REVELATIONS: A New Expansion

As the EVE community anxiously awaits the grand unveiling of all the great improvements and additions they have to look forward to in our next expansion, we're proud to tell you that we have massive hardware upgrades this coming month and bring you a glimpse into of some of the most exciting features Revelations will introduce.

Contracts
Through this robust and versatile system, players will be able to enter into traceable, limited trust relationships to create missions and business opportunities. Four basic types of contracts will be available: Auction, Item Exchange, Courier and Loan. A fifth, Freeform, may be issued under certain conditions that will limit their usability.

Combat Organization
We're taking the EVE gang system and kicking it up a few (thousand) notches, adding tactical features and management tools that will make basic communication faster and more efficient. Grouping dynamics such as Squadrons, Wings and Fleets open a plethora of possibilities for dominating the galaxy on a grand scale.

Salvaging
As the saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure," and the addition of salvageable wreckage in EVE fully supports that theory. All ships, both NPC and PC, will leave behind wreckage upon destruction, replacing the canisters that had been dropped previously. Once the initial loot is retrieved, a salvaging module may be used to extract additional ingredients.

Revelations, previously code-named "Kali", is currently available for exploration on the Singularity test server. Watch the official EVE Online website for more information as it's available.

"Due to an overwhelming community response, the Fanfest has officially sold out. Over 650 players, media, volunteers and staff will be partying together at the top of the world at the Nordica.

Online ticket sales have been disabled and no tickets will be sold at the door. If you missed your opportunity to go this year, please plan ahead for a bigger and better Fanfest in 2007."

  Test Server : 800k SP for New Players  [ 2 Comments ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: EVE: Online News
On the test server, they are seeing 800k SP for new characters. To some this a good way to get newbies a wider set of starting skills. To others, it's a design that will promote the quick creation of throwaway griefer alts. To yet others it is considered an unfair change as they had to work for their first 800k SP and it is being handed out to new players now.

Where do you stand on it? Visit the discussion in progress here.

This Week in EVE News...  [ 2 Comments ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: Site News
Early this week there were a few interesting interviews including a VERN Interview with CCP about the economy and also an MMORPG.com interview with Magnus on Kali and the upcoming changes.

We found out that there are only 18 tickets left to the EVE Fanfest 2006. The party at the top of the world is less than a week away!

The ASCN/BoB interviews were rounded out by the inclusion of a third interview with views from members of Black Nova Corp and Reikoku.

And to top off the week, we have the priviledge of hosting two recent Vance Avalon Podcasts:
Electronics - Dominique DuLion and Vance Avalon discuss the advantages of Electronics and their use in PvP.

ECM - Find out how to use ECMs and what can be used to defend against them in this informative podcast by Vance Avalon and Dominique DuLion.
Have a Great Weekend, All!

ASCN/BoB War: Filling in the Blanks  [ 37 Comments ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: Alliance News
In my previous interviews, there was something very lacking... the presence of BoB. That needed to be changed, and with the help of Anede of Reikoku, I was able to better round out the responses.

Q: Has the war currently affected you? If so, how?
Blacklight: It's made me much more interested in logging in, I'm really enjoying Eve again.
BadManEdmundo: I've been glued to the PC with forums, killboards, fleet battles and logistics work. I barley have time, to do anything else! But I still have the same love for Eve, I took a break before most of this began so funds were low but getting right into the action head on really lit the fire again for me, I eagerly await each weekend for some late night drinking and gate camping wondering ‘Think they'll engage?’.

I am proud to present the views of...

Blacklight - CEO of Black Nova Corp
BadManEdmundo - Reikoku foot soldier

  EVE Fanfest : Only 18 Tickets Left!  [ 1 Comment ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: EVE: Online News
From news posted on the official forums:

Due to a very positive community response, we are rapidly approaching the maximum number of tickets we may sell for the Fanfest due to limitations imposed by the size of the venue. That's right, the Fanfest is in danger of being sold out. If you have booked your travel arrangements but not purchased your Fanfest ticket, it is in your best interest do to so immediately. There are no gaurantees that tickets will be available at the door and once we have sold out, that's it. We can't make any exceptions. For more information, please visit the Fanfest information page. It's almost time for the Party at the Top of the World. Don't be left standing out in the cold.

VERN - Interview with CCP on the EVE Online Economy  [ Comment ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: Outsider News
The Virtual Economy Research Network recently interviewed Hilmar and Magnus on the realistic economic experience that players get in EVE Online.

