IGN Fix It! Tool

This IGN online utility generates pre-formatted text, making your FAQ conform to the standard text layouts of 79 characters per line. This utility's output makes for clean print-outs and easy reading on mobiles computers and other lesser systems. You do not have to format your FAQ to publish on IGN FAQs, but the editors will force your submission through if it has any lines not set at any width.

Basic Instructions

  1. Copy & Paste unformatted text to the box and hit SUBMIT. The text will be cut to 79 CPL.
  2. Highlight all of the text on the preview page, then Copy & Paste it to where you need it.
  3. A good idea is to Paste the cut text to a temporary file that you send out by e-mail or webform.
DO NOT USE THIS TOOL IF ...
  • The FAQ is written with HTML breaks (BR or P).
  • You do not know what we're talking about.
COMMON QUESTIONS & PROBLEMS ...
  • FAQs w/ "<" or ">" symbols not serving as HTML code: You will need to grab the source code of the results page (do it from your browser) since the "<" or ">" are used as HTML commands on IGN. The simplest way to combat this problem is to not use those two symbols in your FAQ as arrows or dividers.
  • Unformatted FAQs w/ HTML Breaks: Send your complete HTML file by e-mail attachment (in a ZIP file). Any embedded media should be included by pre-arrangement or as part of the ZIP file. The staff will "take care" of the code.
  • Preformatted FAQs w/ HTML: If you've arranged your FAQ by preformatting, then added HTML as per IGN's recommended style, and drop it off with IGN via webform or by e-mail attachment (in a ZIP file).
  • Any FAQs over 150 KB: Although you should e-mail FAQs larger than 150 KB (as text), you can still use Fix It! to help format your FAQ. However, you should only do it a little bit at a time. Copy/Paste your FAQ in small sections sequentially and paste it into a second file (so you leave your first file as a fallback file). Processing 50 KB three times is better than everything at once.
  • The Preview: This tool will give you an idea (roughly 70%) of what your FAQ will look like on IGN. The template actually used on the FAQs Site may change without notice. As always, if you have questions or problems - ASK THE EDITORS and let us do our job to help you express yourself on IGN.
