rep IRC channel on NWNConnections that myself and other devs visit, ask questions and answer questions.
More: I believe Shane is still the Community Mgr. I am more like the community translator.
here's a question: on a dual core processor, would it be possible to get the server to run on one core, while the "game" runs on the other??
Yes, run the stand-alone server then from the Windows Task Manager (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+Esc) from the "Processes" tab, right click on the nwserver.exe then set it's CPU affinity to 1.
However, from what I know of the NWN engine, even in single-player mode you're still running it in a client/server setup, just no one can connect, so stand-alone on one computer isn't really going to help you.

NWVault Toolset Review #1[ Comment ] Print News | Mail News | Category: NWN2 - Site Features - Reviews NWVault is pleased to announce the second in a series of reviews covering the NWN2 Official Campaign & Toolset, by various community members. We will be publishing one review a day, alternating between OC reviews & Toolset reviews. For ease of use and a full list of the contributing authors go here to view our NWVault NWN2 Review Index. Tonight we have the first Toolset review written by Hall of Fame author Adam Miller. Here's a quick summary of the review:
I've been using the toolset for a long time and it's difficult to properly
review it. Things that drive some folks nuts I probably don't notice anymore due to workarounds and simply getting used to things. On the other hand, things that once seemed miraculous are now ordinary. Making an exterior and painting terrain was incredibly cool once, but now is merely yet another task along the way to making a game.
Fortunately, the toolset seems to be quite effective at making games for
NWN2. A few tasks are still slower than I'd like, such as working with scripts, but have improved considerably since launch. Creating areas is slow, simply due to the huge flexibility available. When I can place individual pillows every which way and tint them to my heart's content, it's difficult to know where to stop. Making areas easily takes ten times longer than NWN. The good part is that the results can be stunning and I don't have the feeling of monotony I had with NWN.
Thanks Adam. If you would like to add your module for review, go here. The NWVault Review Guild is accepting applications for new members. If you are interested in joining the guild, follow this link.
NWN2 Spotlight - NWN2 Module Updater by Lyncya Team[ Comment ] Print News | Mail News | Category: NWN2 - Spotlight Today we have a Neverwinter Nights 2 Tool in the spotlight created by the Lyncya Team. Titled NWN2 Module Updater this is a client that can greatly reduce frustration for players who play online. What this client does is allow the player to download all files pertaining to a server, or if they already have them, then they can simply run the client to make sure no last minute changes/additions have been made. If they have, then this tool will replace/add only the files needed. Here's an excerpt:
This community program will allow the player to get any files from any modules that are using this connexion client. Indeed, the client lists all modules that have subscribed in this register and the player has only to chose the one he is interested in and to click on "Launch". The client will download the last version files (hak, pwc, trx, xml) and put them in the right place, according to the configuration on the web site.
We want to emphasize on the fact that, it is not at all a module list aimed at describing modules to visitors. It is mainly a technical tool intended to the builders. Presently, there is enough modules description list. The only information the player will get by looking at the module list is if his favorite module is using the client. It's up to him if he desired to download and use that client. The client load less than 500ko and is installed/uninstalled properly, without leaving trace (files, folders..) We commit ourself to update this program in order to better adapt it to all the users expectations (players and builders). Thus, we invite you to come and tell your ideas or anything that would concern this program, on the lyncya forum lyncya Forum NwN2 Module Updater
Thanks for the contribution Lyncya Team. Thanks also to QSW for her help in preparing the spotlights. If you'd like your work in the spotlight, drop me a line.

I'm very nervous, because I've never been in front of such a big audience before. In fact I spent the last few months in a top-secret laboratory as a slavery guinea pig of an insane nameless creature, who only called himself "Builder". Th
The Exile by slowdive_fan(Single Player) - Chronicles of Charnia - The Exile (FINAL) After finishing the beta testing, I'm releasing the module as FINAL. Enterprise Crew by Patsy(Creatures: Aberrations) - that is what can happen with you , after you spend a hole night mapping with the shadow-fortress tileset .... you went nuts and create something like that :D just for fun, hope you enjoy. Blueprints of some of the enterprise and TNG crew-members (just the look, no skills or talents | feel free to add them). Patsy to engeneering ... bring the community to maximum warp!
Krusty's Beautiful Wisps by Krusty Cromwell(Other) - Im a huge Fey creature fan and I like to center a lot of my creativity around developing them. This is my first offering to the community, a group of my Wisps. In the mod example, you can see that the light they emit is a tad intense. More common use of the wisps actually does not look as intense. The intensity adds some life to them, though.
This replaces the standard visual effect that allows human characters to see in the dark by default. To use, drop it in override (or in your module's hak or campaign folder) and that's it.
Once this is in use, a player will be unable to see in a pitch-black area unless they have darkvision or other light source; even adjusting display or graphical gamma settings
ALFA - Open Application Server PWC by HEEGZ(Persistent Worlds) - This is the PWC file for ALFA's Open Application Server. This server requires no haks, just that you download this PWC file and put it into your My Documents NWN2 folder named PWC. ALFA is a hardcore roleplaying community set in the Forgotten Realms. You can obtain membership by filling out an application at www.alandfaraway.org or by being approved by the DMs on this server.