From the interview:

Then why is it that you wish to create a realistic economic experience in the first place? Wouldn't it be easier to have a more limited "trading sub-game" like many other MMOGs?
Hilmar: We are making a virtual world where the players are creating something which is real - to them. For this reason, we definitely want to make the point that the EVE economy is a real economy in the sense that it operates according to real-life economic concepts. This is a very complex marketing message to make: "EVE Online - where everything is real", when at the same time it obviously isn't.

Virtual economies, real life sales, the EIB heist, and IGE are some of the areas covered.

New Hardware For Tranqulity  [ 3 Comments ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: EVE: Online News
According to Oveur's Dev Blog, more new hardware for Tranquility is on it's way. More and faster capacity for the SQL Server and more blades for more nodes are on the slate to arrive in November. So what does this mean for Tranquility in it's current state and for the upcoming release of Kali?
"We also have a team working on hotfixes on Tranquility, which was one of the reasons we postponed the Kali public testing. We simply had a lot of good fixes we needed to test so we could deploy it to Tranquility. Most important of those is probably the fix which addresses solar systems which have a lot of Starbases."
That hardware can't get here fast enough...

  Poll Results  [ Comment ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: EVE: Online News
So who is going to build the next Titan in Eve? I found the results of last weeks poll rather interesting. As I watched the number of votes climb during the past week I noticed that there was a sudden spike in the number of votes during the weekend that pushed BoB well ahead of any other group in the list. We don't usually get a spike like that in votes so it was very interesting indeed. Here are the results from that poll...
Which Alliance Will Build The Next Titan?
Band of Brothers
 [tally] 33
Ascendant Frontier
 [tally] 14
Lotka Volterra
 [tally] 7
Veritas Immortalis
 [tally] 3
Red Alliance
 [tally] 4
Razor
 [tally] 1
Dusk & Dawn
 [tally] 7
Someone Else
 [tally] 9
Total Votes: 78
Since we have been getting quite a few community wallpapers sent in lately, I thought we'd do a little technical poll this time. We'd like to know what resolution do you play Eve At and do you prefer full screen or windowed play. Let us know and thanks for voting!

Emergency Server Reboot  [ Comment ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: EVE: Online News
Tranquility is down for an emergency server reboot. My favorite quote of the day was the following in game message from CCP...
"Players, please do not use the Market or pretty much do anything until the server is brought back up. We apologize for any inconvenience..."
CCP did ask for help in testing a possible hot fix on Singularity earlier last week. Perhaps we should all give them a hand with that...

ASCN/BoB War : Views of a Few, Part Two  [ 6 Comments ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: Site News
It's been a week or so, so I asked around again and got some more input from people ranging from completely unrelated to front line combatants. This time around, our panel was...

Killahh -- no specific affiliation given
Caledric -- Spectral Armada
Leoni Falconer -- that miner from Ashab
Saerison -- ex-ASCN member
Axeon - current/active ASCN member

Each of them took some time out to give their views of the war and its affects on the EVE community.

Read their replies HERE.

EVE Coldfront : IRC DevChat Transcript  [ 3 Comments ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: Outsider News
Coldfrotn held a Dev Chat in IRC on Thrusday and they have the transcript very nicely formatted on their site.

Chadk: Related to the question about missions. Are there any changes to belt rats comming soon? As it is now, ratting(And even missions) can be very borring, compared to the reward
Zrakor: We will be adding in more complexes into Exploration, so the people who can't access the static complexes which are over-farmed will be able to find similarly rewarding and difficult content via exploration.
Oveur: And regarding ratting specifically, we're considering moving that into the same system we create all encounters in, so you might have to explore for them and they have more challenging encounters with them
Oveur: This actually works to solve a couple of problems in the bigger scheme of things :)
Oveur: so i would consider it likely
Oveur: (as in ratting, asteroid belts)

Areas covered are POS, Instas, capital mining ships, lag, EVE China, blob breaking, and jump queues.

Tide's Horizon : Why Eve is Hard to Leave  [ Comment ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: Outsider News
Tide goes over some of the aspects of EVE that reel us in and keep us there. Covering a range of points from Kali to the economy to EVE's 'sandbox' assets, he reviews the dynamics and design that make EVE both unique and appealing.

"The thing about Eve that providers have not clued into yet is that the mixture of a sandbox, real time advancement and hardcore PvP means that every minute of effort a player has spent in there and every emotional encounter (good/bad/whatever) is another anchor to keep them in the game." -Tide

Marketplace: "Online gamers, don't skip Econ 101"  [ Comment ]
Print News | Mail News | Category: EVE: Online News
You might think being good at Internet video games is all about slaying monsters with the click of a mouse. But as David Martin Davies reports, knowing a little economics also comes in handy.

An interesting article with views from a few economists, one of which created the economy for Star Wars Galaxies. Read it or listen to it at APM's Marketplace.
